Campgrounds and RV parks near Flordell Hills, MO

The Gateway Arch National Park anchors most itineraries, with tram rides to the top, riverboat cruises, and the underground museum a short drive from any of the Metro East RV parks. Families often pair the Arch with the Saint Louis Zoo, the Science Center, and the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park, all free to enter. Across the river, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site preserves the largest pre-Columbian earthworks north of Mexico. Horseshoe Lake State Park serves as a headquarters for the roughly 85-mile Madison County bike trail network, with fishing and paddling on the oxbow lake when the park is open. Sports fans can catch Cardinals baseball at Busch Stadium or Blues hockey at the Enterprise Center, and the Anheuser-Busch brewery tour remains a standard stop on the south side of the city.

The St. Louis area enjoys a true four-season climate, which shapes when regional campgrounds operate. Private parks such as DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park, Cahokia RV Parque, Safari RV Park, and the Granite City KOA Journey generally operate year-round, while state park camping runs on shorter seasons. Horseshoe Lake State Park's campground is normally open from May 1 to September 30, with a maximum stay of 7 days in any 30-day period and no reservations accepted for individual sites. The campground, the road leading to the campground, picnic shelter three, and the hiking trail are currently closed due to an installation project on the causeway, so travelers should confirm status with Illinois DNR before planning a stay. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, avoiding the peak humidity and thunderstorm activity of July and August. Thunderstorms normally occur on between 40 and 50 days per year in the area, and severe storms with large hail and damaging winds are possible. Winter stays are possible at the private parks, but expect hard freezes and occasional snow.

Most nearby RV parks are urban or suburban rather than wooded. DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park offers full-hookup sites on a primarily paved surface with electricity, water, and sewer, gated entry with a passcode, restrooms with showers, a dog walking area along the perimeter, and a small play area. Trains run nearby day and night and can be noisy. The Granite City KOA Journey, Cahokia RV Parque, and Safari RV Park cater to interstate travelers with easy on and off access, level sites, and standard hookups, but limited shade. Horseshoe Lake State Park is primitive with no showers or hookups, drinking water, vault toilets, and a dump station. Bring water storage and mosquito protection during summer months, and check current park status before setting out.
