Campgrounds and RV parks near Deer Lodge, MT

History drives most visits. The Old Montana Prison Complex offers a look at the state's penal history, the Montana Auto Museum displays classic and vintage automobiles, and the Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site showcases the region's ranching heritage. Grant-Kohrs is operated by the National Park Service and is free to enter, which makes it an easy afternoon with kids. Outdoor options fan out from the valley. The Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest surrounds the area, with fishing, hunting, hiking, mountain biking, skiing, and snowmobiling all within reach. Lost Creek State Park features a 50-foot waterfall a short walk from the campground, with limestone cliffs and granite formations rising more than 1,000 feet above the canyon floor. The Clark Fork River draws fly anglers throughout the summer.

The camping season in the Deer Lodge Valley is short. Winter closures are common, with the area receiving roughly 45 to 60 inches of snow per year, and most private campgrounds operate only from spring through mid-fall. Indian Creek RV Park and Campground is typically open April 15 to October 15, which is a good marker for the wider area. Summer is the core season. Peak camping months run from June through August, with July highs averaging in the upper 70s Fahrenheit and August close behind. At roughly 4,500 feet elevation, the valley sees warm summer days with temperatures dropping significantly at night, even during peak season, so pack layers even in July. Shoulder seasons work for flexible travelers. Late spring can still bring wet snow at higher elevations, and fall trips through September and early October offer cooler days, thinner crowds, and turning cottonwoods along the river. Lost Creek State Park is open for camping from mid-May through November 30, though the campground can become inaccessible once snow arrives, and forest-service roads in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge can be gated well into spring.

Most in-town parks are compact and functional rather than resort-style. The layout is often condensed with neighboring sites close together, some road noise from I-90 is normal, and these parks work well as an overnight stop to break up a long drive. Indian Creek RV Park and Campground provides full hookup sites with 20/30/50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections, plus pull-through sites suitable for larger motorhomes. At Lost Creek State Park, expect a more rustic setting. Sites sit tucked between towering limestone and granite walls, with picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and drinking water, but no hookups. The access road includes a gravel section and narrow turns, so smaller rigs are strongly recommended. Cell coverage is reliable in town and effectively absent in the Lost Creek canyon.
