Camping near Newport, New Hampshire
Newport sits in the Sugar River valley of western New Hampshire, inside the Lake Sunapee region and roughly a half hour from Interstate 89. The area works well as an RV base for exploring Mount Sunapee State Park, the Connecticut River corridor along the Vermont line, and the network of forested hills, ponds, and rail trails that surround the town.
Campground options split between private RV parks and rustic state park sites. Crow's Nest Campground sits on the Sugar River just south of town on 34 acres and caters to RVs with hookups, a pool, and a family layout. Northstar Campground and Loon Lake Campground round out the closer private options for full-service stays.
For a more primitive experience, Pillsbury State Park Campground lies southeast of Newport in the town of Washington, and Wilgus State Park sits across the Connecticut River in Weathersfield, Vermont, with sites along the water. Both are seasonal and run by their respective state park systems.
Things to do around Newport
Paddling and fishing anchor most trips. Lake Sunapee, the Sugar River, and the Connecticut River all sit within a short drive, and the Sugar River Rail Trail runs near Crow's Nest Campground for easy cycling and walking access.
Hikers can climb Mount Sunapee, tackle sections of the 51-mile Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway that passes through Pillsbury State Park, or take shorter routes such as the Pinnacle Trail at Wilgus State Park to an overlook of the Connecticut River Valley.
Families tend to combine campground amenities, such as the pool, mini-golf, and rec hall at Crow's Nest, with day trips to Sunapee State Beach, covered bridges along the Sugar River, and canoe or kayak rentals available at both Pillsbury and Wilgus.

The core RV season in the Newport area runs from May through mid-October. State park campgrounds set the outer bounds: Pillsbury State Park opens in early May and runs through late October, with a fall primitive period at the end of the season, while Wilgus State Park operates from late April through the second Monday in October.
Summer is peak season. July and August bring warm days, full campgrounds, and the busiest paddling and swimming conditions. Booking well ahead is important, particularly for weekends and holidays, and Wilgus enforces a two-night minimum for summer reservations.
Spring can be muddy and buggy, with black flies common in May and early June. Fall foliage in late September and early October is a major draw across both New Hampshire and Vermont, and sites fill quickly during peak color. Winter camping is limited: Crow's Nest markets itself as a year-round campground, while the state park campgrounds close for the season.
How to book Newport campgrounds
Reservation systems vary by property. New Hampshire state park sites, including Pillsbury State Park Campground, are booked through ReserveAmerica on the New Hampshire State Parks portal or by calling 1-877-647-2757. The maximum reservation window is 11 months in advance, and sites become available at 8 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends exactly 11 months from the anticipated arrival date. On-site payment at Pillsbury goes through a self-serve iron ranger and is check or cash.
Vermont state parks, including Wilgus, are booked through the Vermont State Parks reservation website or by calling the reservation call center at 1-888-409-7579, up to 11 months ahead.
Private campgrounds such as Crow's Nest, Northstar, and Loon Lake take reservations directly through their own websites. For summer weekends and foliage season, book well in advance.
What to expect on site
Private campgrounds around Newport are geared toward RVs with full or partial hookups, Wi-Fi, and family amenities. Crow's Nest offers wooded, waterfront, and open field sites in the foothills of Mount Sunapee, along with a pool, rec hall, mini-golf, camp store, and a river swimming area. Riverfront sites can be tight and offer limited privacy.
State park campgrounds are more primitive. Pillsbury has 41 sites with no hookups, no showers, and no dump station, with potable water spigots, pit toilets, and limited to no cell service. Eleven sites are walk-in or canoe-to only. Wilgus has 15 tent and RV sites plus six lean-tos and four cabins, with a contact station that offers canoe and kayak rentals.
Out-of-state firewood is banned at both New Hampshire and Vermont state parks. Buy certified heat-treated firewood or purchase it on site.

How much does an RV rental in Newport, NH typically cost?
An RV rental in Newport, NH is one of the more affordable ways to explore the Lake Sunapee region. Expect nightly rates of roughly $95 to $175 for travel trailers, $150 to $260 for Class C motorhomes, and $210 to $375 for larger Class A coaches, before fees and mileage. Hosts set their own pricing, so you can filter by price range to find a cheap RV rental in Newport that fits your budget. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newport%2C%20New%20HampshireWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Newport, NH?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Newport, NH. New Hampshire does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally, even for larger Class A coaches. Approved RVezy renters are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform when you book, so there's no paperwork to track down at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set to roll toward Lake Sunapee.

