Campgrounds near Long Lake, New York
Long Lake sits in the central Adirondacks along a fourteen-mile stretch of water that feeds the Raquette River, surrounded by the six-million-acre Adirondack Park. RV travelers in the area have three broad options: state-run DEC campgrounds with reserved sites and basic amenities, private RV parks with hookups, and free primitive campsites in the Moose River Plains Complex, an 79,487-acre Adirondack Forest Preserve unit and adjacent Wild Forest lands.
Closer-in choices include Hosss Campground and Blue Jay Campsites near the village, plus Thornbush Acres RV Park for travelers who want full-service hookups. West and south of town, Moose River Plains - Wakely Pond- DEC and Horseshoe Lake - DEC offer designated roadside campsites administered by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
Expect a mix of forested, lake-adjacent, and rustic backcountry settings. The village itself has fuel, groceries, a laundromat, and boat launches, which makes Long Lake a practical base for a longer Adirondack loop through Blue Mountain Lake, Tupper Lake, and Raquette Lake.
Things to do around Long Lake
Paddling is the signature activity. The Raquette River corridor connects Long Lake to Forked Lake and beyond, and canoe and kayak rentals are available in the village. Fishing is productive for lake trout, landlocked salmon, and smallmouth bass, and a New York State fishing license is required.
Hiking trails around Owls Head Mountain and the Sargent Ponds Wild Forest are accessible within a short drive. The 3.0-mile Wakely Mountain Trail climbs 1,600 feet to a 3,744-foot summit fire tower with a 360-degree view. Seaplane rides operate out of the village and give a quick overhead look at the surrounding lakes and peaks.
Families staying at Blue Jay Campsites or Hosss Campground can reach the town beach, mini-golf, and ice cream stands on foot or by short drive. The Moose River Plains road system is popular for wildlife viewing, mountain biking, and remote trout ponds.

The DEC campground season in the Adirondacks generally runs from mid-May through Columbus Day weekend, with some smaller facilities closing by Labor Day. Private parks such as Thornbush Acres RV Park tend to follow similar dates, though some extend later into October for foliage travelers.
Summer is the peak window. July and August bring the warmest weather, the busiest boat traffic, and the fullest campgrounds. Black flies are heaviest from late May into mid-June, and mosquitoes and ticks stay active from spring into fall, so screen tents and repellent are worth packing.
Late September through early October delivers strong fall color across the maples and birches, cooler nights, and fewer bugs. Winter closes almost all developed camping, though snowmobile trails, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing keep the region active. Public vehicle access to the Moose River Plains roads runs from Memorial Day to the end of deer hunting season, and spring shoulder season is quiet but wet, with muddy or gated access roads into the Wild Forests.
How to book a site
New York State DEC campgrounds are reserved through the ReserveAmerica system, online or by phone at 1-800-456-CAMP. Reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, and popular July and August weekends fill quickly. Same-day reservations are allowed until 5pm on day of arrival at all DEC campgrounds, and walk-ins are not permitted.
Private parks such as Hosss Campground, Blue Jay Campsites, and Thornbush Acres RV Park take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Booking well ahead is strongly recommended for holiday weekends and peak foliage weeks.
Roadside primitive sites at Moose River Plains - Wakely Pond- DEC and Horseshoe Lake - DEC are available on a first come, first served basis with no reservations, and there is no charge. Sites are marked with yellow DEC discs and can fill by Thursday afternoon in high season.
What to expect on site
Developed DEC campgrounds in the region typically offer flush toilets, hot showers, potable water, picnic tables, fire rings, and a trailer dump station. Most do not offer electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites, so RV renters should arrive with full fresh-water tanks and empty holding tanks. Thornbush Acres RV Park is the local option for full hookups.
Cell service is spotty to nonexistent once outside the village. Black bears are active throughout the Adirondacks, so use provided food lockers where available and never leave food or coolers unattended.
The 23-mile access road into Moose River Plains requires slow travel, and roads at Horseshoe Lake are also gravel and can be rough. Large Class A rigs and long fifth wheels should confirm access before committing to a remote site. Firewood must be sourced locally to prevent the spread of invasive pests.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Long Lake, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Long Lake, NY?
