Campgrounds and RV parks near Doña Ana, NM

White Sands National Park is the marquee day trip, roughly an hour east of Doña Ana on US Highway 70. The park has no RV camping, so travelers base out of Las Cruces-area campgrounds and drive in for the dunes, sunset walks, and ranger programs. Highway 70 through the missile range is occasionally closed for short periods during tests. Closer to camp, the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument offers hiking at Dripping Springs and Aguirre Spring, and Old Mesilla has a historic plaza, restaurants, and green-chile shops. Leasburg Dam State Park offers a cactus garden, several hiking trails, and opportunities for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and birding, and features an observatory used for popular night-sky programs. The observatory is only open once a month for special events, so check park events for dates.

The Mesilla Valley has a semi-arid climate with large seasonal swings. Summers are hot, and winters are cold with occasional snowfall. Winter days are typically mild while nights drop below freezing, and this is prime snowbird season, with long-stay sites at parks like Hacienda RV Resort and Sunny Acres filling up from January through March. Spring is the region's most popular short-stay window, with warm daytime highs, wildflower blooms, and comfortable hiking weather. It is also the windy season, so expect gusty afternoons at exposed sites. Summer daytime highs routinely reach the mid-nineties and can top 100°F, and precipitation increases during late summer, often arriving as brief showers tied to the North American Monsoon, which can bring intense thunderstorms and localized flash flooding from July into September. Fall is arguably the best all-around window, with cooler nights, calmer air, and the Hatch chile harvest peaking in late summer and early fall. Leasburg Dam State Park stays open year-round, and most private parks in the area operate every month.

Most private parks in the Las Cruces area offer full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, level pads, WiFi, laundry, and showers. Hacienda RV Resort has a gated entrance and big-rig-friendly pads; Las Cruces KOA Journey has a pool, pull-through sites, and a playground; Sunny Acres offers 100 full-hookup sites with 30/50 amp service, clean restrooms, laundry, cable TV, a clubhouse with kitchen and billiards, plus pickleball, horseshoes, and a dog park; and Coachlight is a no-frills stopover close to I-10. Leasburg Dam State Park is more rustic, with developed sites, electric hookups on some sites, vault and flush toilets, and a dump station. Note that the main comfort station and dump station will be closed for improvements from late February through June 2026, with portable restrooms and handwashing stations available on-site. Fire restrictions can escalate quickly in dry months, and building or using wood or charcoal fires may be prohibited while devices fueled solely by liquid petroleum or LPG are still allowed. Pets are welcome across most area parks on a short leash.
