Campgrounds near Black River, New York
Black River sits in Jefferson County in New York's North Country, a short drive from Watertown and roughly half an hour from the St. Lawrence River and the Thousand Islands region. RV travelers use it as a practical staging point: Interstate 81 runs nearby, Lake Ontario is west, and the international border with Canada is within an hour's drive.
The surrounding area mixes private RV parks with state-run campgrounds. Closer-in options include Sportsmans Hideaway RV Park and the Natural Bridge / Watertown KOA Journey, while 1000 Islands Campground and Swan Bay Resort and Marina put travelers on or near the St. Lawrence River. Grass Point State Park, on the American Channel of the St. Lawrence, offers a state-park alternative with a beach, boat launch, marina, and shaded sites.
Expect a humid continental climate with strong seasonal contrasts, meaning camping is concentrated in the warmer half of the year and most nearby campgrounds operate on a May-through-October window.
Things to do near Black River
Water is the main draw. The St. Lawrence River is known for smallmouth and largemouth bass, along with muskie, pike, perch, and panfish, and a New York fishing license is required for the state's waters. Boat launches, marinas, and rentals are available at Grass Point State Park and Swan Bay Resort and Marina, and 1000 Islands Campground gives paddlers straightforward river access.
Day trips add variety. Alexandria Bay is the jumping-off point for Boldt Castle on Heart Island, open seasonally from mid-May through mid-October, plus narrated boat cruises through the archipelago and stops at nearby Rock Island Lighthouse. The paved Black River Trail, converted from an old rail bed, offers walking and biking close to town.

When to camp near Black River
- spring
March - May
54° / 34°F 80 mmParks reopen in May; cool nights, muddy shoulder season.
- summer
June - August
77° / 55°F 95 mmPeak season; waterfront sites fill weeks out.
- fall
September - November
57° / 37°F 95 mmCool, wet stretch; most parks close by late October.
- winter
December - February
32° / 12°F 70 mmHeavy lake-effect snow; nearly all campgrounds closed.
The camping season is short and clearly defined. Most campgrounds in the region operate from May through October, and winter conditions typically make sites inaccessible from November through April due to snow and freezing temperatures. Swan Bay Resort and Marina extends the shoulder on both ends, welcoming guests from April 1 through November 30.
July and August are peak months. Warm days, active marinas, and school-break traffic push waterfront sites to fill early, especially on weekends and around holidays. Late spring and early fall are quieter, with cooler nights and fewer bugs; fall in particular brings lower demand at private parks and cool, breezy days on the river.
Winter is a lake-effect snow zone. Watertown sits in the eastern Lake Ontario snowbelt with heavy seasonal snowfall, and Black River lies in the same corridor, so trip planning outside the May to October window is limited to a handful of extended-season resorts and day-use only state park access.
How to book a campsite
New York state parks, including Grass Point State Park, are booked through ReserveAmerica online or by calling 1-800-456-2267. Sites can be reserved up to nine months in advance, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival. Walk-ins are permitted for campsites when space is open.
Private parks each use their own systems. Swan Bay Resort and Marina, Sportsmans Hideaway RV Park, and 1000 Islands Campground take reservations directly through their websites or by phone, and the Natural Bridge / Watertown KOA Journey books through KOA's site or call center. For summer weekends, booking eight or more weeks ahead is standard, and waterfront sites often go first.
What to expect on site
Terrain around Black River is generally flat, with a mix of open riverfront and wooded lots. State-run sites tend toward simpler setups: Grass Point State Park has 20 electric sites at 20-amp service, no individual water or sewer hookups, showers, and a dump station, with check-in at 3 p.m. and check-out at 11 a.m.
Private parks lean full-service. Swan Bay Resort and Marina offers oversized full-hookup sites on concrete pads with 20/30/50-amp service, village water and sewer, Wi-Fi, and big-rig-friendly layouts, plus laundry, two heated pools, a tiki bar, and a marina. The Natural Bridge / Watertown KOA Journey provides typical KOA amenities including full hookups, cabins, and family facilities.
Bring layers even in summer: nights near the water cool quickly, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. A maximum of two pets per site is standard at New York state parks, on a leash no longer than six feet.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Black River, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Black River, NY?
RV rental in Black River, NY is generally more affordable than in major metros. In the Watertown and Jefferson County area, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $295 per night, and larger Class A rigs sit at the higher end. Late June through August and the early October foliage peak are the priciest weeks, so for a cheaper RV rental in Black River, aim for late May, early June, or mid-September when rates ease. Pro tip: bundle a weekday pickup with a longer stay, since many hosts on RVezy offer weekly discounts that can shave 10 to 20 percent off your total.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Black%20River%2C%20New%20YorkDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Black River, NY?
A standard New York State driver's license (or any valid US or Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in Black River. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or RV endorsement is required for any of the rigs on RVezy, whether you pick up a nimble Class B campervan or a roomy 30-foot Class C motorhome. Approved drivers must generally be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID inside the booking flow, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from overseas? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the process is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Black River protected if something goes wrong?
