Camping near Oakville, Missouri
Oakville sits in south St. Louis County, on the west bank of the Mississippi River about 15 miles south of the Gateway Arch. The community works well as an RV base for travelers who want quick access to downtown St. Louis attractions without paying for a city-center site. Most nearby RV parks line the I-255 corridor and the Illinois side of the river, putting Cahokia, Belleville, and East St. Louis within a short drive.
Close-in options include Covered Bridge RV Park and Storage and Safari RV Park on the Missouri side, plus Cahokia RV Parque, Belleville Mobile Home and RV Estates, and DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park across the river in Illinois. The Casino Queen property places rigs near a MetroLink light-rail station, which connects to Busch Stadium, the Arch grounds, and Forest Park, useful for families who would rather not drive into the city. Cliff Cave Park, a 525-acre St. Louis County park with trails and Mississippi River bluff views, sits inside Oakville itself.
Things to do around Oakville
Cliff Cave Park, about 15 miles south of the Arch in Oakville, sits over the second-longest cave system in St. Louis County, with walking, equestrian, and mountain biking trails along the Mississippi bluffs. The cave itself was gated in 2009 to protect the endangered population of Indiana bats that live in the cave, but the bluff overlooks and Mississippi Greenway trail remain open. Nearby attractions include the Missouri Civil War Museum, Jefferson Barracks Historic Park, Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Suson Park, and Bee Tree Park, all within a short drive. Families with an RV can use Oakville as a launch point for the Gateway Arch, the St. Louis Zoo in Forest Park, the City Museum, Grant's Farm, and Busch Stadium. Across the river in Illinois, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site preserves the largest pre-Columbian earthwork city north of Mexico.

St. Louis enjoys a true four-season climate, and that shapes RV planning. Late April through early June and mid-September through October are the most comfortable windows, with mild days and lower humidity. Records indicate that temperatures of 90 degrees or higher occur on about 35 to 40 days per year, so plan for afternoon thunderstorms and run air conditioning hard if camping in July or August.
The spring months of March through May are normally the wettest, and they also coincide with peak severe-weather season. Tornado occurrence in Missouri peaks from April through June, with a smaller secondary peak in late fall. RV travelers should monitor NWS St. Louis alerts and identify storm shelters at their campground on arrival. Snowfall has averaged a little over 18 inches per winter season, and snowfall of an inch or less is received on 5 to 10 days in most years, so winter camping is possible but limited to parks that keep water and hookups running through freezes. Fall delivers reliable color along the river bluffs from mid-October into early November.

How to book campgrounds near Oakville
Private RV parks in the Oakville and Metro East area, including Covered Bridge RV Park and Storage, Safari RV Park, Cahokia RV Parque, Belleville Mobile Home and RV Estates, and DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park, take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Book six to eight weeks ahead for summer weekends and Cardinals home stands, when downtown demand spikes.
For state-park camping on day trips out from Oakville, use the Missouri State Parks reservation portal. Missouri State Parks campsites can be reserved up to 12 months in advance, expanded from the previous six-month window, with the reservation window opening at 7 a.m. Central Time every morning for bookings 12 months in advance. A minimum stay of two nights is required for weekend reservations at Big Lake, Lake of the Ozarks, St. Joe, Mark Twain, Wakonda, Wallace and Watkins Mill state parks, and the two-night minimum must be Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday. Illinois state parks use a separate Reserve America system.
What to expect at Oakville-area RV parks
Expect suburban and roadside-style RV parks rather than wooded state-park sites. Most properties in this corridor offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, paved or gravel pads, and pull-through options sized for larger rigs. Cell coverage is strong throughout south St. Louis County and the Metro East, and grocery, fuel, and dump stations are easy to reach.
The trade-off for the location is highway and rail noise at some sites near I-255, I-55, and the Casino Queen complex; request an interior site if quiet matters. Bug pressure climbs from May through September, especially mosquitoes near the river bottoms, so bring repellent and screens. Cliff Cave Park trails are popular and shared with bikes and horses, so plan early-morning visits if traveling with kids or pets.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Oakville, MO
How much does an RV rental in Oakville cost and when can I find the best deals?
