Campgrounds near Lyons, Nebraska
Lyons sits in Burt County in northeast Nebraska, roughly an hour north of Omaha and about the same distance south of Sioux City. The town is small, so RV travelers base out of campgrounds in the surrounding farmland corridor and along the Missouri and Elkhorn rivers. Options range from state recreation areas with electric pads to private full-hookup parks aimed at big rigs.
The closest full-service option is Blue Ox Factory and RV Park in Pender, adjacent to the Blue Ox towing-equipment factory and set up for extended and larger rigs. West of Lyons, Dead Timber State Recreation Area near Scribner offers a quieter, wooded stay along the Elkhorn River with electric camp pads and primitive sites.
Across the Missouri River in Iowa, three campgrounds cluster around Blue Lake at Onawa: Lewis And Clark State Park, Onawa / Blue Lake KOA Holiday, and Sunset at Blue Oasis RV Park - Onawa. That cluster is the largest concentration of RV sites within easy reach of Lyons.
Things to do near Lyons
Water recreation drives most trips. Blue Lake at Lewis And Clark State Park has a boat ramp, a swim beach, and fishing for panfish, bass, channel catfish, and northern pike. Dead Timber's 50-acre oxbow lake holds bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, and channel and flathead catfish, and is limited to non-powered or electric boats.
On land, Lewis And Clark State Park has a visitor center with a full-size keelboat replica tied to the 1804 expedition, a lakeshore path, and a large playground with equipment for different ages. Dead Timber adds hiking, picnicking, and a 1939 stone shelter built by the National Youth Association along the bluffs.
The Blue Ox factory in Pender offers tours that can be arranged during a stay at the adjacent RV park.

The core RV season in this part of Nebraska and western Iowa runs from mid-April through mid-October. Lewis And Clark State Park's campground is closed from November through March and treats May through mid-October as peak, with short off-peak shoulders in April and the second half of October. Reservations are required, and every site is reservable during the operating window.
Dead Timber State Recreation Area is open year-round for recreation, though services are limited: the park has primitive restrooms, no shower house, and no RV dump station. Access via Highway 275 was damaged and limited for months after the 2019 Elkhorn River flood, and flooding on the Elkhorn and Missouri corridors is a recurring risk in spring.
Summer brings warm, humid weather and afternoon thunderstorms, and this is also tornado season across eastern Nebraska. Fall is drier and cooler, with lower campground occupancy and easier last-minute booking.
How to book
Iowa state park sites, including Lewis And Clark State Park, are booked through the Iowa DNR online reservation system on ReserveAmerica. All campsites at Lewis And Clark are reservable and a reservation is required during the April through October operating season; the campground is closed November through March, and sites can be booked up to three months in advance.
Nebraska state areas such as Dead Timber State Recreation Area are managed by Nebraska Game and Parks. A state park entry permit is required in addition to the camping fee, and sites can be reserved through the agency's reservation portal.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Blue Ox Factory and RV Park in Pender takes reservations by phone through the Blue Ox office, and the Onawa / Blue Lake KOA Holiday and Sunset at Blue Oasis RV Park - Onawa book through their own websites or, for the KOA, the KOA reservation system.
What to expect
Terrain is flat to gently rolling farmland and river bottom, with cottonwood shade at the Blue Lake campgrounds and bluff-top woods at Dead Timber. Sites at Lewis And Clark State Park include a mix of full-hookup and electric-only pads, modern restrooms and showers, and a trailer dump station, and the park accommodates large rigs.
Dead Timber is more rustic: 17 electric pads with 30-amp hookups on gravel or grass, primitive tent spots, drinking water and primitive restrooms, no showers, and no dump station. Plan on dumping before arrival.
Mosquitoes and biting flies can be heavy near the river and oxbow lake in summer, especially after wet spells. Cell coverage is generally reliable in Pender and around Onawa but can be patchy at Dead Timber. Roads into Dead Timber off Highway 275 are curvy, so drivers of longer rigs should slow down on the county-road approach.
