Campgrounds near Elizabethtown, New York
Elizabethtown sits in the eastern Adirondack foothills of New York, just off I-87 (the Adirondack Northway) at Exit 31. The area serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading into the High Peaks region, with Lake Champlain, the Green Mountains, and Vermont's western shore all within an hour's drive.
Camping options split between New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) campgrounds inside the Adirondack Park, private parks along the valley corridor, and Vermont state parks across Lake Champlain. Lincoln Pond Campground is reached from Adirondack Northway (I-87), Exit 31 west to Elizabethtown, then left on County Route 7, about 6 miles. Private options like Magic Pines Family Campground and Barber Homestead Park round out the immediate area.
Across the lake, Button Bay is a 253-acre park located on a bluff in Ferrisburgh along the 130-mile long Lake Champlain, and D.A.R. State Park is a 95-acre state park in Addison, Vermont, on the shore of Lake Champlain, located on Vermont Route 17. Both are reachable via the Lake Champlain Bridge at Crown Point.
Things to do near Elizabethtown
The region centers on water and mountains. Giant Mountain Wilderness, High Peaks Wilderness Complex, and Hammond Pond Wild Forest are all within a short drive of the campground and offer a number of hiking opportunities. Trailheads for classic Adirondack peaks lie west of town along Route 9N and Route 73.
On the water, Lincoln Pond supports paddling and fishing close to camp. Motor boats, rowboats, and canoes are allowed, with rowboat, kayak, canoe and stand up paddleboard rentals available. A car-top boat launch is available. Fishing for tiger muskie, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, and bullhead is plentiful.
On the Vermont side, Button Bay State Park is on the Lake Champlain Bikeway, a 363-mile bike route around Lake Champlain and Richelieu River in Quebec. The primary route is mostly paved, and the section around Button Bay State Park is especially suited to family riding. Chimney Point and Crown Point state historic sites are close by for a rainy-day option.

The main camping window runs from Memorial Day weekend through mid-October. Button Bay welcomes campers from Memorial Day Weekend through mid-October, with summer being the most popular time to visit. D.A.R. State Park operates from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. DEC campgrounds inside the Adirondack Park generally open in mid-May and close in mid-October, with some sites operating on shorter shoulder seasons.
July and August draw the heaviest bookings. Lakefront sites at Button Bay and D.A.R., plus waterfront sites at Lincoln Pond, tend to disappear first. From July 1st through Labor Day, only 14 cumulative nights of camping will be permitted at any DEC campground, so plan multi-park itineraries accordingly.
Early fall brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and Adirondack foliage that typically peaks late September into early October. Winter camping is not offered at the parks listed here; roads within the campgrounds close after the season ends.
How to book campsites near Elizabethtown
New York State Parks and DEC campgrounds share one reservation system. Same-day reservations are allowed until 5pm on day of arrival at all DEC campgrounds. Reservations can be made online or through the Reserve America Call Center: 1-800-456-2267. Walk-ins are not permitted. Reservations at Lincoln Pond can be made up to 9 months in advance.
Vermont state parks use a separate portal. Camping reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance on a rolling basis. Reservations made more than 7 days in advance require a two-night minimum. One-night stays are allowed within 7 days of arrival, any day of the week.
Private parks such as Magic Pines Family Campground and Barber Homestead Park book directly through their own websites or by phone. For holiday weekends, reserve as soon as the booking window opens.
What to expect at Elizabethtown campgrounds
Expect a mix of rustic DEC sites and more developed state and private parks. Lincoln Pond offers a variety of campsites. Some are in remote areas and do not offer flush toilets or portable water without going back to the main part of the campground. Three sites are boat access only. Other sites are more developed, with hot showers, a trailer dump station, a recycling area, and disabled accessibility. There are no hookups.
Vermont's lakeside parks are similar in style. Button Bay offers 4 rental cabins, 53 campsites, 13 lean-to's, restrooms with flush toilets, hot and cold running water and coin-operated showers, and a boat launch. Drinking water is available throughout the park. There is an RV sanitary station but there are no hookups. D.A.R. runs the same setup: 47 tent/RV sites, 24 lean-to's, restrooms with flush toilets, hot and cold running water and coin-operated showers, plus a dump station and no hookups.
Bring your own drinking water containers, coins for showers, and be aware of firewood rules. Both New York and Vermont restrict the movement of untreated firewood across state lines to protect forests from invasive pests.

To find a cheap RV rental in Elizabethtown, book mid-week (Sunday through Thursday), travel in late September for fall foliage at off-peak rates, or look for hosts offering weekly discounts. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elizabethtown,%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Elizabethtown, NY?
