The Cimarron National Grassland is the main draw. A self-guided auto tour of about 30 miles on mostly dirt roads follows the Santa Fe National Historic Trail across the grassland, with stops at Middle Spring and Point of Rocks, a flat-topped bluff that is the third-highest point in Kansas and was used as a lookout by wagon trains on the Cimarron Cutoff. Wagon ruts are still visible in places. Hiking is easy and open. The Santa Fe Companion Trail runs about 19 miles across the grassland, and the Turkey Trail adds another 10.5 miles through the wooded Cimarron River corridor. Fishing is available at the Cimarron, Mallard, Point of Rocks, and Wilburton ponds, stocked with trout in winter and channel catfish in summer. Birding is a major activity, particularly for lesser prairie chickens at their spring leks, along with wild turkeys and migrating songbirds. Point of Rocks Pond and Mallard Pond are quiet spots to picnic between drives.

Elkhart has a cool semi-arid climate with hot summers and dry, cold-snap-prone winters. Late spring, from mid-April through May, is the most comfortable window: temperatures are moderate, wildflowers on the shortgrass prairie bloom while winter soil moisture is still present, and lesser prairie chicken leks are active from mid-March into early June. Wind is a constant year round. Summer brings sustained heat, often into the 90s Fahrenheit, with afternoon thunderstorms that produce most of the area's roughly 18 to 19 inches of annual precipitation. Storms can bring hail, lightning, and tornado risk. Shade is limited outside the cottonwoods along the Cimarron River corridor. Fall reliably cools off by mid-September and offers a second wildflower bloom after late-summer rains, plus fall hunting seasons on the grassland and nearby state wildlife areas. Winters are dry and windy, with cold outbreaks driving nights to or below zero Fahrenheit on average several nights per season. Grassland dirt roads become impassable after rain or snow, so travelers should avoid off-highway routes when wet.

This is remote high plains country. Elkhart itself has groceries, fuel, and a few restaurants, but services thin out quickly once travelers leave town. Cell coverage on the grassland is spotty, and there is no camp store or concession on Forest Service land. Developed grassland sites are basic: pit toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, tent pads, and a pair of water hydrants, with no electricity, no showers, and no dump station. Some back-in sites are deep enough for a 30-foot RV and tow vehicle. Prairie RV Park and Wash in town is the main option for full hookups and a rinse-down after dusty roads. Expect wind, big temperature swings, and long sight lines. Roads off the main highways are gravel or dirt and rough after rain. Rattlesnakes are present in warm months, and cottonwood groves along the Cimarron River provide the only meaningful shade.
