Campgrounds and RV parks near White Sands, NM

The main draw is Dunes Drive, an eight-mile scenic road that leads into the heart of the gypsum dunefield. Renters typically spend a half or full day driving the loop, walking the Interdune Boardwalk, and hiking marked trails that range from easy to strenuous across loose sand. Sledding down the dunes is the signature family activity. Waxed plastic saucers work best and can be picked up at the visitor center gift shop or brought from home. Sunset and full-moon evenings draw crowds for photography and cooler temperatures. Outside the park, day trips include the New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo, Oliver Lee Memorial State Park at the base of the Sacramento Mountains, and cooler high-elevation drives into Lincoln National Forest. Las Cruces adds the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument and the historic Old Mesilla plaza.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. Daytime highs are moderate, evenings are cool, and the dunefield is far more walkable than in summer. These shoulder seasons also line up well with school breaks and holiday weekends, so private RV parks in Las Cruces and Alamogordo book earlier than in the off months. Summer brings intense heat, with afternoon temperatures regularly topping 90 degrees on exposed sand. The North American Monsoon delivers most of the annual rainfall from July into September, usually as short, strong afternoon thunderstorms that can prompt temporary road and trail closures. Early-morning and late-evening visits are the practical strategy. Winter days are often pleasant and quiet, but overnight lows drop below freezing, and campers should plan for cold-weather RV operation. The park is also occasionally closed for a few hours at a time due to missile testing on the surrounding White Sands Missile Range, so checking the closure schedule before driving in is wise year-round.

Renters should plan around the dry, sun-exposed desert environment. Shade is limited at most RV parks and nearly nonexistent inside the dunefield, so awnings, sunshades, and a stocked water supply matter. A gallon per person per day is a reasonable baseline for any time spent walking the sand. Cell coverage is generally strong across the Alamogordo and Las Cruces corridors on major carriers, which makes navigation and remote work straightforward. Most nearby private parks offer full hookups, dump stations, and pull-through sites suitable for larger rigs. Expect occasional short-notice park closures tied to missile-range testing, high winds that can whip up blowing gypsum, and cool nights even after hot days. Checking the park's alerts page the morning of a visit avoids surprises at the entrance gate.
