Camping near Boles Acres, New Mexico
Boles Acres is a small residential community in Otero County, tucked into the southern edge of Alamogordo at the base of the Sacramento Mountains. It sits in the Tularosa Basin between the mountains and the gypsum dunes of White Sands, which puts RV travelers within a short drive of desert hiking, dark-sky stargazing, and the New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo.
RV options near Boles Acres range from full-hookup private parks to a developed state park campground. Nearby options include Desert Paradise MH and RV Park, White Sands Community RV Park Motorhome Park, and Oliver Lee Memorial State Park, along with 575 RV Park and the Alamogordo / White Sands KOA Journey closer to town. Private parks handle the pull-through, full-hookup crowd; the state park suits campers who want quieter sites against the mountains.
Oliver Lee Memorial State Park is managed by New Mexico State Parks and sits at the mouth of Dog Canyon. The park features a historic ranch house, quiet camping in the Chihuahuan Desert, and pools of water under cottonwood trees in the canyon.
Things to do around Boles Acres
White Sands National Park is the main draw, roughly a 20-minute drive west of Alamogordo. The park is day-use only for camping: the only overnight option, backcountry dune camping, is currently closed. Plan on sledding the dunes, driving Dunes Drive, and returning to camp before dark.
At Oliver Lee Memorial State Park, campers can walk the Riparian Nature Trail along Dog Canyon or take on the strenuous Dog Canyon National Recreational Trail, which climbs to views of the Tularosa Basin and the Organ Mountains. Guided weekend tours cover the restored Oliver Lee ranch house and museum, along with ruins of the adobe barn, slaughterhouse, and chicken house.
Alamogordo itself has the New Mexico Museum of Space History, and the Lincoln National Forest around Cloudcroft offers cooler-elevation hiking within about an hour's drive.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for an RV trip. Days are warm, nights are cool, and the desert is comfortable for hiking on the dunes and up Dog Canyon. Spring can be windy, and blowing sand is common in the Tularosa Basin from March into May.
Summer is hot in the basin, with afternoon highs regularly in the 90s F. July is the wettest month, and the North American Monsoon brings brief but intense afternoon thunderstorms from July through August, along with flash-flood risk in canyons and washes. Campers often plan hikes for early morning and retreat to shaded hookups by midday.
Winter is quiet and cold at night. Overnight temperatures commonly drop into the 20s F, so campers need four-season gear and can expect a frosty morning. Oliver Lee State Park and local RV parks remain open year-round, though some amenities may be limited in winter, for example water spigots turned off on freezing nights. Snow is occasional and light in the basin.
How to book campgrounds near Boles Acres
Oliver Lee Memorial State Park is reserved through the New Mexico State Parks system on ReserveAmerica, with a booking window that typically opens about 6 months out. The campground has 44 campsites, including 7 that are reservable; 18 sites have water and electric hookups, and the rest are dry sites. Camping reservations are available year-round, though some sites are first-come, first-served from June to September.
Before booking, note site limits: a few sites can accommodate RVs up to 45 feet long, but most driveways are 30 to 35 feet in length. The entry to the park is under construction, projected to wrap up around June 2026; during construction the group area is closed, no overflow camping is available, and the dump station is closed with alternate dump sites available upon request.
Private parks such as Desert Paradise MH and RV Park, White Sands Community RV Park Motorhome Park, 575 RV Park, and Alamogordo / White Sands KOA Journey book directly through their own websites or the KOA reservation platform.
What to expect on an RV trip near Boles Acres
This is high-desert camping at about 4,400 feet elevation. Expect wide temperature swings between day and night, low humidity, strong sun, and open sightlines to the mountains and dunes. Cell coverage is generally good for Verizon and AT&T users at Oliver Lee, and the private parks near Alamogordo have standard hookups and WiFi.
Missile testing is a routine trip-planning factor. White Sands National Park is surrounded by White Sands Missile Range, and tests periodically close the park and US Highway 70 with little notice. Build flexibility into any day plan that involves the national park.
Fire restrictions are common in the dry months. Under Stage II rules at New Mexico State Parks, wood and charcoal fires are prohibited and only LPG devices with an on/off valve are allowed. Pets are welcome at Oliver Lee on leash, and quiet, dark-sky nights are the norm.
