Campgrounds and RV parks near Doolittle, MO

The Mark Twain National Forest is the main draw. The forest carries more than 750 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and motorized use, and sections of the Ozark Trail pass through it. More than 350 miles of perennial streams are suitable for floating, canoeing, and kayaking, with spring-fed water clear enough that ten feet of depth can look like one. Day trips from a Doolittle base include float trips on the Gasconade and Big Piney Rivers, trout fishing at Maramec Spring Park near St. James, and exploring Meramec State Park and Onondaga Cave State Park to the northeast. Route 66 history is heavy in the area, with the Devil's Elbow bridge and small museums in Rolla and Lebanon all within easy reach for a half-day outing.

The Doolittle area follows a humid subtropical pattern with four distinct seasons. Many Mark Twain National Forest campgrounds operate seasonally from mid-April through mid-October, with exact opening and closing dates varying by site. Some developed forest campgrounds keep vault toilets accessible year-round, but showers, potable water, and full services typically run only during the warm-season window. Many private RV parks around Doolittle, including Doolittle Acres RV Park & Campground, stay open year-round, which makes the area workable for shoulder-season and winter travel when public sites are closed. Spring brings the heaviest rainfall, with May the wettest month, and the highest river levels, which is good for floating but can lead to temporary closures of low-water crossings and riverside sites. Summer is hot and humid, with peak demand on holiday weekends. Fall delivers cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and strong color in the Ozark hardwoods, typically peaking from mid-October into early November. Winter is cold but generally mild compared with the upper Midwest, with occasional snow and ice events.

Roads in and out of forest campgrounds can be narrow, winding, and hilly, which is a real consideration for larger Class A motorhomes and long fifth wheels. The private parks closer to Doolittle and the I-44 corridor are easier to access and better suited to first-time RV renters. Cell service is reliable along the interstate and in town but drops off quickly inside the national forest, so download maps and reservation confirmations before leaving pavement. Wildlife in the area includes white-tailed deer, wild turkey, raccoons, and venomous snakes such as copperheads, so basic food storage and trail awareness matter. Summer brings mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggers; insect repellent and tick checks are standard practice. Most sites are wooded and shaded, which helps in summer heat but can limit solar charging.
