Campgrounds near Claremont, New Hampshire
Claremont sits in western New Hampshire near the Connecticut River, with camping options spread across both sides of the state line. The closest developed campgrounds cluster around the river corridor and the flanks of Mount Ascutney, just across the border in Vermont. Most RV travelers base themselves within a fifteen to twenty minute drive of downtown Claremont.
Wilgus State Park sits on the Vermont bank of the Connecticut River and offers a stopover for paddlers as well as a base for exploring the river and nearby Mount Ascutney. Running Bear Camping Area sits at the foot of Mount Ascutney with convenient access to Interstate 91, exit 8, close to both Mount Ascutney State Park and Wilgus State Park.
Crown Point Camping Area in Perkinsville and Tree Farm Campground in Springfield round out the private-campground options west of the river. Tree Farm Campground is located in Springfield, Vermont, roughly a 20-minute drive from Claremont, and is well positioned for exploring southern Vermont and western New Hampshire.
Things to do near Claremont
The Connecticut River is the main draw for paddlers. Getting out on the water is the best part of camping at Wilgus State Park, where the river moves slowly enough to paddle upstream and outfitters in Windsor run shuttle services for day floats.
Mount Ascutney State Park offers a 12-mile trail network, leading to former quarries, homesteads, and other remains of past logging and settlement. Hikers can scale the mountain from several trailheads, or explore summit trails after driving up the 3.7-mile toll road. The park also has launches for hang gliding, and it is a favorite of hang glider and paraglider pilots.
In Claremont itself, Arrowhead Recreation Area offers hiking, mountain biking, and winter snow tubing on city-owned trails.

The camping season in this area is short and defined by the state park calendars. Mount Ascutney runs from the third weekend in May through the third weekend in October. Wilgus State Park operates on a similar mid-May through mid-October schedule. Private campgrounds around Ascutney and Springfield typically open in late April or early May and close by mid-October.
July and August are peak. Summer weekends fill quickly, and reservations made more than 7 days in advance require a two-night minimum, while one-night stays are allowed within 7 days of arrival, any day of the week. Fall foliage draws heavy demand from late September through Columbus Day, and riverfront and mountain-view sites go first.
Spring shoulder trips are quieter but wetter, with black-fly pressure through late May and June. Winter camping is not available at the state parks: the parks have no staff or facilities open during the winter months, though trails remain open to day users.
How to book Claremont-area campgrounds
Vermont state park sites at Wilgus and Mount Ascutney are booked through the Vermont State Parks reservation system online or by phone. Camping reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance on a rolling basis. For foliage weekends and July holidays, book as soon as the eleven-month window opens.
Private campgrounds handle their own bookings directly. Running Bear Camping Area, Crown Point Camping Area, and Tree Farm Campground all take reservations by phone or through their websites, and many hold sites on seasonal leases, so transient availability tightens in July and August.
For RV renters, confirm site length and hookup type before booking. The Vermont state parks in this area do not offer RV hookups, so travelers who need full service should plan on one of the private campgrounds.
What to expect at Claremont-area campgrounds
State park sites in this area are wooded and rustic. Mount Ascutney has 5 rental cabins, 38 tent/RV sites and 10 lean-tos, restrooms with flush toilets, hot and cold running water and coin-operated showers. Wilgus offers a smaller mix of tent sites, lean-tos, and cabins along the Connecticut River bank. Neither state park offers electric, water, or sewer RV hookups.
Private campgrounds are the choice for full hookups, pools, and family programming. Running Bear Camping Area is a family-oriented park with a playground, sports courts, and a heated pool, and it caters to activities for both children and adults.
One planning note: firewood cannot be brought into Vermont state parks from outside the state unless it is packaged, labeled, and heat-treated, with a label showing it is certified by the USDA or another state's agriculture department. Buy local bundles on arrival.

New Hampshire often has slightly lower pump prices than neighboring Vermont and Massachusetts, so consider filling up in Claremont or West Lebanon before crossing the river. A typical 4-day, 400-mile loop to Mount Sunapee, Quechee, and Woodstock typically runs roughly $120 to $200 in fuel depending on rig and prices. The Costco in West Lebanon, about 25 minutes north on I-91, is often a value option for diesel and gas in the Upper Valley.

For the best campgrounds near Claremont, NH, book as early as you can, especially for summer weekends and fall foliage. nhstateparks.org/visit/camping/make-a-reservationWhat are driving conditions like around Claremont?
Driving in and around Claremont is refreshingly mellow compared to bigger New England cities. You'll mostly be on Route 11, Route 12, Route 103, and I-91, all well-maintained with wide shoulders and gentle grades along the Connecticut River Valley. Watch for a few local factors: moose and deer especially at dawn and dusk on rural stretches near Unity and Goshen, frost heaves and pothole patches in spring (April to May), and sudden afternoon thunderstorms in summer. Downtown Claremont has a few narrow brick-lined streets near the historic mill district, so park larger rigs in open lots when visiting. Winter trips call for snow tires and confidence on icy backroads, plan accordingly.
dot.nh.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Claremont?
Campgrounds in the Claremont, NH area generally offer a good mix of comfort and rustic charm. Private parks in Newport typically provide full hookups (30/50 amp electric, water, and sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, dump stations, and potable water fills. State park campgrounds like Mount Ascutney and Wilgus across the river in Vermont lean more rustic, with electric and water at many sites but no sewer hookups, plus a centralized dump station and bathhouses. Most campgrounds sell firewood and ice and have a small camp store. Many rigs add a TV, Wi-Fi hotspot, outdoor speakers, an awning, and a generator for boondocking. Campervan rental Claremont options are more compact but include clever beds and kitchenettes. Each listing details exactly what's included, so message the host if you need something specific like a Pack 'n Play, bike rack, or extra bedding for a family RV trip in Claremont.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Claremont%2C%20New%20HampshireWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Claremont often offer add-ons that make life easier: kitchen kits, linen and towel packages, bike racks, kayak carriers, generators, camp chairs, fire pits, and outdoor mats. Many include free local delivery within a set radius, perfect for drops at Mount Ascutney or campgrounds in Newport, with longer hauls priced per mile. Pickup usually happens at the host's home in or near Claremont, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough. Mileage policies vary (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per night with a modest per-mile overage fee), and unlimited mileage is available on some listings. Always confirm dump and refuel expectations before drop-off to avoid extra fees.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Claremont%2C%20New%20HampshireHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and transparent. When you book your RV rental in Claremont, NH on RVezy, you pay through the secure platform, never directly to the host, so your money is protected by the booking system. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before the trip starts and is released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, typically within a few days of drop-off. To avoid any deposit issues, take dated photos at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, follow the mileage and pet rules, and empty the tanks if required.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Claremont during the winter?
Yes, winter RV rentals in Claremont, NH can be a beautiful and quieter option if you pick the right rig. Look for listings marked as four-season or winter-ready: these have heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, extra insulation, and reliable propane furnaces to handle Claremont's January temperatures, which often drop into the single digits or below. Many winter renters park at a host's property or a campground with shore power so they have constant heat and water. Pair your trip with snowshoeing at Arrowhead Recreation Area right in town, cross-country skiing near Mount Ascutney, or a day at Mount Sunapee. Ask your host for a snow shovel, sand or salt, and skirting for the rig before you head out.