Peace of mind is built into every RVezy booking. Your motorhome rental in Black River automatically includes a renter protection plan that covers most damage to the vehicle, plus 24/7 roadside assistance you can call from anywhere along the Black River Trail or up in the Thousand Islands. During checkout, you choose the protection tier that best fits your comfort level, with higher tiers reducing your out-of-pocket responsibility if something happens. Coverage is set by RVezy rather than the host, so you get consistent protection on any listing you book. Focus on the rapids and waterfalls; RVezy has the backup covered.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Black River RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so you have breathing room if plans shift. Beyond that window, the refund amount depends on how far out your trip is and the listing's cancellation tier. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so you are never left without options, which matters in a region that sometimes sees surprise lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario. Because policies are handled centrally by RVezy, you get the same fair, consistent treatment on any RV rental in Black River you choose.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Black River, NY?
Yes, plenty of furry co-pilots head out on the Black River with their humans. To find a pet-friendly RV rental Black River trip on RVezy, simply tick the Pet-Friendly filter when you search, and you'll see every listing whose owner welcomes pets (some charge a small cleaning fee, which is shown upfront). Once you're rolling, your pup will love Whetstone Gulf State Park in nearby Lowville, which permits leashed dogs on its rim trails, and the riverfront walking paths in the Village of Black River itself. Thompson Park in Watertown also has dog-friendly green space just 10 minutes from the village. Pack a tie-out, a collapsible water bowl, and proof of rabies vaccination in case a campground asks.
parks.ny.gov/parks/whetstonegulfCan the RV be delivered to my campground or address in Black River?
Yes, RV delivery in Black River is one of the easiest ways to skip the learning curve, especially if it is your first time renting an RV. Many hosts in the Watertown and Fort Drum area will tow or drive the rig straight to your campsite at Black River Bay Campground, Kring Point State Park, or even your driveway, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every switch and valve. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy and enter your destination to see exact delivery fees, which are typically based on round-trip mileage from the host. Pro tip: book delivery to a campground in the Thousand Islands region so you can park the car and just relax for the week.
parks.ny.gov/parks/61How far can I drive on an RV rental from Black River?
You've got serious range from Black River, NY, and mileage is straightforward on RVezy. Each host sets a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day) with a per-mile fee beyond that, and some listings offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for a bigger loop. From Black River you can reach Alexandria Bay in about 45 minutes (35 miles), Old Forge in the Adirondacks in around 90 minutes (70 miles), Niagara Falls in roughly 4 hours (215 miles), and the Vermont border via the Lake Champlain ferries in about 3.5 hours. Sort listings by mileage policy on the search page to match the rig to your route.
dot.ny.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Black River, NY?
The best campgrounds near Black River, NY put you minutes from rivers, lakes, and trails. Black River Bay Campground in Dexter sits right on Lake Ontario and offers full hookups plus a sandy beach. Kring Point State Park, about 40 minutes north on the St. Lawrence River, has waterfront sites with stunning Thousand Islands sunsets. Wescott Beach State Park in Sackets Harbor (35 minutes west) features beachfront RV sites with electric hookups. For an Adirondack feel, Whetstone Gulf State Park in Lowville is 30 minutes south and has a dramatic 3-mile gorge. Pro tip: state park sites typically include 30-amp electric but no sewer, so plan a dump-station stop on your way home.
parks.ny.gov/camping/When is the best time of year for an RV trip in Black River, NY?
Late May through early October is your sweet spot for RV camping Black River. June brings highs around 75°F with whitewater rafting at peak flow, July and August hit 80 to 85°F (perfect for swimming in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence), and late September through the first week of October delivers spectacular Adirondack and Tug Hill foliage with crisp 60°F days. Winters here are no joke (Black River sits in one of the snowiest corridors in the eastern US thanks to lake-effect off Lake Ontario), so most campgrounds close from mid-October through April. Local insider tip: aim for the third week of September, when leaves start turning, mosquitoes are gone, and rates ease before the fall color rush.
weather.gov/buf/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay starting from Black River?
You're going to do great, and Black River is honestly one of the friendlier launch points in New York for first-time renters. The village sits on flat terrain along NY Route 3 with wide shoulders, and you're a quick 10-minute hop from Interstate 81 if you want long straight stretches to get comfortable. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering the slide-outs, leveling, propane, the awning, and the dump valves, and they're a text away during your whole trip. Start with a smaller Class C or travel trailer if you're nervous, and consider booking delivery so your first drive is just to the gas station. Most renters tell us the nerves are gone within the first 20 miles.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/2023%20NYSDOT%20Driver%27s%20Manual.pdfWhat if my RV breaks down during my Black River trip?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so one phone call gets you a tow, tire change, jump start, fuel drop, or lockout help anywhere in upstate New York, whether you are in downtown Watertown or deep on a Tug Hill backroad. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app to help troubleshoot smaller stuff like a tripped breaker or a finicky water pump, and RVezy customer support is on standby too. Pro tip: snap a photo of your RV's make, model, and license plate at pickup so you can share it instantly if you ever need service.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Black River RV rental into Canada or other states?
