Camping near Keeseville, New York
Keeseville sits on the AuSable River in Clinton County, on the northeastern edge of the Adirondack Park about five miles from Lake Champlain. The town is best known for AuSable Chasm, a Potsdam sandstone gorge carved by the AuSable River and one of the most dramatic geological features in the northeastern United States. The location gives RV travelers quick access to the chasm, the High Peaks region to the south, and the Champlain Valley to the east.
Campground options cluster within a short drive of the village. AuSable Chasm Campground sits directly across from the chasm entrance, while Au Sable River Campsite occupies a riverside property nearby. Iroquois R V Park and Campground and Magic Pines Family Campground round out the private options, and Macomb Reservation State Park lies just outside the Adirondack Park along the Salmon River, part of the Thousand Islands State Park Region.
Most sites accept larger rigs and offer electric or full hookups, making Keeseville a practical base for a multi-night Adirondack loop or a Lake Champlain trip that includes the ferry to Burlington, Vermont.
Things to do around Keeseville
AuSable Chasm is the anchor attraction. Campground stays across the road often include extended admission and access to guided rafting, tubing, and rock climbing. On-site amenities at AuSable Chasm Campground include swimming, playgrounds, shuffleboard, basketball, volleyball, disc golf, and more than 25 miles of mountain biking and hiking trails reserved for campers.
Macomb Reservation State Park adds a quieter, forested option. Visitors can swim in man-made Davis Pond, use non-motorized boats, and fish in the pond or the Salmon River, and the park has playing fields, a picnic area, a self-guided nature trail, and a hiking trail.
Beyond the campgrounds, Lake Champlain offers boating and beaches, the Adirondack High Peaks and Lake Placid sit less than an hour southwest, and the AuSable River is a well-known trout and salmon fishery.

December - February

The Keeseville camping season is short and clearly defined. AuSable Chasm Campground operates seasonally from late May through mid-October, and Au Sable River Campsite typically opens in mid-spring and closes in early fall. Macomb Reservation State Park runs a shorter window, opening in late May and closing after Labor Day in early September.
Summer is the peak. July and August bring the warmest temperatures, the busiest chasm attractions, and the highest demand for waterfront and hookup sites. Black flies can be heavy in late spring and early summer, particularly in wooded and riverside sites, so bug protection is worth packing.
Early fall is the other strong window. Cooler nights, foliage across the Adirondacks, and the AuSable's salmon and steelhead run bring anglers to the river. Winter shifts the parks to non-camping use, with activities such as ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.
How to book campgrounds near Keeseville
Reservation systems split by ownership. Macomb Reservation State Park is booked through the New York State Parks system, with reservations available online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267; walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. Reservations must be made seven days ahead of arrival and can be made up to eleven months in advance.
Private campgrounds in the area, including AuSable Chasm Campground, Au Sable River Campsite, Iroquois R V Park and Campground, and Magic Pines Family Campground, take direct bookings by phone or through their own websites and third-party platforms such as Campspot.
For July and August visits, book several months out, especially for full-hookup and pull-through sites that fit larger rigs. Weekends near holidays fill first.
What to expect on-site
Sites in the Keeseville area range from primitive tent spots to full-hookup pads for larger rigs. RV sites at AuSable Chasm Campground accommodate rigs up to 60 feet with full hookups, tent sites occupy back corner areas among the trees, and the campground offers 30 and 50-amp service.
Rules and layout are worth checking before arrival. Generators, firearms, fireworks, ATVs, and chainsaws are not permitted at AuSable Chasm Campground. The internal dirt access road can become rutted during wet conditions, and a 5 mph speed limit is enforced.
Cell service is generally usable, Wi-Fi varies by property, and camp stores stock basics including firewood. Expect wooded, sometimes tight sites at both state and private parks, and plan turnarounds accordingly for longer rigs.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Keeseville, NY?

On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $100 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes generally range from $185 to $300 per night, and pop-up campers and smaller trailers can be even more budget-friendly. For a cheap RV rental in Keeseville, book midweek in June or September when nightly rates often dip 15 to 25 percent versus July and August peak season. Pro tip: longer stays of 5 or more nights often unlock weekly discounts directly from the host, so message them through the listing before booking to ask.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Keeseville%2C%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Keeseville?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in New York, even for a larger Class C motorhome or fifth wheel. New York State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special RV endorsement for non-commercial recreational vehicles, so your standard license covers you across the Adirondacks. To book through RVezy you generally need to be 25 or older and complete a quick ID verification on the platform. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license. Your host will walk you through every system at pickup, so first-time renters feel confident before pulling away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV insurance and roadside assistance included with my Keeseville RV rental?
