Campgrounds and RV parks near Hagerman, NM

Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge, just north of Hagerman, is the main draw for nature-focused RVers. It protects wetlands along the Pecos River and is a well-known stop for lesser sandhill cranes, snow geese, and more than 100 species of dragonflies and damselflies. An eight-mile auto-tour loop keeps most viewing accessible without leaving the vehicle. Lea Lake at Bottomless Lakes State Park allows swimming, paddleboarding, and scuba diving in clear, cold water, with short trails around the sinkhole lakes. Roswell, about 15 miles from the state park, has the International UFO Museum, a walkable downtown, and grocery resupply. Southbound day trips reach Carlsbad Caverns National Park in under two hours, and Sitting Bull Falls in the Lincoln National Forest offers a shaded picnic and swim spot in the Guadalupe foothills.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in the Pecos Valley. From March through May, daytime highs climb from the 70s into the upper 80s Fahrenheit, migratory songbirds pass through Bitter Lake, and overnight lows stay comfortable. Wind is the main spring drawback, with gusty afternoons common through April. Summer is hot and dry early on, with June highs regularly in the mid-90s and July and August bringing the North American Monsoon. Afternoon thunderstorms can be brief but intense, and flash flooding is a known risk on arroyos and low crossings, per National Weather Service guidance for southeast New Mexico. Fall reopens the best conditions: warm days, cool nights, and peak wildlife viewing at Bitter Lake as lesser sandhill cranes and snow geese arrive starting in October and continue through the winter, with peak concentrations around November. Winters are cool to mild by RV standards, with overnight freezes common and occasional snow, so shoulder-season and snowbird travel remain viable.

Terrain is flat and open, and access roads to the main parks are paved and rig-friendly. Cell coverage is reliable along US 285 and in Roswell and Artesia, and weakens on refuge back roads and in the Guadalupe Mountains. Fuel, groceries, propane, and RV supply stops are easiest to handle in Roswell or Artesia rather than in Hagerman itself. Shade is limited at most sites, so awnings and reflective window covers make a real difference in summer. Lea Lake sites include hookups and a shade shelter, and the campground stays open year-round, though the day-use bathhouse closes from late October through the end of March. Wildlife includes rattlesnakes in warmer months and skunks and coyotes around campgrounds, so food should stay secured overnight.
