Campgrounds near Johnstown, New York
Johnstown sits in Fulton County at the southern edge of Adirondack Park, roughly 45 miles northwest of Albany in the Mohawk Valley foothills. The area works well as an RV base: it puts travelers within a short drive of Great Sacandaga Lake, the Fulton County lake district, and the six-million-acre Adirondack Park to the north, while keeping grocery stores, fuel, and services close in the Glove Cities corridor of Johnstown and Gloversville.
Private campgrounds dominate the immediate area. Pecks Lake Enterprises and Royal Mountain Campground sit just outside town with hookup sites and lake or pond access. Pine Lake Campground and RV Park and Southern Adirondack Pines Campground and Cabins offer lakefront sites and cabin options for mixed groups, and Glampful adds a furnished glamping alternative for renters who want less setup.
Drive times to public land are short. The southern Adirondack trailheads, Caroga Lake, and state boat launches on Great Sacandaga are all within roughly 30 minutes, which makes Johnstown a practical launching point rather than a destination in itself.
Things to do near Johnstown
Water recreation drives the summer calendar. Great Sacandaga Lake, about 15 miles from town, has public boat launches and is used heavily for kayaking, powerboating, and warm-water fishing. Fulton County lakes, including Peck Lake and Caroga Lake, are smaller and quieter, with rental boats available at some private campgrounds.
On land, the southern Adirondack foothills provide hiking terrain without the crowds of the High Peaks. Royal Mountain, off Route 10 in Caroga Lake, runs motocross, hill-climb, and ATV events through the warmer months in addition to winter skiing.
For a rain-day plan, Johnson Hall State Historic Site preserves Sir William Johnson's colonial-era home in Johnstown, and Adirondack Animal Land in nearby Gloversville is a straightforward stop for families with younger kids.

Most private campgrounds around Johnstown operate on a May-to-October season. DEC campgrounds in the surrounding Adirondack region generally open by mid-May, with the bulk of sites available through Columbus Day weekend.
July and August are the peak booking weeks. Lakefront sites and full-hookup pull-throughs at Pecks Lake Enterprises, Pine Lake Campground and RV Park, and Southern Adirondack Pines Campground and Cabins tend to sell out for weekends well in advance, and the Fulton County lake district draws steady traffic through Labor Day. Early June and the week after Labor Day are quieter alternatives with similar weather.
Fall foliage typically peaks in the southern Adirondacks in early to mid-October and is a strong secondary season, though nighttime lows drop into the 30s Fahrenheit. Winter camping options in the immediate area are limited, since most private parks close by the end of October and reopen the following spring.

How to book a campsite
Reservations at New York State Parks and DEC campgrounds are handled through ReserveAmerica, either online or by phone at 1-800-456-CAMP. Both DEC and NY State Parks allow bookings up to nine months in advance of the arrival date, and popular Adirondack sites often fill as soon as that window opens at 8 a.m. Eastern on weekdays.
Private campgrounds around Johnstown, including Royal Mountain Campground, Pine Lake Campground and RV Park, and Southern Adirondack Pines Campground and Cabins, are booked directly with each property by phone or through their own websites. Glampful lists its rentals on its own site and third-party glamping platforms.
For holiday weekends in July and August, plan to reserve two to three months out. Shoulder-season weekdays in May, June, and September usually have availability closer to the trip date.
What to expect on-site
Private campgrounds in the Johnstown area lean family-oriented rather than resort-style. Expect wooded or lakeside sites, seasonal pools or swim beaches at some parks, laundry, showers, and a mix of 30- and 50-amp hookups. Pecks Lake Enterprises is primarily an electric-and-water park with a dump station on site rather than full sewer at every site, so confirm hookup type when booking.
Cell coverage is generally usable in and near Johnstown but degrades as sites move deeper into the Adirondack foothills. Wi-Fi is offered at most private parks with variable speeds.
Black flies are common in late May and early June, and mosquitoes stay active near lakes through summer. Pack repellent, expect black bears in the wider region, and follow the food-storage guidance posted at each campground.

Time your trip around the Fonda Fair (late August into early September) for a real taste of Mohawk Valley culture.
weather.gov/aly/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Johnstown?
You're going to do great, Johnstown is one of the easier places in the Northeast to learn. Traffic in the Glove Cities (Johnstown and Gloversville) is light, parking lots are roomy, and Route 30A and Route 29 are wide two-lane highways with gentle terrain. Every host on RVezy provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering hookups, slide-outs, the propane system, and tank management, so no one leaves you to figure it out alone. First time renting an RV? Start with a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer in the 22 to 26 foot range. Do a short practice loop in a large, empty lot before pointing north toward the Adirondacks.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never stranded. Every Johnstown RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're in downtown Johnstown or on a remote road near Caroga Lake. The service covers flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. RVezy customer support is also available around the clock to coordinate repairs and communicate with your host. Save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a quick photo of the RV's VIN so any service center can locate parts fast.

