Palo Duro Canyon State Park is the headline draw, about 45 minutes southeast. The park features dramatic red, orange, and brown canyon walls with an extensive network of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails suitable for various skill levels. A roughly 16-mile scenic drive descends to the canyon floor, so drives work well for families who do not want a long hike. Mountain biking, horseback riding at the Old West Stables, and ranger-led programs are also available. In summer, the outdoor musical TEXAS runs at the Pioneer Amphitheater inside the park, typically from early June through mid-August. Lake Meredith National Recreation Area north of Amarillo adds boating and primitive camping. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in the Bushland and Amarillo area.