An RV rental in Oakville is one of the most affordable ways to explore the St. Louis region. Travel trailers typically rent for around $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $295, and luxury Class A rigs sit between $250 and $450. Weekday pickups (Sunday through Thursday) and shoulder-season bookings in April or October are where you'll find a cheap RV rental Oakville travelers love. For the best value, book 6 to 8 weeks ahead of Cardinals home stands or summer weekends along the Meramec River. Pro tip: filter by travel trailers if you already have a tow-capable SUV or truck, or skip towing entirely and pick a host who offers RV delivery Oakville-wide.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oakville%2C%20MissouriDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Oakville, MO?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular Missouri Class F driver's license (or your equivalent home-state or home-province license) is all you need to rent an RV in Oakville. Recreational vehicles used for personal, non-commercial purposes are exempt from Commercial Driver's License (CDL) requirements in Missouri, even for big Class A motorhomes or fifth wheels. To book on RVezy you'll generally need to be 25 or older, and the platform confirms your ID during checkout. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside help come with my Oakville RV rental?
You're covered from the moment you hit the road. Every RV rental in Oakville, MO booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on I-255 or a dead battery at Cliff Cave Park is just a phone call away. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the vehicle, and you choose your coverage level during checkout based on how much peace of mind you want. This is a financial cushion designed for peer-to-peer rentals, especially handy if you're a first-time renter heading out on a motorhome rental Oakville road trip toward the Ozarks.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Oakville RV trip?
Plans change, and RVezy makes that easy. Every booking is backed by the RVezy cancellation policy (set by RVezy, not by individual hosts), which includes a grace period for full refunds shortly after you book and additional protections if your trip is disrupted by something out of your control like a tornado warning along the Mississippi corridor. The full breakdown lives in the RVezy Help Center so you always know where you stand. If a host ever needs to cancel, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credit so your Oakville RV trip stays on track. Pro tip: book early to lock in the rig you want.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Oakville?
Absolutely, and the Oakville area is genuinely dog-friendly. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to find a pet-friendly RV rental Oakville hosts have approved for furry passengers. Once you're rolling, take your pup to Lord Stuart Drive Park's off-leash area in nearby Mehlville, the paved Mississippi Greenway trail along Cliff Cave Park, or the wide-open fields at Jefferson Barracks Park where leashed dogs are welcome year-round. Missouri State Parks also allow leashed pets at campgrounds like Robertsville and Babler. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees (usually $25 to $75 per trip) and to ask about a vacuum or lint roller stashed in the rig.
mostateparks.com/page/54900/pets-state-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Oakville?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start your trip. Many hosts offering RV delivery Oakville-wide will tow the rig to your driveway, your campground site at Jefferson Barracks or Babler State Park, or even a tailgate spot for a Cardinals game at Busch Stadium about 18 miles north. They'll level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through everything before handing over the keys. Delivery is especially popular for first-time renters and families who'd rather skip towing through Telegraph Road traffic. Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy, then message the host with your destination address to get an exact delivery fee (typically $2 to $4 per mile round-trip).
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oakville%2C%20MissouriHow far can I drive, and is there an RV rental with unlimited mileage in Oakville?
You have plenty of room to roam. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and yes, some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage if you're planning a longer Oakville RV trip. From Oakville you can reach Meramec State Park in about an hour (60 miles), Mark Twain National Forest in 2 hours (120 miles), Lake of the Ozarks in about 3 hours (175 miles), Hannibal in 2.5 hours (135 miles), and the Ozark National Scenic Riverways in 3 to 3.5 hours (180 miles). If your itinerary stretches further, message the host before booking to either add a mileage package or upgrade to an unlimited-mileage listing.
fs.usda.gov/mtnfWhere are the best campgrounds near Oakville for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Oakville include Dr. Edmund A. Babler Memorial State Park (about 40 minutes west, with electric sites in the wooded hills of west St. Louis County), Robertsville State Park (about 45 minutes southwest along the Meramec River, with basic and electric sites), Pin Oak Creek RV Park in Villa Ridge (just off I-44 with full hookups), and St. Francois State Park (about an hour south near Bonne Terre). For full RV camping Oakville hookups closer to town, Sundermeier RV Park in St. Charles is a 30-minute drive north. Reserve through the Missouri State Parks online system at least 6 to 8 weeks ahead for summer weekends.
mostateparks.com/activity/campingWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Oakville?
