Campgrounds and RV parks near Fullerton, NE

The Loup and Cedar rivers drive most outdoor recreation here. Anglers target channel catfish, largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappie in area ponds and river stretches, including the seven-acre lake at North Loup State Recreation Area. Paddling, wading, and shoreline fishing are common on quieter sections of the Loup. Headworks Park and ATV Trails - Loup Power adds canal-side trails, plus swimming, picnic shelters, and a playground with potable water. The park is alcohol-free and family-oriented. Off the water, families use the Loup River Scenic Byway for day drives, visit local golf courses in Fullerton, and detour to the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer in Grand Island for a rainy-day stop about an hour south.

The practical camping window in central Nebraska runs from late April through October. Loup Power District parks, including Headworks, operate seasonally from May 1 to November 1 depending on weather, and restrooms are only available during the summer months. North Loup State Recreation Area is open year-round for day use, but primitive sites are most usable once nights warm in May. Summer is the busiest stretch. Holiday weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill fast at hookup parks along Highway 81, and thunderstorms with severe weather potential are common June through August. Late spring can bring high water on the Loup after snowmelt and prairie rains. September and early October are often the best trade-off: mild days, cool nights, lower bug pressure, and open sites midweek. Waterfowl and sandhill crane movement along the Platte adds fall birding interest. By late November, freezing nights and wind push most tent and non-winterized RV camping off the calendar.

Expect small, quiet parks rather than large destination resorts. Sites are generally level gravel or grass, with 30 and 50 amp service common at private parks and 20 to 30 amp more typical at public areas. Loup Power District parks have no dump stations or direct water hookups, so plan tank service elsewhere. Cell coverage on major carriers is usable in and around Fullerton but can thin out along the river bottoms. The landscape is mixed farmland, cottonwood river corridor, and open prairie. Wind is a constant factor, so use awning tie-downs and expect gusty afternoons. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late May through August near water. Stock groceries, propane, and fuel in Fullerton, Genoa, or Columbus before heading to primitive areas. Nearest full-service repair, medical care, and larger stores are in Columbus and Grand Island, both within an hour's drive.
