Campgrounds near Livingston Wheeler
Livingston Wheeler is an unincorporated community in Eddy County, New Mexico, located on the southeastern edge of Carlsbad along New Mexico State Road 216. For RV travelers, the area functions as a quiet base a few minutes from Carlsbad city services and roughly a half-hour drive from the entrance to Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
Most RV parks sit inside or just outside Carlsbad proper, which puts them within easy reach of Livingston Wheeler. Cowboys Country RV Park, Carlsbad RV Park and Campground, Bud's Place RV Park, North Star RV Park, and Country RV Park - Carlsbad all offer full-hookup sites geared to travelers passing through on US-62/180 or US-285.
The Pecos River flows past to the north, adding a paddling and fishing option to a trip otherwise dominated by desert and cavern scenery. Elevation sits near 3,100 feet, so temperature swings are noticeable between day and night in the shoulder seasons.
Things to do near Livingston Wheeler
Carlsbad Caverns National Park is the anchor attraction, with self-guided walks into the Big Room and ranger-led tours into more remote passages. The bat flight program at the natural entrance draws visitors on summer evenings, with July and August the best months for viewing. Guadalupe Mountains National Park lies about an hour south across the Texas line and adds high-desert hiking, including the trail up Guadalupe Peak.
In town, the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park showcases Chihuahuan Desert plants and animals in a compact, walkable layout that suits families. Lake Carlsbad Beach Park and the Pecos River give visitors a place to swim, paddle, and cool off.
Sitting Bull Falls, a spring-fed waterfall in the Lincoln National Forest west of Carlsbad, is a popular day trip when water levels allow.

Carlsbad has a hot semi-arid climate with cool to warm winters and very hot summers, and Livingston Wheeler shares that pattern. The warmer months average 121 days at or above 90°F and 35 days above 100°F, so mid-summer RV travel calls for strong air conditioning, shade planning, and early-morning outings.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for exploring the caverns and surrounding desert. Wind is common in March and April, and afternoons in April and May can push into the 90s. In summer, Carlsbad is affected by the North American monsoon, which can bring heavy rainfall and mudslides, so travelers should watch flash-flood forecasts on side roads and canyon trails.
Winters are mild by day and cold at night. There are 69 nights at or below freezing in the colder months, which is worth planning for when it comes to hose management and holding tanks. Snow accumulation is minor in most years.
How to book
Private RV parks in and around Carlsbad, including Cowboys Country RV Park, Carlsbad RV Park and Campground, Bud's Place RV Park, North Star RV Park, and Country RV Park - Carlsbad, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Some also list availability on third-party campground marketplaces. Booking a week or two ahead is usually enough outside of holiday weekends and the spring school-break window.
Carlsbad Caverns National Park has no in-park lodging or campgrounds, so RV travelers stay at private parks nearby. Cave tour tickets require a park entry pass and a reservation, which can be made online through Recreation.gov or by phone, and peak dates often sell out, so reserve tour times before locking in a campsite.
What to expect
Expect a working-town setting rather than a scenic destination in itself. Carlsbad is a hub for the regional potash and oil-and-gas industries, which means steady demand for RV sites from traveling workers alongside tourists. Weekday availability can be tighter than in typical vacation towns, and long-stay guests are common at several parks.
Sites are generally level gravel or paved pads with full hookups, and many parks accommodate larger rigs. Shade is limited, so awnings and reflective window covers help in summer. Cell service is reliable in and around Carlsbad but drops off inside Carlsbad Caverns and along backcountry roads.
Stock up on groceries, propane, and water in Carlsbad before heading toward the park or the Guadalupe Mountains.