RV rental in Long Lake is affordable for the Adirondack experience you get. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run about $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs can reach $300 or more. Because hosts set their own pricing, you can filter by budget and find a cheap RV rental in Long Lake that still includes lake-ready features. To save more, book midweek, target late June or post Labor Day, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Many Long Lake hosts also include camp chairs, paddleboards, or kayaks at no extra cost.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Long%20Lake,%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Long Lake?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Long Lake, NY. New York State does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement for personal RVs under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every motorhome and trailer on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older, and ID verification happens right through the RVezy platform during booking, so there's no paperwork to mail or office to visit. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (usually under $20 from your local auto club). Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the whole process is.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-driver-licenseIs RV rental insurance included for my Long Lake trip?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Long Lake includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive into the Adirondacks with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your level of coverage at checkout based on how much extra cushion you want. This is purpose-built coverage for peer-to-peer RV rentals and handles the situations renters worry about most. With cell service patchy on Route 30 between Long Lake and Tupper Lake, knowing roadside help is one call away makes a real difference.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Long Lake plans change?
Booking is low risk. RVezy sets a standard cancellation policy on every reservation (not the host), so the rules are consistent across every Long Lake listing you compare. There is a grace period right after booking during which eligible cancellations can receive a full refund, and refund amounts after that depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host cancels, RVezy helps you rebook or provides a refund. Full details are in your booking confirmation and the RVezy Help Center, so you always know where you stand.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Long Lake RV trip?
Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in Long Lake is easy to find on RVezy: toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you will see every host who welcomes four-legged guests. Long Lake is one of the most dog-friendly corners of the Adirondacks. Lake Eaton Campground and Forked Lake Campground both allow leashed pets, and dogs are welcome on much of the Northville-Placid Trail. Buttermilk Falls, a short drive south on Route 30, is a classic photo stop. Always message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any breed or size notes.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/camping/petsCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Long Lake?
Yes, RV delivery in Long Lake is offered by many RVezy hosts, and it's hands down the easiest way to start a trip if you're new to RVing. Your host can drop off the RV at popular spots like Lake Eaton Campground, Forked Lake Campground, or even a private cabin rental, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. You skip the stress of towing a trailer up Route 28N or maneuvering a motorhome on narrow Adirondack roads. Filter listings by Delivery, then message the host with your campsite number and dates to get an exact quote. Many hosts also offer pickup at trip's end for a stress free return.
parks.ny.gov/camping/How far can I travel from Long Lake during my rental?
Long Lake is a great Adirondack hub, and most RVezy hosts offer generous daily mileage, with some listings including RV rental with unlimited mileage. From Long Lake you can reach Lake Placid in about 45 miles, Saranac Lake in roughly 40 miles, Old Forge in about 45 miles, Lake George in about 75 miles, and Montreal in around 175 miles if your host approves cross-border travel. A popular RV road trip from Long Lake is the Adirondack scenic loop combining Route 30, Route 28, and Route 73. Always confirm mileage allowance and any cross-border permission in the listing before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Long%20Lake,%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds near Long Lake, NY?
You have fantastic options right in town. Lake Eaton Campground (NY State DEC) sits just outside the village with a sandy beach, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station, suitable for many motorhomes. Forked Lake Campground offers a more rustic, paddle-in feel with a boat launch. Golden Beach Campground on Raquette Lake (about 20 minutes south) has a swimming beach and accommodates larger RVs. Eighth Lake Campground on Route 28 is popular for fishing. For full hookups, consider a private park or a private RVezy host with shore power. Book DEC sites through ReserveAmerica well in advance for July and August.
dec.ny.gov/places/lake-eaton-campgroundWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Long Lake?
Late June through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Long Lake. July and August bring the warmest weather (highs commonly in the mid 70s to low 80s F, lows in the 50s), perfect for swimming and paddling the Raquette River. Late September into early October delivers the Adirondacks' famous fall foliage with crisp days and cool nights ideal for campfires. May and early June are quieter and cheaper, though black flies peak from late May to mid June (pack a head net). Most state campgrounds close around mid October as winter settles in.
weather.gov/aly/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in the Adirondacks?