Your standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Elizabethtown. New York does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement for the motorhomes and trailers available on RVezy, whether a compact campervan or a 32-foot Class C. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association along with your home license, and you're ready for your Adirondacks adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance included when I rent an RV in Elizabethtown?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Elizabethtown includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive the Northway with confidence. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host) so you can match coverage to your budget. Review the included coverage details before finalizing your booking to understand exactly what's protected, what your responsibility looks like, and how to reach support if something unexpected happens on a winding Adirondack road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Elizabethtown trip plans change?
Booking an RV rental in Elizabethtown is low-risk because RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy across the platform. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, plus structured refund tiers based on how far in advance you cancel, and additional flexibility for qualifying situations. You will see the full cancellation details on the checkout page before you pay. Book early to lock in your dates and rig, knowing the policy gives you a clear path if plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Elizabethtown?
Yes, the Adirondacks are a dog lover's paradise and a pet-friendly RV rental in Elizabethtown is easy to find on RVezy. Use the Pet-Friendly filter when browsing listings and message the host to confirm any pet fees or rules. On the trail, your dog will enjoy the paths around Cobble Hill in Elizabethtown, Lincoln Pond Campground (leashed dogs welcome with proof of current rabies vaccination), and the Lake Champlain shoreline about 20 minutes east. Pack a towel by the door, because muddy paws are likely after a Pleasant Valley hike.
dec.ny.gov/places/lincoln-pond-campgroundCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Elizabethtown?
Yes, RV delivery in Elizabethtown is a popular option on RVezy, and it's especially helpful if you're new to RVing or flying into Burlington or Albany. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to your campground, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Popular delivery destinations include Lincoln Pond Campground, Paradox Lake Campground, and Wilmington Notch Campground. Filter by Delivery on RVezy, and ask the host about return pickup so you can leave the keys at your site and head straight to the airport.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elizabethtown,%20New%20YorkHow many miles can I drive on an Elizabethtown RV rental?
You'll have plenty of road to explore. Each host on RVezy sets their own mileage policy, and many Elizabethtown listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles available at a small per-mile rate (often around $0.30 to $0.50). Some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a longer Adirondacks loop. For reference, Lake Placid is about 30 miles away, Burlington VT is roughly 39 miles via the Charlotte ferry, Lake George is 70 miles south, and Montreal sits about 130 miles north. Estimate your route before booking and message the host to discuss a mileage package that fits your plans.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106394-How-to-pay-for-your-bookingWhere are the best campgrounds near Elizabethtown, NY?
You have great choices for RV camping in Elizabethtown. Lincoln Pond Campground, about 6 miles south, offers wooded sites, a swim beach, and a boat launch operated by the NY DEC. Paradox Lake Campground (about 25 minutes south) has lakefront sites and good fishing. Wilmington Notch Campground sits along the Ausable River close to Whiteface. For an Olympic-region vibe, the Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA in Wilmington offers full hookups. DEC campgrounds book through ReserveAmerica, and the best lakefront sites for July and August tend to disappear quickly after release, so set a reminder.
dec.ny.gov/places/lincoln-pond-campgroundWhen is the best time of year for an Elizabethtown RV trip?
Late June through mid-October is the sweet spot for an Elizabethtown RV trip. July and August bring warm days (typically in the mid-to-upper 70s F) and cool sleeping weather in the 50s, ideal for High Peaks hiking. Late September into early October is prime fall foliage season, when the maples and birches around Pleasant Valley turn red, orange, and gold. Spring (May to early June) is quieter and greener, though some DEC campgrounds open in mid-May. Winter is possible with cold-weather rigs for snow lovers heading to Whiteface. Book a late-September trip for fewer bugs, lower rates, and stunning scenic drives.
weather.gov/btv/I'm a first-time renter. Will I be able to handle an RV in the Adirondacks?
You can absolutely do this, and the Adirondacks are a great place to learn. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, the waste system, and propane. If you're nervous about mountain roads, start with a smaller Class C or campervan rental in Elizabethtown, choose delivery to skip the highway entirely, and stick to Route 9N and the Adirondack Northway (I-87), which are well-maintained and gently graded. Many first-time renters book two nights at Lincoln Pond, just 6 miles away, as a confidence-building shakedown before exploring further.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my Elizabethtown RV rental?
You're never alone on the road. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering situations like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing if needed, which is reassuring on quieter stretches like Route 9N between Elizabethtown and Keene. Cell service can be spotty deep in the Adirondack Park, so save the roadside number to your phone before you leave town. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app for rig-specific questions, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Elizabethtown RV rental into Canada or Vermont?