Spring and fall are the sweet spots. Mid-April through early June brings highs in the 65 to 80 degree range with blooming dogwoods along the Meramec, and September through early November delivers crisp 55 to 75 degree days plus brilliant Ozark foliage, especially mid-October. Summer (June to August) is humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s and occasional severe thunderstorms, so air-conditioned rigs are a must. Winter rentals are available through some Oakville hosts and work well for budget-conscious travelers if you book a rig with a furnace and heated tanks. Local insider tip: avoid the first weekend of October if you don't want to overlap with Cardinals playoff traffic around Busch Stadium.
weather.gov/lsx/climateI've never driven an RV before. How will I know what to do?
First time renting an RV? You're in good company, and you won't be left guessing. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water and sewer hookups, propane, leveling, and dash controls. You can message your host before booking with any questions, and many Oakville hosts make a short walkthrough video for reference once you're parked. Around town, stick to wider routes like Telegraph Road, I-255, and Highway 21 rather than narrow streets in Soulard or downtown. Pro tip: ask your host if they offer delivery for your first trip; many do, and that single choice removes 90% of first-timer stress.
modot.org/missouri-drivers-guideWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never stranded. Every rent an RV in Oakville booking through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, covering tire changes, jump-starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. If something goes wrong, you call the roadside hotline, then loop in your host (who knows the rig best) and RVezy support. The Missouri Department of Transportation also runs the free Motorist Assist program on major St. Louis-area highways including I-55, I-255, and I-270, so help is often minutes away. Pro tip: snap photos of the dash and any warning lights so the support team can diagnose faster.
modot.org/motorist-assistCan I take my Oakville RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, U.S. interstate travel is standard. Oakville sits at the crossroads of I-55, I-255, and I-270, so an RV road trip from Oakville easily reaches Illinois (5 minutes across the Jefferson Barracks Bridge), Arkansas (4 hours south to the Buffalo National River), Tennessee (5 hours to Memphis), or Kentucky (4 hours to Mammoth Cave). Cross-border trips into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance, so message them directly before booking if that's your plan. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage stops at the border. Popular cross-state routes from here include the Great River Road north to Hannibal and the Route 66 corridor west to Springfield.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how do I budget for gas?
Realistic expectations make for a happy wallet. Class B campervans get 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, Class A rigs typically deliver 6 to 10 mpg, and towed travel trailers reduce your truck's mileage by 25 to 40%. Regular unleaded in the Oakville/St. Louis area generally runs slightly below the national average, with several QuikTrip and Sam's Club fuel stops along Telegraph Road and Lemay Ferry Road that handle big rigs. For a 500-mile loop in a Class C, budget around $175 to $250 in fuel. Pro tip: download the GasBuddy app and fill up in Missouri before crossing into Illinois, where fuel taxes are higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead do I need to book a campground near Oakville?
The earlier the better, but you have options. Missouri State Parks accept reservations up to 12 months in advance through their online system, and popular spots like Babler, Robertsville, and Meramec State Parks fill up 2 to 4 months ahead for summer weekends and holiday periods. Private RV parks like Pin Oak Creek and Sundermeier usually have more last-minute availability and accept phone bookings. For weekday stays in spring or fall, you can often book 1 to 2 weeks ahead and still snag a hookup site. Pro tip: weekends at state parks require a 2-night minimum from May through September, so plan a Friday-Sunday trip rather than a single Saturday night.
icampmo1.usedirect.com/MSPWeb/What are local driving conditions like around Oakville?
