Camping near Glorieta, New Mexico
Glorieta sits in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico, roughly halfway between Santa Fe and the village of Pecos along I-25. The area serves as a natural staging point for the Santa Fe National Forest, Pecos Canyon State Park, and Pecos National Historical Park, all reachable within a short drive. Elevations at nearby campgrounds range from about 7,000 feet on the Santa Fe side to well over 8,000 feet up the canyon, so nights stay cool even in midsummer.
RV travelers have a mix of options within a 30-minute radius. Santa Fe KOA Journey sits at 934 Old Las Vegas Highway in Santa Fe, and Rancheros De Santa Fe Campground is on the same corridor, both offering established sites with hookups. Hyde Memorial State Park sits about 8 miles northeast of Santa Fe in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, alongside Little Tesuque Creek at an elevation of 8,500 feet, with tent sites and a small number of electric sites. Up the Pecos River canyon, Bert Clancy and Terrerro (both units of Pecos Canyon State Park) put campers on the water for trout fishing.
The corridor is easy to reach off I-25 exits 299 (Glorieta) and 307 (Rowe), and paved state highways connect the developed campgrounds. Backcountry forest roads leading to dispersed sites vary in condition and are not recommended for large rigs.
Things to do around Glorieta
Trout fishing is the headline activity in the Pecos River canyon. This high-elevation, forested park situated near Santa Fe offers prime mountain camping and trout fishing on the Pecos River and its tributaries, and is surrounded by the Santa Fe National Forest, including the nearby Pecos Wilderness. Bert Clancy and Terrerro both provide river access from the campground.
Hiking is the other main draw. Park visitors at Hyde Memorial also have access to several picnic areas, a playground, volleyball court, and more than 4 miles of local hiking trails. Hyde Memorial can be enjoyed in the winter months too with snowshoeing, sledding and cross-country skiing. Trails from the park connect into the national forest and the Pecos Wilderness.
For a day off the trail, Pecos National Historical Park preserves the Pecos Pueblo ruins and the Glorieta Pass Civil War battlefield, and downtown Santa Fe, with its plaza, museums, and galleries, is about 20 minutes west.

Peak season runs from late May through mid-October. Days are warm, nights are cool thanks to elevation, and the higher-country trails are snow-free. Afternoon thunderstorms are routine in July and August during the North American monsoon, so plan hikes for the morning and secure awnings before storms roll through.
Spring is dry and windy. Stage-type fire restrictions are common: wood fires may be prohibited while LP gas devices remain allowed, and Red Flag warnings for wind and low humidity are frequent. Always check current fire orders before arrival, as restrictions can tighten to a full ban.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Pecos Canyon State Park lists its status as open year round, and Hyde Memorial campgrounds stay open all year long, except under unusually heavy snow conditions. Expect freezing nights and possible snow at the higher-elevation state park sites from November through March. The Mora unit of Pecos Canyon State Park has been walk-up only during recent construction work, which can shift demand to Bert Clancy and Terrerro.
How to book campgrounds near Glorieta
State park sites use the New Mexico State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. At Pecos Canyon State Park, reservations can be made for today and up to 6 months in advance. Hyde Memorial reservation windows vary by site type: some sites are bookable for today and up to 6 months in advance, while other sites must be reserved 2 weeks ahead of arrival and can be booked up to 12 months in advance. Bert Clancy and Terrerro sites fill quickly for summer weekends; midweek is easier.
Private parks book directly. Santa Fe KOA Journey is open all year and takes reservations by phone and online, with check-in for RV and tent sites at 1:00 pm, cabin check-in at 3:00 pm, and check-out at 11:00 am. Rancheros De Santa Fe Campground books through its own website and phone line.
Bring proof of your reservation with you to your campsite, and contact the park if arrival will be late, as sites can be released for reservations or first come, first served on the second day after 4:00 p.m.
What to expect on the ground
Elevation is the biggest planning factor. Hyde Memorial sits alongside Little Tesuque Creek at an elevation of 8,500 feet, which makes the area a little cooler than the city in the valley below. Bring layers for after dark even in July, and expect reduced engine and generator performance at altitude.
Hookups vary widely. Santa Fe KOA Journey has both 30 and 50-amp hookups, pull-through sites, and big rig accommodations at roughly 7,000 feet elevation. Hyde Memorial has nice tent sites and a few electric sites for RVs, a few of which are reservable, with water available and vault toilets but no showers. A dump station is located near the park entrance. Pecos Canyon sites are more rustic.
Cell service is spotty in the canyon and on forest roads. Download offline maps before leaving Santa Fe, and top off water and fuel in town.
