RV travelers use it as a base for reaching riverfront state parks between Clayton and Alexandria Bay, along with a cluster of private campgrounds and marinas within a 20-minute radius.
The closest options run the full range of RV setups. 1000 Islands Campground sits between the villages of Alexandria Bay and Clayton, with sites for daily, monthly, and seasonal stays. Grass Point State Park is on a point of land that projects into the American Channel of the St. Lawrence River, popular for boating, swimming, fishing, and picnicking, with a marina, boat launch, and a sandy beach with shallow water excellent for children. Swan Bay Resort and Marina and Lanzs Campground Cottages and Motel offer full-hookup private-park alternatives on the river.
Keewaydin State Park is on the St. Lawrence River, offering boating and fishing, with a sheltered marina that provides dock space for seasonal and transient visitors and 48 campsites overlooking the river. Together these parks give travelers a mix of hookup levels, waterfront access, and site styles within easy reach of La Fargeville.
Things to do near La Fargeville
The river drives most trip plans. The sandy beach and shallow water at Grass Point State Park are excellent for children, and Keewaydin State Park also has a swimming pool and picnic areas for cooler days. Boat launches at Grass Point, Keewaydin, and Swan Bay Resort and Marina make it straightforward to put in a fishing boat or kayak, and the St. Lawrence River is well-known for smallmouth and largemouth bass fishing, and it is also home to muskies, pike, pumpkinseeds, bluegill, and perch.
Off the water, families typically build day trips around Boldt Castle on Heart Island, Singer Castle on Dark Island, and the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton. Narrated cruises depart in season from Alexandria Bay and Clayton, and the Thousand Islands International Bridge gives access to the Canadian side for an Ontario detour.

The camping window is short. Grass Point State Park's camping and cabin season runs from mid-May through mid-September, and most other regional state park campgrounds follow a similar mid-May to mid-October window. Private parks such as Lanzs Campground Cottages and Motel and 1000 Islands Campground typically open in May and close in October.
Peak demand is mid-June through August. Peak season runs from the end of June to the end of August, and weekend sites at the state parks routinely sell out. Late May and September are the quieter shoulders, with cool nights and thinner crowds.
Winters are severe. Lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario piles up quickly, and RV access to most campgrounds ends after the fall shutdown. Keewaydin remains open for ice fishing and cross-country skiing in winter, but overnight RV camping is not part of the winter product here.
How to book
State park sites in the Thousand Islands are booked through ReserveAmerica. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival for campsites only, reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. Grass Point is particularly popular in summer, so booking early is advised.
Campsite reservations can be made for today and up to 9 months in advance. Private parks such as 1000 Islands Campground, Swan Bay Resort and Marina, and Lanzs Campground Cottages and Motel take direct bookings through their own websites, and Swan Bay in particular fills far in advance for peak weekends.
What to expect
Expect basic but functional facilities at the state parks. Grass Point has 20 electric sites at 20-amp service, check-in is 3 PM and check-out is 11 AM, and there are no water or sewer hook-ups on individual sites. Facilities include showers and dumping stations. The maximum RV length is 30 feet, and all sites are configured for back-in parking.
Private parks fill the amenity gap, with 30- and 50-amp service, full hookups on many sites, and options that include tent sites, cabin rentals, and cottages depending on the operator.
A few practical notes: cell service can switch between US and Canadian carriers on sites close to the border, and food should be secured overnight due to common wildlife.
