Campgrounds near Dunkirk, New York
Dunkirk sits on the southern shore of Lake Erie in Chautauqua County and is the westernmost city in New York State. RV travelers use it as a base for lakefront camping, Chautauqua Lake day trips, and the wineries of the Lake Erie Grape Belt. Most campgrounds within a short drive combine lake access with wooded, family-oriented loops.
Lake Erie State Park sits less than ten miles west of Dunkirk on high bluffs above the lake and is the closest state-run campground, with 99 campsites and 10 cabins spread across electric and non-electric loops. Evangola State Park lies to the northeast in southern Erie County and adds a natural sand beach, yurts, a cabin, and a nature center. Chautauqua Lake KOA Holiday provides a full-service private option inland toward Chautauqua Lake.
Smaller private campgrounds round out the area. Firemans Fraternity Campground and Blue Water Beach Campground both sit close to the Lake Erie shoreline and offer shorter drives from downtown Dunkirk when state park loops are booked out.
Things to do near Dunkirk
Lake Erie itself drives most trip planning. Anglers target smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye, and yellow perch, and the Dunkirk Lighthouse at Point Gratiot is a short drive from most campgrounds. Evangola State Park has the closest natural sand swimming beach with lifeguards during summer hours, while Lake Erie State Park focuses more on bluff-top views and a rocky shoreline.
On-site activities vary by campground. Lake Erie State Park features an 18-hole disc golf course, playgrounds, volleyball courts, a baseball field, and horseshoe pits, while Evangola offers a beach, nature trails, pavilions, playing fields, tennis courts, and a nature center. Families often build a day around the beach at Evangola, then drive the Chautauqua Wine Trail or visit the Chautauqua Institution grounds inland.

The camping season around Dunkirk is short and tied to the state park calendar. Lake Erie State Park operates roughly mid-May through mid-October, and Evangola State Park runs from mid-May to Columbus Day. Private campgrounds in the area follow a similar window, with a few opening earlier in spring.
Summer weekends are the busiest period. Peak season at the state parks runs from the end of June through the end of August, and cabins require a two-night minimum stay outside of peak season. Weekend sites at both state parks fill well in advance for July and August, especially the electric and lakefront loops. Weekdays and shoulder weeks in late May, early June, and September are noticeably easier to book.
Winter closes the campgrounds, but the parks stay open for day use. Winter visitors to Evangola enjoy snowmobiling and cross-country skiing, and Lake Erie State Park opens its hiking trails to cross-country skiers. Lake-effect snow off Lake Erie can drop heavy accumulations from November through February.
How to book campgrounds near Dunkirk
New York State Parks manage the two closest state campgrounds through ReserveAmerica. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites, bookings can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance, so summer weekends should be locked in as early as possible.
Standard campsites carry a two-night minimum, though one-night stays are available online if booked within a few days of arrival. A camping party and their equipment may occupy a site for a maximum of 14 continuous nights. Private campgrounds such as Chautauqua Lake KOA Holiday, Firemans Fraternity Campground, and Blue Water Beach Campground book directly through their own websites or by phone.
What to expect on site
Expect classic Great Lakes state park infrastructure rather than resort-style hookups. Lake Erie State Park offers 81 electric sites ranging from 15 to 50 amps, with one non-electric loop, plus 10 cabins. Evangola has 80 campsites, 6 yurts, and one cabin, with electric-only sites, potable water spigots throughout the campground, and dump stations at the entrance and inside the loop. Both parks have showers and flush toilets.
Site spacing at the state parks is generally decent but open. Sites are a good size yet offer limited privacy, and many campsites lack heavy shade. Cell service is reliable in most loops.
Current proof of rabies inoculation is required at check-in for pets, and metal tags will not be accepted. Check-in at Lake Erie State Park is 3 p.m. and check-out is 11 a.m.

parks.ny.gov/parks/129When is the best time of year for RV camping in Dunkirk?

May and late September are wonderful shoulder months: cooler nights (40s-50s°F), fewer bugs, and lower campsite prices, plus fall brings the famous Concord grape harvest along the Lake Erie Wine Trail. Winter is genuinely cold here with significant lake-effect snow, so most campgrounds (including Lake Erie State Park) close from mid-October to mid-May. Pro tip: target the last week of September for warm days, vineyard color, and your pick of lakefront sites.

Pro tip: book a Class C motorhome or campervan for your first trip, since they drive much like a large van, and plan a short shakedown loop to Point Gratiot Park before heading further.

The city sits right on I-90 (the New York State Thruway) at Exit 59, with flat-to-rolling terrain, lightly trafficked rural routes, and the scenic Route 5 and Route 20 corridors hugging Lake Erie. The main thing to know is lake-effect weather: from November through March, sudden heavy snow squalls can roll off Lake Erie and reduce visibility quickly, while summer thunderstorms can briefly kick up gusty crosswinds along the shoreline. Watch for the 13-foot 6-inch standard NY bridge clearance and avoid older village underpasses if you're in a tall Class A. Pro tip: check 511NY before you roll out for live road and weather conditions across the region.

Here's the move locals love: time your Dunkirk RV trip to catch a Tuesday evening 'Music on the Pier' concert at City Pier Park, then drive 1.5 miles to climb the 1875 Dunkirk Lighthouse at Point Gratiot for a 27-mile view across Lake Erie at sunset, before settling in at Lake Erie State Park's bluff-top campsites for the night. The next morning, cruise Route 20 west into the heart of Lake Erie Wine Country, where 20+ wineries between Silver Creek, NY and Harborcreek, PA pour everything from dry rieslings to Concord grape slushies. Pro tip: stop at the Grape Discovery Center in Westfield for tastings and the story behind America's Grape Country, then head back to your rig for a lakeside campfire.
