Campgrounds near Scribner
Scribner sits in Dodge County along the Elkhorn River in eastern Nebraska, roughly halfway between Fremont and West Point on U.S. Highway 275. The town is a practical base for RV travelers heading to state recreation areas along the Elkhorn and Platte river corridors, with Omaha and Lincoln both within a two-hour drive.
The closest camping is at Dead Timber State Recreation Area, a 200-acre park north of Scribner on Highway 275 with camping, fishing, hiking, picnicking, and non-powered boating. Farther south and east, Lake Wanahoo State Recreation Area sits just north of Wahoo and is popular with anglers and campers, and Cottonwood - Two Rivers State Recreation Area offers camping near the confluence of the Platte and Elkhorn Rivers west of Omaha near Waterloo.
Smaller options include Blue Ox Factory and RV Park, tied to the Blue Ox towing-equipment factory, and RiverWest Park along the Elkhorn River. Together these give RV travelers a mix of state-run lakeside sites, private hookups, and river-adjacent stays within an hour or so of Scribner.
Things to do near Scribner
Water activities dominate the area. Dead Timber's 50-acre oxbow lake holds bluegill, common carp, bullhead, channel and flathead catfish, crappie, freshwater drum, and largemouth bass, and boats must be human-powered or electric since motorized boats are not permitted. Lake Wanahoo is a no-wake lake known for bass, crappie, bluegill, catfish, walleye, and northern pike, which keeps paddling and small-boat fishing calm.
At Cottonwood - Two Rivers State Recreation Area, families have more variety. The park sits adjacent to the Platte River with seven ponds open to fishing, plus swimming, kayaking, picnicking, equestrian trails, and a playground. Ten refurbished Union Pacific cabooses converted into cabins that sleep six are a novelty for kids.
RiverWest Park adds river access on the Elkhorn for a different pace.

The prime RV window in eastern Nebraska runs from late April through mid-October. Summer is the busiest season and the best time for swimming and boating, but afternoon thunderstorms and high humidity are common. The Union Pacific caboose cabins at Two Rivers are available from mid-April through the end of September, which brackets the peak family-travel window.
Spring brings green landscapes and strong fishing, but also the region's wettest months and a risk of severe weather. Historic Elkhorn River flooding is a real consideration: a major flood washed out four primitive campsites at Dead Timber and submerged the stone shelter, and access via Highway 275 was limited for months afterward. Check park status before spring trips.
Fall is often the sweet spot: cooler nights, fewer bugs, and lighter reservation pressure. Winter camping is possible at year-round parks, though services are minimal. Dead Timber is open for year-round recreation including fishing, camping, and non-powered boating, but expect primitive conditions off-season.
How to book
Nebraska state recreation areas use the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reservation system, with sites at parks such as Cottonwood - Two Rivers State Recreation Area and Dead Timber State Recreation Area bookable up to one year in advance. All vehicles need a Nebraska state park entry permit, which is separate from camping fees, with daily and annual options and different rates for Nebraska-plated and non-Nebraska vehicles. Permits can be purchased online or on arrival.
Lake Wanahoo is managed separately. The Lower Platte North Natural Resources District owns the 1,777-acre property, and entrance requires a Lake Wanahoo NRD Recreation Area park permit sold at the LPNNRD office, online, at park kiosks, or at Super C in Wahoo. Half of the camping sites are reservable through ReserveAmerica and the rest are first-come. Private parks like Blue Ox Factory and RV Park and RiverWest Park are booked directly through the operator.
What to expect
Sites in this area lean toward electric-only hookups rather than full service. Dead Timber State Recreation Area has 17 electric campsites with 30-amp hookups, no shower facilities, and no dump station for RVs, so plan a dump stop elsewhere. Lake Wanahoo's west-side camping area offers 95 gravel camper pads with electrical hookups, 34 primitive tent sites, 6 primitive cabins, and a shower house.
At Cottonwood - Two Rivers State Recreation Area, the campground offers full hookup, electric-plus, and basic sites across seven camping areas, with modern restrooms, showers, and a dump station. Cell service is generally reliable across the region but Wi-Fi is rare.
Expect open, prairie-style sites with limited shade at newer lakes, and cottonwood-shaded loops at older parks along the rivers.
