Palo Duro Canyon is the headline outing. The park has roughly 50 miles of multi-use trails ranging from short walks to the well-known Lighthouse Trail, plus a scenic drive, mountain biking, and horseback rides through the Old West Stables. In summer, families can catch the TEXAS Outdoor Musical at the Pioneer Amphitheater near the Sagebrush camping area. Amarillo, a short drive north, adds a full day of stops: Cadillac Ranch off Route 66 (bring spray paint), the Amarillo Zoo, the Don Harrington Discovery Center, Wildcat Bluff Nature Center, and the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and Museum. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in the Panhandle. Days warm quickly, nights stay cool, and outdoor activities are pleasant. Spring also brings the region's most active severe-weather season: this is Tornado Alley, and afternoon thunderstorms with large hail, damaging wind, and flash flooding are common from April through June. Palo Duro Canyon is subject to flash flooding, so campers should watch forecasts closely. Summer is peak visitation and the hottest stretch. Temperatures on the canyon floor can run 5 to 10 degrees hotter than on the rim, and Palo Duro closes the Lighthouse, Comanche, Givens-Spicer-Lowry, and Rock Garden trails from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on days when the National Weather Service issues a heat advisory. Reservations fill quickly around holiday weekends and TEXAS Outdoor Musical performances. Winters are cold, dry, and windy, with freezing nights common from December through February and occasional snow. Most private RV parks remain open year-round, and Palo Duro stays open, though some backcountry and equestrian areas close temporarily during scheduled hunt dates in December.

The landscape is high, open plains at roughly 3,600 feet of elevation, cut by the dramatic red-rock walls of Palo Duro Canyon. Expect wide horizons, big skies, strong sustained wind, and rapid temperature swings between day and night, especially in the shoulder seasons. At Palo Duro, all campers check in at Park Headquarters before occupying a site. The entrance gate is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and late arrivals follow a permit-envelope system at Headquarters. Sites are limited to eight people. Cell coverage on the canyon floor can be spotty. Summer hikers should carry roughly one liter of water per person per mile, hike early or late, and stay on marked trails. Flash-flood warnings should be taken seriously, and burn bans are common in dry stretches, so containerized fuel stoves are the safest cooking option.