Yes, every RV rental in Keeseville booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built into the price, so you are covered if a tire blows on Route 9N or you need help on the Northway. At checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, with coverage that helps protect against most damages to the RV during your rental. This is separate from a personal auto policy, but it gives real peace of mind so you can focus on hiking Ausable Chasm instead of worrying about what-ifs. You pick your coverage level, so you stay in control of how much protection you want for your Adirondack adventure.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my Keeseville RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets a clear standard cancellation policy that applies to every reservation, not the individual host. The policy includes a grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund, and the refund amount after that depends on how close you are to your trip start date. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook with travel credits. You will see the exact terms during checkout and in your RVezy account, so book your Keeseville RV near Ausable Chasm early knowing flexibility is built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Keeseville RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Keeseville options are plentiful on RVezy, just filter for Pet-Friendly when you search and you'll see hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Once you're here, dogs are welcome at most Adirondack campgrounds including Ausable Chasm Campground and Ausable River Campground, as long as they're leashed (six-foot max at DEC sites) and you bring proof of a current rabies vaccination. The Ausable Chasm Adventure Trail has dog-friendly rim trails, and Lake Champlain shoreline parks have plenty of off-leash-friendly green space. Pack a tie-out, water bowl, and bug spray, black flies show up in late spring and your pup will thank you.
dec.ny.gov/places/state-campgroundsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Keeseville?
Yes, RV delivery Keeseville is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if you've never towed a trailer or navigated a 30-foot motorhome. Many RVezy hosts in the Keeseville and Plattsburgh area will deliver, level, and set up the RV at popular spots like Ausable Chasm Campground, Ausable Point Campground, or even a private driveway, then walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees usually range from $2 to $4 per mile round-trip, and some hosts offer free delivery within 20 miles. Just message the host from the listing page with your dates and destination, and they'll quote you on the spot.
dec.ny.gov/places/adirondack-parkHow far can I travel on a Keeseville RV trip?
You've got incredible range from Keeseville, sitting right between Lake Champlain and the High Peaks. Lake Placid is about 50 miles southwest (roughly 1 hour), Burlington, Vermont is a 25-minute drive plus a scenic Lake Champlain ferry ride from Port Kent, and Montreal sits about 90 miles north (under 2 hours to the border). Looking for a longer RV road trip from Keeseville? Niagara Falls is around 380 miles west, and Acadia National Park in Maine is about 400 miles east. Some RVezy listings offer unlimited mileage, while others include 100 to 150 free miles per day plus a small per-mile fee, so check the listing's mileage policy before booking.
dot.ny.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Keeseville for RVs?
You're spoiled for choice with RV camping Keeseville options. Ausable Chasm Campground (634 NY-373) is the headliner with 147 sites, full hookups, 25 miles of biking trails, and you can literally walk to the chasm. Ausable River Campground on State Hwy 9N offers riverside sites with full hookups and easy I-87 access. Ausable Point Campground, a New York State DEC site on Lake Champlain, has a sandy beach and 123 sites. Macomb Reservation State Park near Schuyler Falls is a quieter option about 20 minutes away. Book DEC sites through ReserveAmerica up to nine months ahead, waterfront sites disappear within minutes of release.
dec.ny.gov/places/state-campgroundsWhen is the best time of year to visit Keeseville in an RV?
Late June through mid-October is prime time for a Keeseville RV trip, with July and August offering warm days in the 75 to 82 degree range and cool Adirondack nights around 55 degrees, perfect for campfires. September is the local insider's pick: fewer crowds, fewer black flies, and the maple and birch foliage around Whiteface Mountain peaks roughly the last week of September into early October. Spring (May to early June) brings mud season and aggressive black flies, so come prepared with bug nets. Most area campgrounds close mid-October, so book your fall foliage RV camping early because Canadian visitors snap up sites fast.
weather.gov/btv/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Keeseville?
You'll be just fine, the Keeseville area is genuinely one of the friendliest places in the Northeast for first time renting an RV. Roads like US-9, NY-9N, and the I-87 Northway are wide, well-maintained, and traffic is light outside of summer weekends. Your RVezy host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, dumping tanks, and the propane system, plus you can call or text them mid-trip with questions. Start with a smaller Class C or campervan if you're nervous, practice in a parking lot for 15 minutes, and avoid driving Whiteface Memorial Highway or steep secondary roads after dark. Confidence comes quickly.
dmv.ny.gov/about-dmv/safety-tipsWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Take a breath, you are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance for issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing, and RVezy support is reachable around the clock. Your host is also a message away and usually responds within minutes, since they know their RV better than anyone. For mechanical issues near Keeseville, Plattsburgh (about 20 minutes north) has the closest RV service shops and a major hospital. Cell coverage is solid along the I-87 corridor and Lake Champlain shoreline but spotty deep in the High Peaks, so download offline maps before heading toward Lake Placid or Tupper Lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Keeseville RV rental into Canada or Vermont?
Vermont trips are easy: hop on the Lake Champlain ferry from Port Kent to Burlington or drive south to the Crown Point Bridge with just your driver's license. Canada is also possible from Keeseville, the border at Champlain, NY is about 35 miles north, but cross-border travel depends on the host's permission and insurance, so message them before booking to confirm. Bring a passport or enhanced driver's license and declare the RV at customs. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there, but the U.S. and Canada give you a continent of adventure to explore.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will I spend on fuel for a Keeseville RV trip?