A Vermont side trip is very doable, and Canada is often possible too. Elizabethtown sits about 39 miles from Burlington VT (via the Essex-Charlotte ferry across Lake Champlain) and roughly 130 miles from Montreal. Crossing state lines into Vermont is generally fine, and many hosts allow cross-border travel to Canada, but always ask the host before booking so they can confirm coverage and provide written authorization for the border officer. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Bring your passport, vehicle registration, and the host's authorization letter, and check CBP wait times at the Champlain port of entry before heading north.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV road trip from Elizabethtown?
Fuel is the biggest variable on any Adirondacks RV trip, so plan ahead. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A or large travel-trailer setups land around 7 to 10 MPG. Gas in Essex County usually runs slightly above the New York state average, with more competitive pumps in Elizabethtown along Route 9 and in Westport. For a 4-night loop from Elizabethtown to Lake Placid, Tupper Lake, and back (about 200 miles), budget roughly $100 to $180 in fuel for a Class C. Top up in Plattsburgh or Ticonderoga before heading deep into the park, where stations are sparse.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Elizabethtown?
For summer weekends, the earlier the better. New York State DEC campgrounds like Lincoln Pond, Paradox Lake, and Wilmington Notch open reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and prime lakefront sites for July and August often sell out within hours of release. For shoulder-season trips in June or September, you can usually grab a great site 4 to 8 weeks out. Private parks like the Lake Placid/Whiteface KOA tend to be more flexible. If your dates are flexible, search Sunday-to-Thursday arrivals, when even sold-out campgrounds often have last-minute openings.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Elizabethtown?
Driving in and around Elizabethtown is RV-friendly, with one caveat: respect the mountains. The Adirondack Northway (I-87) and Route 9N have wide lanes, gentle grades, and beautiful scenery, making them comfortable for first-timers. Smaller backroads like Route 9 over Spruce Hill or the climb toward Keene Valley involve steeper grades, so shift to a lower gear on descents to save your brakes. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk year-round, and check 511NY before driving from November through April when snow and black ice are common. Stick to I-87 when possible for the easiest route.
511ny.org/What hookups and amenities will I find at Elizabethtown-area campgrounds?
You'll find a healthy mix. Private parks like the Lake Placid/Whiteface KOA offer full hookups (30/50-amp electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and dump stations. New York State DEC campgrounds like Lincoln Pond and Wilmington Notch are more rustic with no individual hookups, but they provide hot showers, potable water spigots, and a centralized dump station for a small fee. If you're staying at a DEC site, ask your RVezy host about extra battery capacity or a quiet inverter generator (DEC limits generator use to specific hours), so you can stretch off-grid stays comfortably.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/campingWhat amenities come standard in an Elizabethtown RV rental?
More than you might expect. Most motorhome rentals in Elizabethtown include a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds (sleeping 4 to 8 total), a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, and a wet bath with toilet and shower. Roof air conditioning, furnace heat, and seatbelted travel seats are standard. Many hosts also include a generator, outdoor awning, TV, and sometimes a Wi-Fi hotspot, which helps since cell service fades in the High Peaks. Travel trailers offer similar layouts minus the cab. Check each listing's amenities and message the host to confirm specifics like a backup camera or bike rack before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elizabethtown,%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for my Elizabethtown RV rental?
Hosts make it easy to customize your Adirondack adventure. Common add-ons for an RV rental in New York include camp chairs and tables, linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, generators, bike racks, kayaks, fire pits, and propane top-ups. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Elizabethtown, with a 30 to 60 minute orientation included. Many hosts offer delivery within 25 miles for a flat fee, and some will meet you at Burlington International Airport (about 50 miles away via ferry). Bundle add-ons at booking to save versus picking up gear at Lake Placid outfitters.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elizabethtown,%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure, all handled through the RVezy platform (never pay a host directly). You'll pay the rental total at booking with a credit or debit card, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup. Deposit amounts vary by rig and are shown on the listing, and the hold is released after your trip ends, assuming no damage or excessive cleaning. Do a thorough walk-around video at pickup and dropoff with the host present, timestamp it, and you'll have a smooth deposit return for your Elizabethtown RV rental.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Elizabethtown in winter for skiing at Whiteface?
Yes, winter RV camping near Elizabethtown is a real and rewarding experience. Whiteface Mountain is about 30 miles away, and the Lake Placid/Whiteface KOA stays open year-round with plowed sites and full hookups. Look for RVezy listings marked as winter-ready, meaning heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, a strong propane furnace, and shore power compatibility. Temperatures in January and February typically see highs near the mid-20s F with lows in the teens, so plan on running the heat. Ask your host about skirting, an electric tank heater, and a heated water hose, then enjoy a ski week from your campervan rental in Elizabethtown.
