Camping near La Madera, New Mexico
La Madera is a small community in Sandoval County at the eastern base of the Sandia Mountains, roughly a 25-minute drive from Albuquerque along the Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway (NM 14). The area sits near 7,000 feet in elevation, with cooler summer nights than the valley and easy access to Cibola National Forest, Sandia Peak, and the artist village of Madrid.
Private RV parks cluster along the Turquoise Trail corridor and nearby Tijeras. Turquoise Trail Campground & RV Park in Cedar Crest offers full hookup sites with 20/30/50-amp service, showers, laundry, and a playground. Turquoise Trail Campgrounds, also in the Sandias near Cedar Crest, provides pull-through sites for larger rigs and dump station access. Albuquerque Tijeras Mountain RV Resort sits just off I-40 at the mouth of Tijeras Canyon, while Hidden Valley Camping Resort and Leisure Mountain RV Park round out the local options.
Public camping is handled by the Cibola National Forest Sandia Ranger District, which manages developed sites, dispersed camping zones, and picnic areas throughout the surrounding mountains.
Things to do near La Madera
The Sandia Mountains dominate the local recreation menu. Visitors ride the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway or drive the Sandia Crest National Scenic Byway (NM 536) for panoramic views across central New Mexico, and hike or mountain bike an extensive trail network from trailheads on both slopes.
The Turquoise Trail links Albuquerque and Santa Fe through Cedar Crest, Madrid, and Cerrillos, passing galleries, historic mining sites, and the Museum of Archaeology and Material Culture. The Manzanita Mountains south of I-40 hold a network of shared-use single-track and equestrian trails suited to intermediate and advanced riders.
Downtown Albuquerque, Old Town, the ABQ BioPark, and Petroglyph National Monument are all within about a 30 to 40-minute drive, making La Madera a workable basecamp for both mountain days and city excursions.

Late spring through early fall is the main RV season. May and June bring warm, dry days and cool nights at elevation, with fire restrictions common by early summer during dry years. The North American Monsoon typically arrives in July and continues through August, producing brief but intense afternoon thunderstorms; July and August are the wettest months in the Sandia Park area.
September and October are widely considered the best months for touring. Days are mild, monsoon activity fades, aspen colors peak on the upper Sandias in late September to mid-October, and the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta draws heavy visitation in early October, filling area RV parks weeks in advance.
Winter is cold at 7,000 feet, with snow possible from November through March and occasional closures on the Sandia Crest Road. Many public forest picnic sites reduce services or close seasonally, though several private RV parks along the Turquoise Trail remain open year-round for travelers passing through on I-40.

How to book campgrounds near La Madera
Private RV parks in the area, including Turquoise Trail Campground & RV Park, Turquoise Trail Campgrounds, Albuquerque Tijeras Mountain RV Resort, Hidden Valley Camping Resort, and Leisure Mountain RV Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Booking two to three months ahead is recommended for weekends between Memorial Day and mid-October, and much earlier for Balloon Fiesta week.
Group picnic sites and reservable areas on Cibola National Forest, including sites along the Sandia Crest Scenic Byway and the Cedro Peak group sites, are reserved through Recreation.gov. The Sandia Ranger District office in Tijeras (505-281-3304) handles permits, passes, and questions about fire restrictions and seasonal closures. Dispersed camping is allowed at signed sites in the Manzanita Rec Zone on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation required.
What to expect
Elevations around La Madera run near 7,000 feet, so temperatures are notably cooler than Albuquerque and nights stay chilly even in July. New arrivals from lower elevations may feel mild altitude effects for a day; extra water and slower pacing help.
Roads into Cedar Crest and Sandia Park are paved and RV-friendly, though the upper section of the Sandia Crest Byway has tight switchbacks that are unsuitable for the largest rigs and travel trailers. Fuel, groceries, and dump stations are available in Tijeras, Cedar Crest, and Edgewood.
Bears are active in the Sandias from spring through fall, so campers should use bear-proof containers or store food and trash inside the RV. Summer thunderstorms can produce lightning, hail, and flash flooding in canyons; monitor forecasts before hiking, and expect a daily amenity fee for parking at developed Sandia Ranger District recreation sites.