Booking is lower risk than you might think. RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy for every RV rental in New Hampshire, including Newport, and there's a grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. After that, your refund depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. If the host cancels, you'll receive a refund or travel credit. Absolutely, your dog is invited. Many hosts on RVezy offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Newport, NH, and you can use the Pet-Friendly filter to see only those listings. Hosts set their own pet rules and any cleaning fees up front, so there are no surprises. Once you're here, your pup will love the leashed trails of Pillsbury State Park in nearby Washington, the Sugar River Rail Trail right out of downtown Newport, and the dog-friendly shores of Lake Sunapee State Beach in Newbury. Message the host before booking to confirm size and breed preferences, then start planning the tail-wagging part of the itinerary.
nhstateparks.org/visit/state-parks/pillsbury-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or driveway in Newport, NH?
Yes, RV delivery in Newport, NH is one of the best options for first-time renters. Many hosts will drive the motorhome or travel trailer straight to your campground, lakeside rental, or driveway, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Popular delivery destinations include private parks around Newport, Mount Sunapee State Park, and Lake Sunapee State Park in Newbury. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy, message the host with your address, and they'll quote a flat fee based on miles. It's the easiest way to enjoy a motorhome rental in Newport without ever driving it yourself.
nhstateparks.org/visit/state-parks/mount-sunapee-state-parkHow does mileage work, and can I find an RV rental with unlimited mileage?
You have options. Most Newport, NH hosts include a daily mileage allotment (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day) with a per-mile charge beyond that, while some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a longer RV road trip from Newport up to the White Mountains or across to coastal Maine. Each listing spells out the mileage policy on the booking page, so you'll know before you book. Pro tip: if you're planning short hops to Lake Sunapee and Mount Sunapee (about 12 miles away), a capped-mileage rig is usually the cheaper pick; for big loops, filter for unlimited mileage.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newport%2C%20New%20HampshireWhere are the best campgrounds near Newport, NH?
You're spoiled for choice within a short drive of Newport. Crow's Nest Campground in Newport offers full-hookup sites along the Sugar River and is a favorite for families. Northstar Campground in Newport has wooded sites, a pool, and easy access to the rail trail. Just up the road, Mount Sunapee area campgrounds in Newbury sit beside the lake with hiking and a swim beach, and Pillsbury State Park in Washington offers more rustic, quiet sites for nature lovers. Pro tip for RV camping in Newport: book New Hampshire State Parks sites the moment the reservation window opens, as summer weekends fill fast.
nhstateparks.org/visit/state-parks/pillsbury-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for a Newport, NH RV trip?
Newport shines in three very different seasons. Late June through August brings warm 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit days, perfect for swimming at Lake Sunapee and catching summer concerts on the town common bandstand. Mid-September to mid-October is the legendary New England foliage window, when the maples around Mount Sunapee turn brilliant colors and your Newport, NH RV trip turns into a postcard. Winter from December to March drops to roughly 10 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit and is ideal if you're chasing skiing at Mount Sunapee or Whaleback Mountain in a winter-ready rig. Insider tip: the Newport Winter Carnival is a uniquely local way to experience the season.
weather.gov/gyx/Is renting an RV in Newport, NH a good idea if it's my first time?
Yes, Newport is one of the friendliest places in New England to try it. First time renting an RV? Your host will meet you at pickup for a hands-on orientation covering hookups, slide-outs, the propane system, and dumping tanks, and you can text them throughout your trip with questions. Newport's roads are calm, mostly two-lane, and traffic is light compared to Boston or Manchester, so you'll get comfortable behind the wheel fast. Plus, RVezy's 24/7 roadside assistance has your back. Pro tip: pick a smaller Class C or travel trailer for your first trip, base yourself at one campground, and do day trips to Mount Sunapee just 12 miles away.
nh.gov/safety/divisions/dmv/What happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
Take a breath, you're covered. Every RV rental in Newport, NH includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 11, a dead battery at a Mount Sunapee trailhead, or a stuck slide at a Newport campground is just a phone call away from help. Roadside will dispatch a technician or tow to the nearest qualified shop. Your host is also a direct line for quick questions, like resetting the inverter or relighting a pilot. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number in your phone before leaving the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat road trip routes from Newport, NH are worth exploring?
You're sitting on one of New England's best RV launch pads. An RV road trip from Newport puts you about 45 miles (1 hour) from Concord, NH; 90 miles (about 2 hours) from the Kancamagus Highway in the White Mountains for fall foliage; 110 miles (about 2.25 hours) from Burlington, VT along Lake Champlain; 140 miles (about 2.75 hours) from Portland, ME for lobster and lighthouses; and around 200 miles (about 4 hours) from Acadia-adjacent coastal Maine. Travel into Canada may be allowed by some hosts but requires advance approval and confirmation of cross-border coverage; travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Message your host early to plan multi-state routes.
rvezy.com/blog/rv-road-trip-ideasHow much should I budget for fuel on a Newport, NH RV trip?
