Camping near Alexandria Bay, New York
Alexandria Bay sits on the St. Lawrence River in the heart of the Thousand Islands region, where granite islands, quiet channels, and boat-in coves define the camping options. Most sites within a short drive are New York state park campgrounds on the mainland or on Wellesley Island, with a cluster of privately run RV resorts and marinas filling in the gaps.
Keewaydin State Park, just west of the village on the St. Lawrence River, is the closest public option and a common base for RV travelers exploring the bay. Dewolf Point State Park and Kring Point State Park offer quieter waterfront loops on Wellesley Island and a nearby peninsula, while Swan Bay Resort and Marina provides private RV sites with river access.
For paddlers and boaters willing to cross into Canadian waters, Thousand Islands National Park offers primitive island camping accessible only by boat, with composting toilets and no potable water or showers on the islands. Together, these campgrounds cover the range from developed state park sites to backcountry tent pads.
Things to do around Alexandria Bay
The St. Lawrence River is the main draw. Boat tours out of Alexandria Bay run to Boldt Castle on Heart Island and Singer Castle on Dark Island, and rentals for boats, kayaks, and paddleboards are easy to find in the village. Fishing for smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye, and muskellunge is a regional signature.
On land, Keewaydin State Park has an Olympic-sized swimming pool, marina, and short riverfront trails, while Wellesley Island (home to Dewolf Point State Park) offers hiking and a nature center. Kring Point State Park sits on a narrow peninsula with swimming beaches. Across the river, Thousand Islands National Park offers wooded trails, red chairs, and interpretive programs from the Mallorytown Landing visitor centre.

The camping season in the Thousand Islands is short and clearly defined by the river's climate. New York state park campgrounds around Alexandria Bay typically open in late May and close in early September, with a few loops extending slightly into the shoulder season depending on staffing and weather. Thousand Islands National Park on the Canadian side operates from mid-May through mid-October, with facilities unmaintained outside that window.
July and August are peak months, with warm river temperatures, full ferry and tour schedules, and the busiest weekends of the year. Waterfront sites at Keewaydin, Kring Point, and Dewolf Point book out months ahead for summer holiday weekends. Early June and the first half of September tend to be quieter, with cooler nights and fewer bugs. Fall on the Canadian side often brings comfortable weather and river-country color.
Winter shuts down public campgrounds entirely. Snow, ice on the river, and closed facilities mean RV travel in the region is limited to the warmer half of the year.
How to book campgrounds near Alexandria Bay
New York state park campgrounds, including Keewaydin, Dewolf Point, and Kring Point, are reserved through the ReserveAmerica system operated by New York State Parks. Bookings open on a rolling nine-month window, so summer weekend sites become available in the fall and winter of the prior year. Popular waterfront sites can go quickly at the nine-month mark.
Swan Bay Resort and Marina and other private RV parks take reservations directly through their own website or by phone, and often require deposits for peak-season stays.
Island camping and oTENTik reservations for Thousand Islands National Park open in early February for the coming season through the Parks Canada Reservation Service. Reservable sites include island campsites plus oTENTik roofed accommodations on the mainland and on McDonald and Gordon islands.
What to expect on the ground
State park campgrounds around Alexandria Bay are relatively rustic by RV standards. Keewaydin, for example, has 48 sites with no hookups, though a dump station, flush toilets, and hot showers are available on site. Sewer and electric hookups at individual sites are rare in the New York state park system in this area, so plan around the dump station on the way in or out. Cell coverage is generally reliable near the village and thinner on the island loops.
Mosquitoes and black flies peak in late May and June. Bring bug spray, and expect cool nights on the river even in July.
Primitive camping in Thousand Islands National Park is very different: access to the islands is by boat only, campers must arrange their own transportation, potable water is not available on park islands, sites have composting toilets, and showers are not available in the park's island campgrounds. Pack in everything, including drinking water.