You'll find Oakville surprisingly easy to navigate by RV. Most travel happens on wide arteries: I-255 connects you to the Jefferson Barracks Bridge and Illinois, Telegraph Road (Route 231) runs north-south through town, and Highway 55 zips you toward downtown St. Louis or south to Cape Girardeau. Avoid narrow historic streets in Soulard, Lafayette Square, and downtown St. Louis where low-clearance railroad bridges (some under 12 feet) are common. Severe thunderstorms can roll through spring and summer afternoons, so check the National Weather Service St. Louis forecast each morning. Local insider tip: the I-270/I-255 interchange backs up around 4:30 to 6 p.m. weekdays, so leave town mid-morning for a smoother start.
weather.gov/lsx/What amenities do campgrounds near Oakville offer for RVs?
You'll have what you need to stay comfortable. Missouri State Parks campgrounds near Oakville (Babler, Robertsville, Meramec, St. Francois) typically offer electric hookups (30 and 50 amp), hot showers, flush toilets, laundry, and dump stations, with water and showers running April 1 through October 31. Private parks like Pin Oak Creek and Sundermeier add full water/sewer/electric hookups, Wi-Fi, and propane fill stations year-round. Need a free dump or fresh water on the way home? The Cabela's in Hazelwood and several Flying J/Pilot stops along I-55 and I-70 offer dump stations. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot water hose and a 30-to-50 amp adapter; older Missouri state park sites occasionally have offset pedestals.
mostateparks.com/activity/campingWhat's inside a typical Oakville RV rental?
More than you'd expect, and everything you need. A standard campervan rental Oakville guests book includes a queen or convertible bed, mini-fridge, 2-burner stove, sink, and often a wet bath. Class C and Class A motorhome rentals add a full kitchen with microwave and oven, separate bathroom with shower, dinette, sleeping for 4 to 8, roof-mounted air conditioning, furnace, generator, and TV with DVD or streaming setup. Most rigs from local hosts include outdoor chairs, leveling blocks, sewer hose, fresh-water hose, and basic kitchenware. Seatbelts are provided for the rated occupancy. Pro tip: ask your host about Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot if you're planning to work from Mark Twain National Forest, since cell signal drops once you leave the I-44 corridor.
fcc.gov/consumers/guides/cellular-service-areasWhat add-ons can I book, and how does pickup and drop-off work?
Customizing your rental is easy. Most Oakville hosts offer popular add-ons like a generator package ($25 to $50/day), linen and kitchen kits ($50 to $100/trip), camping chairs and tables ($15 to $30), bike racks, kayak racks, and pet cleaning packages. Pickup is usually scheduled between 1 and 4 p.m. and drop-off between 9 and 11 a.m., though many hosts will flex an hour or two if their schedule allows. Mileage policies vary (typically 100 to 150 free miles per night, with overage at $0.30 to $0.50/mile), and unlimited mileage listings exist if you message hosts ahead. Pro tip: book the linen kit your first time out; not having to pack sheets and towels turns the whole pickup process into a 20-minute walkthrough.
usa.gov/travelHow does payment and the security deposit work for an Oakville RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure. You'll pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card; never pay a host directly or in cash. The security deposit is held separately from your booking payment, typically a few days before pickup, and released after drop-off assuming no damage or extra cleaning is needed. To avoid issues: take dated photos and a short walkaround video at pickup AND drop-off, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks unless the listing includes a dump fee. Pro tip: keep all messages with your host inside the RVezy app so you have a clean record if anything needs sorting later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs Oakville a good launch point for a family RV trip?
It's one of the best in Missouri. A family RV trip Oakville families love often starts with a night at Jefferson Barracks Park (5 minutes away with bike trails and Civil War history), then loops west to Meramec State Park for caves, river floats, and easy hikes. Inside St. Louis, Grant's Farm and the Saint Louis Zoo (both free) are 20 minutes north, and the Gateway Arch sits 18 miles up I-55. Older kids will love a day at Six Flags St. Louis in Eureka (35 minutes west). Local insider tip: pick a host who offers delivery to your campground; arriving to a leveled, hooked-up RV with kids in the back seat is the smartest $100 you'll spend all trip.
