Campgrounds near Fonda, New York
Fonda is a small village in Montgomery County along the Mohawk River, roughly 40 miles northwest of Albany and reached from New York State Thruway Exit 28 at Fonda-Fultonville. The village sits at the southern edge of the town of Mohawk, with the Erie Canal running through this stretch of the river and State Routes 5, 30A, and 334 providing local access. It works well as an RV base for exploring the southern Adirondack foothills, the Mohawk Valley, and points north toward Fulton County lakes.
Campgrounds within roughly a half-hour drive include Pecks Lake Enterprises on Pecks Lake Road in Gloversville, Royal Mountain Campground on Route 29 in Johnstown, Hide-A-Way Campsites in Central Bridge, and Locust Park Campground in Howes Cave. Glampful offers glamping-style accommodations for renters who want a lighter setup.
Most private parks in this region are family-run and lean toward wooded, pond-side, or lakeside settings with a mix of electric and full-hookup RV sites, cabins, and tent areas. State-run camping is available a short drive north in the Adirondack Park, adding DEC-managed options near swimming beaches and hiking trails.
Things to do around Fonda
The Mohawk River and its lock system draw anglers and paddlers, with bass, walleye, and catfish common catches from accessible banks. Pecks Lake, one of the larger lakes in Fulton County, has a full-service marina with boat, motor, and tackle rentals, plus swimming and fishing directly from the campground. Royal Mountain Campground sits at the base of Royal Mountain, which hosts motocross and hill-climb events in summer and skiing in winter.
Day trips fan out in every direction. Howe Caverns and Secret Caverns are close to Hide-A-Way Campsites and Locust Park Campground in Schoharie County. The Saint Kateri Tekakwitha National Shrine sits in Fonda itself, Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame are about an hour southwest, and Herkimer Diamond Mines lie west along the Thruway for family rockhounding.

The private campground season in this part of upstate New York is short. Pecks Lake Enterprises operates May through October, Royal Mountain Campground runs roughly May through mid-October, and Hide-A-Way Campsites opens in early May and closes in mid-October. Winter closures are the norm because of snow depth and freeze conditions in the southern Adirondacks and Mohawk Valley.
Summer is peak season. July and August bring the warmest weather, the busiest lake activity, and the largest crowds at Cooperstown-adjacent parks, so RV renters headed to youth-baseball weeks or the Fonda Fair in August should book well in advance. Late spring and early fall are quieter, with cool nights and typically pleasant days.
At state-run DEC campgrounds nearby, such as Caroga Lake, reservations are handled through ReserveAmerica and can be made up to nine months in advance. Same-day bookings are now accepted until 5 p.m. on the day of arrival, though popular sites fill months out for holiday weekends.

How to book campgrounds near Fonda
Private campgrounds around Fonda are booked directly with the operator. Pecks Lake Enterprises, Royal Mountain Campground, and Hide-A-Way Campsites all take reservations by phone through their offices, and Hide-A-Way opens its season on a set date each spring with reservations accepted ahead of time. Some listings also appear on third-party platforms such as Hipcamp and Roverpass.
New York State-run campgrounds in the Adirondack Park, including Caroga Lake north of Fonda, are booked through the ReserveAmerica New York State system or by phone at 1-800-456-CAMP. Reservations can be made up to nine months out, with same-day bookings accepted until 5 p.m. For holiday weekends and July through Labor Day, book as early as possible, since sites in this region fill quickly.
What to expect on the ground
Expect small, owner-operated parks rather than large resort chains. Sites are typically wooded or set around a pond or lake, with electric and water hookups common and full sewer service more limited. Royal Mountain Campground, for example, offers electric and water at sites and a central dump station rather than sewer at every site, and can accommodate rigs up to 60 feet.
Cell coverage along the Mohawk Valley is generally reliable, but signal drops off in the foothills north and west of Fonda. Some Mohawk River sites are close to active rail lines, so light sleepers should ask about train noise at check-in. Wildlife is common at night; food should be stored inside the RV.
At DEC campgrounds, check-in runs from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., and campers must register by 9 p.m. on the first night or risk losing the site. Untreated firewood cannot be moved more than 50 miles to the site.