Cross-border travel is often on the table, since Black River sits less than an hour from the Thousand Islands Bridge crossing at Alexandria Bay into Ontario. Many RVezy hosts in the region allow trips into Canada, and a smaller number allow it into other US states like Vermont or Pennsylvania, but you must confirm by messaging the host directly from the listing before you book so the insurance and protection coverage extends properly. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Bring a passport or enhanced driver's license for border crossings, plus a signed permission letter from your host. Popular cross-border routes from Black River include Kingston, Ottawa (about 2.5 hours), and the Prince Edward County wine region.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat should I budget for fuel on a Black River RV road trip?
Fuel is manageable here, and an RV road trip from Black River usually stretches your dollar further than driving from a big city. Expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG on a Class A, 10 to 14 MPG on a Class C, 16 to 20 MPG on a Class B campervan, and 12 to 16 MPG when towing a travel trailer. Jefferson County gas prices typically run a bit below the New York State average since you are outside the NYC metro. For a 4-night, 400-mile loop through the Thousand Islands and Adirondacks in a Class C, budget roughly $130 to $170 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Watertown or Carthage rather than at the smaller villages, where pumps can run higher.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground near Black River?
Book early and you'll have your pick. New York State Parks like Wescott Beach, Whetstone Gulf, and Kring Point use the ReserveAmerica system and open reservations 9 months in advance, and the prime July/August waterfront sites along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence get snapped up within hours of that window opening. For private parks like Black River Bay Campground in Dexter, aim for 2 to 4 months ahead for summer weekends. Shoulder season (June and September) is much more relaxed, often just 2 to 3 weeks ahead. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, target Sunday through Thursday arrivals, when even peak-summer sites at Thousand Islands parks often have last-minute openings.
parks.ny.gov/reservations/What are driving conditions like around Black River, NY?
Driving here is straightforward most of the year. Interstate 81 runs north-south through nearby Watertown, NY Route 3 connects Black River east and west, and roads are generally wide, well-maintained, and lightly trafficked outside Fort Drum shift-change times (around 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.). This corner of New York is famous for lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario from November through April, with occasional whiteout squalls along the Tug Hill plateau, so most RV trips here run May to October. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk on rural stretches, especially along Route 12 and Route 26. The Adirondack foothills to the east have some climbing grades but nothing that troubles a typical motorhome.
511ny.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Black River?
You'll find a great mix. Private campgrounds like Black River Bay Campground in Dexter and Association Island RV Resort in Henderson Harbor offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), wifi, laundry, showers, camp stores, and pools or beaches. New York State Parks such as Wescott Beach, Kring Point, and Whetstone Gulf provide electric and water hookups at most sites plus a central dump station, but no sewer at the pad and typically no wifi. Free potable water fills are easy to find at the dump stations, and propane refills are available at Watertown TrueValue and several stations along Route 11. Pro tip: top off your fresh water in Watertown before heading deeper into the Adirondacks, where fill stations get sparse.
parks.ny.gov/parks/wescottbeach/details.aspxWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Black River?
You are getting a home on wheels. Most RVezy rentals in the Black River area come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or sofa for extra sleepers, a full kitchen (fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, cookware, dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (furnace plus roof air conditioning), and seatbelted seating for travel. Class C and Class A motorhomes typically add a generator for off-grid power, a flat-screen TV, and often an outdoor speaker for riverside evenings. Campervans (Class B) trade size for nimbleness and great fuel economy. Wifi availability varies, so if you need to work remotely along the Black River, bring a hotspot or filter listings by wifi before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Black%20River%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in the Black River area offer a menu of helpful add-ons that make life easier: kitchen kits, linens and towels, camp chairs and tables, generators, bike racks, kayaks (great for paddling the calm middle Black River), and of course delivery and setup. Each add-on shows its fee right on the listing, so there are no surprises. Pickup is usually at the host's home or a nearby meeting point in Watertown, Carthage, or the Village of Black River, and a typical walkthrough takes 30 to 45 minutes. Mileage policies range from around 100 free miles per day up to unlimited mileage. Pro tip: ask your host for local campsite recommendations, since most are seasoned campers who know every great spot in Jefferson County.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Black%20River%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Black River, NY, you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card (never directly to the host), which keeps your money protected. A refundable security deposit is collected separately from your booking payment and held before pickup, typically ranging from $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig's value, and it is released back to you after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any hiccups, do a quick walkaround video at pickup and drop-off, return the rig with the same fuel and propane levels you started with, and follow the host's cleaning and dump-tank instructions.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre RVs available in Black River during winter months?
Yes, a handful of hardy hosts keep listings open through the snowy season, and a winter RV adventure in Jefferson County is genuinely special, think frozen Lake Ontario shorelines, snowmobiling on the Tug Hill (one of the snowiest places east of the Rockies, with 200+ inches annually), and ice fishing on Black River Bay. If you're booking November through March, look for RVs with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, a propane furnace, and the ability to run on shore power at a winter-open park. Few campgrounds stay open year-round here, so many winter renters park at private properties or seasonal sites with electric hookups. Message hosts to confirm winter readiness, and pack extra propane tanks since you'll burn through them fast.