To find delivery options, use the Delivery filter on the search page, then message the host with your campground name to confirm the fee, which typically scales with distance. Wellesley Island State Park, just over the Thousand Islands Bridge, offers hundreds of sites, a marina, and a nature center. Kring Point State Park is a quiet peninsula with water on three sides, and Grass Point State Park is family-friendly with a sandy swim beach. For a private option, Association Island RV Resort in nearby Henderson Harbor has lakefront sites. Reserve through ReserveAmerica up to 9 months ahead, since summer weekends sell out fast.
parks.ny.gov/parks/wellesleyislandWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip to Alexandria Bay?
Late June through early September is the sweet spot for RV camping in Alexandria Bay, with daytime highs in the 75 to 82 degree range and warm enough river water for swimming and boat tours. July and August are peak season for Bill Johnston's Pirate Days and the Antique Boat Show, so book early. Shoulder seasons are the insider move, mid-May to mid-June offers fewer crowds and blooming shorelines, while September brings stunning early fall color along the St. Lawrence and nightly lows in the 50s, perfect campfire weather. Most campgrounds close by mid-October once temperatures dip toward freezing.
weather.gov/buf/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Alexandria Bay?
You'll do great, Alexandria Bay is genuinely one of the easier places in New York to learn. Roads around town are flat, well-marked, and traffic is light outside of summer weekends. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, propane, water, and dump procedures, and they're a text away during your trip. Stick to Route 12 and I-81 for the smoothest driving, and avoid the narrow lanes of downtown Alex Bay village in larger Class A motorhomes, park at your campground and walk in instead. If you're truly nervous about the wheel, book delivery and you won't drive at all.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/driver-manuals-and-practice-testsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan. If you get a flat near the Thousand Islands Bridge, run out of fuel on Route 37, or have a mechanical issue at Cedar Point State Park, just call the roadside number in your RVezy app and help is dispatched. Your host is also reachable directly through the app for quick troubleshooting, and often a five-minute call solves things like a tripped breaker or a finicky water pump. RVezy customer support is there before, during, and after your trip too.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Alexandria Bay RV rental across the border into Canada?
Often yes. Alexandria Bay sits right at the Thousand Islands Bridge crossing into Ontario, and many RVezy hosts allow cross-border travel into Canada with advance approval. Message the host directly from the listing before you book to confirm, and they can provide a written travel authorization letter to show at the border along with your passport. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Popular Canadian add-ons from Alexandria Bay include Kingston (about 45 minutes), Ottawa (about 2 hours), and Prince Edward County wine country (about 2 hours). Bring passports for everyone in your party, including kids.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Thousand Islands RV trip?
Fuel is very manageable here because distances are short. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG), and campervans can hit 18 to 22 MPG. Gas in Jefferson County, NY usually runs slightly below the New York state average, with stations in Watertown about 12 miles south often cheaper than in Alex Bay itself. For a typical 4-day Thousand Islands loop of around 250 miles, budget roughly $80 to $150 in fuel for a Class C. Fill up in Watertown before heading north to save a few dollars per tank.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Alexandria Bay?
For summer weekends, book as early as you can, New York State Parks open reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and waterfront sites at Wellesley Island, Keewaydin, and Grass Point are claimed within hours of opening for July and August. For midweek summer stays, 2 to 3 months out usually works. Shoulder season (May, June, September) is much more relaxed, even 2 weeks ahead often gets you a great spot. Pro tip, if your dream park is full, check daily, cancellations pop up constantly, especially 7 days before arrival when balances are due.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What are driving conditions like around Alexandria Bay?
Driving around Alexandria Bay is refreshingly mellow. Route 12 hugs the St. Lawrence with gentle curves and beautiful river views, I-81 is a wide, straight interstate connecting you to Watertown and Syracuse, and most secondary roads are flat farmland. Watch for two things, the Thousand Islands Bridge has a moderate grade and gets windy (slow down in big rigs), and deer are very active at dawn and dusk in Jefferson County, especially September through November. In winter, lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario can be intense, but if you're renting May through October, you'll have clear, easy driving throughout your Alexandria Bay RV trip.
511ny.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Alexandria Bay?
You'll find excellent facilities across local campgrounds. Most New York State Parks near Alexandria Bay, including Wellesley Island, Keewaydin, and Grass Point, offer a mix of full-hookup, electric-only, and tent sites, plus hot showers, flush toilets, dump stations, and potable water fill stations. Private parks like Association Island RV Resort add Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. If your site is electric-only, you can dump tanks and refill fresh water at the park's central dump station on your way out, no charge for registered campers. Many sites also include a fire ring and picnic table, so all you really need to bring is firewood (buy it locally to protect against invasive pests).
parks.ny.gov/camping/campground-amenities.aspxWhat is included inside an RVezy motorhome rental in Alexandria Bay?

Expect a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the RV, and climate control via air conditioning and furnace. Class C and Class A units have seatbelts for travel passengers, which matters if you are road-tripping with kids. Each add-on shows a clear price right on the listing, so there are no surprises. Pickup is usually at the host's home or an agreed meetup spot, and many hosts offer delivery to your campground for a flat fee. Mileage policies are set per listing, with some hosts offering unlimited mileage (great for Adirondack day trips) and others including a daily allowance. Filter and message hosts to find your perfect match.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Alexandria%20Bay%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you book and pay right through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, with no cash exchanged with the host. A separate security deposit hold is placed on your card before the trip starts (the amount is shown clearly on the listing) and is released after the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues, do a quick walkaround video with your host at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's fuel and tank dumping instructions, and return on time. That is it, you will be enjoying sunset over the St. Lawrence without a money worry in sight.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Alexandria Bay in late fall or winter?
Yes, off-season rentals are available and can be magical, fall foliage along the St. Lawrence in late September and early October is genuinely world-class, and a campervan rental in Alexandria Bay is perfect for chasing it. Most state park campgrounds close by mid-October, but Wellesley Island stays open later than most, and private parks like Association Island offer extended seasons. For cold-weather trips, filter for RVs with heated holding tanks, a furnace, and shore power capability, and ask your host about winterization. Daytime temps in October average 55 degrees, dipping to the 30s overnight, so pack layers and enjoy quiet trails, empty marinas, and cozy campfires.