Cross-state travel is generally fine, your Johnstown rental is welcome throughout the continental US. Popular RV road trips from Johnstown include Vermont and New Hampshire (2 to 3 hours east), the Finger Lakes (about 2 hours west), and the Maine coast (about 6 hours). Travel to Canada (Montreal is around 200 miles north) may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, so confirm in writing through the RVezy messaging system before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance limitations. If heading to Canada, carry your passport, the host's written permission, and the RV's registration ready at the border.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for my Johnstown RV trip?
Plan smart and fuel won't surprise you. Class B campervans get 16 to 20 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A motorhomes typically run 6 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but expect a 20 to 30 percent MPG drop. New York gas prices typically average in the $3.20 to $3.80 per gallon range, with convenient fill-up spots along North Comrie Avenue and West State Street in Johnstown. For a 4-night, 400-mile loop in a Class C, budget roughly $150 to $200 in fuel. Use GasBuddy to scout cheaper gas and diesel along Route 30A heading toward Amsterdam and the Thruway.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Johnstown?
For summer weekends, book your campground 3 to 6 months ahead, especially for Caroga Lake Campground, which fills up fast for July 4th, Labor Day, and prime foliage weekends in late September. New York State Parks and DEC campgrounds use ReserveAmerica, with reservations opening 9 months in advance. Royal Mountain Campground and other private parks accept reservations directly and are often more flexible 2 to 4 weeks out. Weekday arrivals are easier to snag, and DEC campgrounds often allow same-day reservations if you want a spontaneous trip.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/camping/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Johnstown?
Driving an RV around Johnstown is refreshingly stress-free compared to most Northeast destinations. The Glove Cities have wide streets, low traffic, and easy access to Route 30A connecting south to the New York State Thruway (I-90) at Fonda. Heading north toward the Adirondacks, expect gentle hills, well-maintained two-lane roads, and standard interstate clearances on the Thruway. Winter brings significant snow and icy patches from November through March, so most renters stick to May through October. Use caution on Route 10 north of Caroga Lake in fog or after dark, the road narrows and deer crossings are common around dusk.
511ny.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Johnstown?
Local campgrounds range from rustic to full-service. Caroga Lake Campground (DEC) has hot showers, flush toilets, a trailer dump station, a swim beach, and a boat launch, but does not have individual site hookups, so plan to use your RV's onboard tanks (generator use is restricted to posted quiet-hour windows). Royal Mountain Campground offers water and electric hookups. For full hookups including sewer, look at private parks around Mayfield or Lake George RV Park (about an hour east). The dump station at Caroga Lake is open to the public for a small fee. Bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-amp adapter to fit most regional setups.
dec.ny.gov/places/caroga-lake-campground-and-day-use-areaWhat's inside a typical Johnstown RV rental?
You'll find more comfort than expected in a motorhome rental in Johnstown. Most Class C and Class A rigs sleep 4 to 8 with a queen bed, convertible dinette, and bunk options, plus a full kitchen (fridge, microwave, gas stove, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, roof AC, propane furnace, and an awning. Many include a flat-screen TV and stereo, and a good share of Johnstown listings include onboard generators for boondocking. Built-in Wi-Fi is uncommon and cell service can be spotty deep in the Adirondacks, so a mobile hotspot is helpful. Ask the host about seatbelts, only seated belted positions are legal for passengers while driving, so confirm the count matches your group.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Johnstown%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when booking?
Johnstown hosts offer a generous menu of extras to customize your campervan rental in Johnstown. Common add-ons include linens and bedding packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor rugs ($15 to $30), generators ($15 to $25 per day), bike racks, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with additional miles around $0.30 to $0.45. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Johnstown, Gloversville, or Mayfield, with flexible pickup windows in the early afternoon. Bundle add-ons during booking to lock in pricing, and ask if your host offers a hotspot or Starlink, which is helpful for working remotely from Adirondack campgrounds.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Johnstown%2C%20New%20YorkHow does the security deposit and payment work on RVezy?
Payment on RVezy is straightforward and secure. You pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, never in cash directly to the host, which keeps your booking protected by RVezy's protection plan and support team. A refundable security deposit (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig) is held separately from your booking payment before pickup and released after return, assuming no damage or excessive cleaning. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround video with your host at pickup, document existing scratches, and return the RV with tanks dumped and fuel refilled as agreed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a great first RV road trip itinerary starting from Johnstown?
Here's a crowd-pleasing 5-day RV road trip from Johnstown. Day 1: pick up your rig and head about 20 minutes north to Caroga Lake Campground for swimming and a Kane Mountain Fire Tower hike. Day 2: drive about 45 minutes northeast to Northampton Beach on Great Sacandaga Lake for paddling and fishing. Day 3: continue about 1 hour east to Lake George for the village, steamboat cruises, and Prospect Mountain views. Day 4: detour south to Saratoga Springs (about 45 minutes) for the historic racetrack and mineral springs.