Fuel is easier to budget than most renters expect. Travel trailers towed by a pickup average roughly 10 to 14 mpg, Class C motorhomes get about 8 to 12 mpg, and bigger Class A coaches run 6 to 10 mpg. New Hampshire gas prices typically sit close to or slightly below the national average, and you'll find convenient stations right in Newport on John Stark Highway (Route 11/103) and in nearby Claremont. For a typical 4-night loop covering 300 miles around Lake Sunapee and the Upper Valley, plan on roughly $100 to $200 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Claremont or West Lebanon before heading into the White Mountains, where prices climb noticeably.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Newport, NH?
Earlier is better, but you have options. New Hampshire State Parks campgrounds, including those near Mount Sunapee and Pillsbury, take reservations through the official NH State Parks reservation system, and summer weekends plus foliage weekends in late September and early October are typically gone 4 to 6 months in advance. Private parks like Crow's Nest Campground and Northstar Campground in Newport are a bit easier and often have midweek availability 2 to 4 weeks out. Pro tip: if you strike out on a state park, ask your RVezy host about delivery to a private campground, and you'll often score a better site for less.
nhstateparks.org/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Newport, NH?
Driving an RV around Newport is refreshingly low-stress. The town sits on Route 11/103, a two-lane state highway with gentle grades, and traffic is light compared to southern New Hampshire. You'll cross the Sugar River often, and a few back roads (like the route to the Corbin Covered Bridge) have low clearances and tight turns, so stick to the main highways with anything over 10 feet tall. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March; if you're renting in those months, confirm with your host that the rig has winter-appropriate tires and a working furnace. Insider tip: the Newport rotary at Main Street can be tight for a long Class A, so swing wide and take it slow.
dot.nh.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Newport, NH?
You'll have everything you need close by. Private parks like Crow's Nest and Northstar in Newport offer full hookups (30/50-amp electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations. New Hampshire State Park campgrounds near Mount Sunapee and at Pillsbury lean more rustic with water and electric at many sites, vault or flush toilets, and central dump stations, but typically no sewer hookups at the site. For potable water fills and dumping between stays, Crow's Nest and state park dump stations are reliable options. Pro tip for RV camping in Newport: arrive with full fresh water if you're heading to a state park site, since spigots can be a walk away.
nhstateparks.org/visit/state-parks/pillsbury-state-parkWhat's actually inside the RV I'll rent in Newport, NH?
More creature comforts than you'd think. A typical campervan rental in Newport or Class C motorhome rental in Newport comes with real beds (queen or bunk layouts), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with furnace and air conditioning, a dinette, and seatbelted travel seats for everyone riding. Many rigs add a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, an awning, and an onboard generator for off-grid stays at Pillsbury State Park. Cell and Wi-Fi coverage can be spotty in the Upper Valley hills, so most hosts recommend a phone hotspot. Each listing shows photos and a full amenity list, so you can match the rig to your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newport%2C%20New%20HampshireWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for my Newport RV rental?
Customizing your rig is half the fun. Common add-ons from Newport, NH hosts include kitchen kits, linens and bedding, camp chairs, outdoor grills, bike racks, generator hours, kayak or paddleboard rentals (great for Lake Sunapee), and pet cleaning packages. Fees are listed on each booking page so you can see exactly what's included. For pickup and dropoff, most hosts meet you at their home in or near Newport along Route 11/103, while others offer delivery straight to a campground for a flat per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary by listing, with many offering 100 to 150 miles per day or unlimited mileage upgrades. Pro tip: bundle linens and a kitchen kit to skip packing half your house.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newport%2C%20New%20HampshireHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Newport, NH?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in Newport, NH through RVezy, you pay online with a credit or debit card directly through the platform, never cash to the host. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before your trip starts (amounts vary by rig and are shown clearly on the listing) and is released after your trip ends, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. To keep it smooth, take photos at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's tank-dumping and fuel-return instructions, and stay in touch by RVezy message. Pro tip: ask about the deposit hold timing so your card has the headroom for the trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Newport, NH during winter for skiing trips?
Yes, and it can be magical. Many Newport, NH hosts keep their rigs available year-round and equip them for cold-weather use, with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, propane furnaces, and shore-power-friendly setups, so you can post up near Mount Sunapee (about 12 miles), Whaleback Mountain in Enfield (about 20 miles), or Okemo just over the Vermont line (about 35 miles). Daytime highs from December to March run roughly 10 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit, with nights often well below freezing. Filter for winter-ready rentals, then ask your host about which campgrounds stay open. Insider tip: pair a ski day at Sunapee with the Newport Winter Carnival for a true New England weekend.
