Campgrounds near Licking, Missouri
Licking sits in south-central Missouri's Ozark plateau, in Texas County, and serves as a practical staging point for trips into the upper Current River corridor and the Mark Twain National Forest. The town lies along U.S. Highway 63 between Rolla and West Plains, giving RV travelers an easy approach from I-44 to the north. Licking itself has fuel, groceries, and laundry, which matters on longer stays.
The closest anchor campground is Montauk State Park, located in Dent County about 22 miles southeast of Licking and 22 miles southwest of Salem, at the headwaters of the famed Current River. Additional options in the area include The Resort at Boiling Springs, Three Springs RV Park and Campground, Big Rock Candy Mountain Retreat, and Jadwin Canoe Rental, which combines a campground with river outfitting.
Together these campgrounds cover state park camping, private RV parks with hookups, and river-outfitter sites, giving travelers a second base if Montauk is booked full during peak trout season.
Things to do near Licking
Trout fishing drives most visits. Montauk State Park's premier attraction is trout fishing, and the Current River within the park contains both rainbow and brown trout. Catch-and-keep season opens March 1 and lasts until October 31, with a winter catch-and-release season on Fridays through Mondays from the second Friday in November through the second Monday in February. A Missouri fishing permit and daily trout tag are required in season, and the on-site hatchery run by the Missouri Department of Conservation is open to visitors.
Float trips are the other main draw. The Current River is a National Scenic Riverway fed by large springs, and Jadwin Canoe Rental offers canoes, kayaks, rafts, and tubes with shuttle service. Hiking trails lead away from the water, and a historic gristmill built in 1896 is open seasonally for tours at Montauk.

The area works as a three-season RV destination with a functional shoulder season. Catch-and-keep trout fishing runs March through October, and outside that window fishing shifts to a winter catch-and-release program on Fridays through Mondays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., from the second Friday in November through the second Monday in February. Spring is scenic, with wildflowers along the river, but April through June is generally the wettest stretch and Missouri sees its peak tornado activity in spring.
Summer is the busy season. Campsites at Montauk fill quickly on summer and holiday weekends, and popular Current River float sections above Pulltite draw crowds between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Fall brings cooler nights, lighter crowds, and the close of the regular trout season on October 31.
Water levels affect float plans. Upper reaches of the Current River can run low during dry summer stretches, though most sections remain floatable with occasional dragging.
How to book
Montauk State Park uses the Missouri State Parks reservation system. Campers can reserve a Missouri State Parks campsite up to 12 months in advance, either online through the Missouri State Parks reservation website or by calling toll free 877-ICampMO (877-422-6766). Reservations can be made up until 7 p.m. the day before arrival, and sites fill quickly around the March 1 trout opener and on summer and holiday weekends, so booking well ahead is recommended.
Reservable sites may be available on a walk-up basis if not already reserved; before occupying a site, check with park staff or follow the posted signs. Private campgrounds including The Resort at Boiling Springs, Three Springs RV Park and Campground, Big Rock Candy Mountain Retreat, and Jadwin Canoe Rental book directly through the operator by phone or website.
What to expect on site
Sites are wooded and river-adjacent, with basic infrastructure rather than resort amenities. The large campground at Montauk has modern restrooms, hot showers, and dump stations, and offers both basic and electric sites across multiple loops along the river, plus cabins and family sites. Full-hookup sites with sewer are limited at the state park; travelers needing sewer at the site should verify availability with the private campgrounds in the area.
Park rules are worth reading before arrival. Camping is limited to 15 days within any 30-consecutive-day period at one park or historic site, no more than two dogs per campsite is recommended, and pets must be supervised and kept on leashes no longer than 10 feet at all times. Swimming is not allowed in the trout waters at Montauk, and wading is permitted only for the purpose of fishing.