Fuel is one of your biggest variable costs, so it helps to plan. Most Class C motorhomes in the Keeseville area average 8 to 10 miles per gallon (mpg), travel trailers towed by a pickup get about 10 to 13 mpg combined, and campervans can stretch to 16 to 18 mpg. With New York gas around $3.40 to $3.80 per gallon in the North Country (typically a bit cheaper than downstate), budget roughly $0.40 per mile for a Class C. The Sunoco and Stewart's Shops along US-9 and I-87 Exit 34 are convenient fuel stops with RV-friendly pumps. Pro tip: top up in Plattsburgh before heading into the High Peaks, prices climb in resort towns.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Keeseville?
Book early, especially for July, August, and fall foliage weekends. New York State DEC campgrounds like Ausable Point and Lincoln Pond open reservations up to 9 months ahead through ReserveAmerica (newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com or 1-800-456-2267), and waterfront sites get snapped up the morning they're released at 9 AM. Private campgrounds like Ausable Chasm Campground typically open bookings in January for the upcoming season. For Labor Day or peak foliage week (late September), aim to reserve 4 to 6 months out. Last-minute trip? DEC allows same-day reservations until 5 PM, and weekday midweek availability is much better than weekends.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Keeseville?
Driving around Keeseville is refreshingly easy compared to most metros, the I-87 Northway runs right past town with two lanes each direction and minimal congestion. Local roads like US-9 and NY-9N follow gentle Adirondack terrain with a few rolling hills but no white-knuckle mountain passes near town. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk along forested stretches, especially between Keeseville and Wilmington. If you're heading into the High Peaks toward Lake Placid via NY-86 or up Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway, expect steeper grades, taller motorhomes should descend in low gear. Winter brings real snow from November through March, so most rentals are summer/fall focused.
511ny.org/What amenities do campgrounds near Keeseville offer?
Local campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable Adirondack stay. Ausable Chasm Campground offers 30/50 amp electric, full hookups (water, sewer, electric), a dump station, heated pool, laundry, hot showers, and a camp store with firewood. Ausable Point Campground (DEC) has electric hookups at many sites, a dump station, potable water fill, a sandy Lake Champlain beach, and flush toilets. Most private parks have free WiFi near the office (don't count on strong signal at your site). To dump tanks and fill fresh water mid-trip, Ausable Chasm Campground and most KOAs along I-87 allow non-guests to use their dump stations for a small fee (typically $10 to $20).
dec.ny.gov/places/state-campgroundsWhat's inside a typical Keeseville RV rental?
You'll be impressed by how much fits into a motorhome rental Keeseville. Most Class C motorhomes and travel trailers on RVezy sleep 4 to 8 people across queen beds, bunk beds, and convertible dinettes, with a full kitchen (fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, propane furnace, and a flat-screen TV. Many include a generator or solar setup for off-grid nights, awnings for outdoor lounging, and outdoor seatbelts for every passenger required to be in motion. Campervans are cozier but still pack a bed, kitchenette, and often a wet bath. Check the listing photos and amenity list, every rig is unique and hosts list exactly what's included.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/seat-beltsWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for a campervan rental Keeseville?
Hosts offer all kinds of extras to make your Keeseville campervan rental turnkey. Popular add-ons include bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits with cookware and dishes ($25 to $50), camping chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, kayaks or SUPs (huge near Lake Champlain), generators, and propane fill. Mileage policies vary, some listings include unlimited mileage, others give you 100 to 150 free miles per day with a $0.30 to $0.45 per-mile fee after that. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Keeseville, Peru, or Plattsburgh, but delivery to your campground is widely available. Confirm pickup time, fuel-return policy, and dump-station expectations in the booking message.
dec.ny.gov/places/adirondack-parkHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure: you pay through RVezy directly (never in cash to the host), and your card is charged according to the booking schedule shown at checkout. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV class, and it is released after the trip once the host confirms the RV returned in good shape with tanks dumped and fuel topped off. To avoid any deposit issues on your Keeseville rental, do a walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's fuel and cleaning instructions, and report any incidents right away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Keeseville?
Keeseville is an ideal launchpad for a classic Northeast RV road trip. Lake Placid and the 1980 Olympic Village sit 50 miles southwest (about 1 hour), great for hiking the High Peaks and visiting Mirror Lake. Burlington, Vermont is just across Lake Champlain by ferry (25 minutes plus crossing). Montreal is 90 miles north for a cross-border city escape, and the Thousand Islands region sits about 170 miles west along the St. Lawrence. For an unforgettable family RV trip Keeseville loop, do Ausable Chasm to Lake Placid to Tupper Lake's Wild Center (75 miles) and back, around 200 miles total with stunning scenery the entire way.