You've got this. First time renting an RV in Long Lake is easier than people expect, because every RVezy host gives you a hands on orientation at pickup covering driving, leveling, the propane system, water tanks, and the generator. Route 30 through Long Lake is a well maintained two lane road with gentle grades and plenty of pull offs, much friendlier than mountain passes out west. Take it slow on the curves between Long Lake and Tupper Lake, watch for deer at dawn and dusk, and use lower gears on the Blue Mountain hill heading south. If driving still feels intimidating, choose a host who offers delivery and setup so you can skip the drive entirely.
dot.ny.gov/portal/page/portal/traffic-engineering-safetyWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on my Long Lake trip?
You are covered. Every RV rental in Long Lake booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one call away whether you have a flat on Route 28N, a dead battery at Lake Eaton, or a propane issue at a remote site. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip, and your host is usually a quick text away for small questions like operating the awning. Tip: cell service can drop between Blue Mountain Lake and Long Lake, so save the RVezy roadside number and your host contact before heading out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Long Lake RV rental into Canada?
Cross-border trips to Canada are possible from Long Lake, but you must get written approval from your host before booking, because not every RV is permitted for international travel. Montreal sits about 175 miles north (around a 3.5 hour drive via I-87), making it a popular add-on. If your host approves, you will need a valid passport, vehicle registration, and a written permission letter from the host, plus you must declare any food, alcohol, or firewood at the border. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Confirm everything in writing through the RVezy message thread before finalizing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037771454-Can-I-take-an-RV-across-the-borderWhat should I budget for fuel on my Long Lake RV trip?
Fuel is a manageable line item once you plan for it. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get 10 to 14 MPG, and Class A coaches run 7 to 10 MPG. Gas in the central Adirondacks tends to run 20 to 40 cents above the New York State average since stations are sparse, so fill up in Tupper Lake, Indian Lake, or before leaving Albany rather than waiting until Long Lake. A typical 4 day, 300 mile loop in a Class C costs roughly $100 to $140 in fuel. Pro tip: the Stewart's Shop in Long Lake village is the most reliable place to top off before heading deeper into the park.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Long Lake?
Book early to lock in the best sites. New York State DEC campgrounds like Lake Eaton, Forked Lake, Golden Beach, and Eighth Lake open reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and the lakefront sites for July and August often fill within days. For a smooth Long Lake RV trip, aim to reserve by February or March for summer weekends, and by May for fall foliage in late September. Shoulder season (mid June or post Labor Day) is much more forgiving and you can often snag waterfront sites with two weeks' notice. Insider tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have openings, even in peak season.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/camping/reservationsWhat are the driving conditions like around Long Lake?
Driving in and around Long Lake is genuinely pleasant. Route 30 (the main artery) is a smooth two lane highway with light traffic, even in peak summer, and the scenic Route 28N from Long Lake to Newcomb is a classic Adirondack drive. Watch for wildlife (deer and the occasional moose) at dawn and dusk, slow down on the winding stretch near Blue Mountain Lake, and remember that gas stations are 25 to 40 miles apart. Winter brings heavy snow and ice from November through April, so most RVers stick to mid May through mid October. Cell coverage drops in pockets, especially north of Tupper Lake, so download offline maps before you roll out.
511ny.org/What amenities will I find at Long Lake area campgrounds?
Long Lake area campgrounds offer a good mix to match any RV. Lake Eaton, Forked Lake, and Golden Beach (all DEC sites) provide picnic tables, fire rings, flush toilets, hot showers, potable water spigots, and trailer dump stations, but they do not have individual electric, water, or sewer hookups, so arrive with full fresh tanks and a charged battery or onboard generator. For full hookups, look at private parks in the broader region or a private RVezy host with shore power. Tip: top off your fresh water tank at the campground spigot on arrival, since potable water at remote sites can be limited.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/campingWhat is included inside a typical Long Lake RV rental?
RVezy rentals are turnkey. A typical motorhome rental in Long Lake comes with a queen or king bed, a kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, a dinette that converts to extra sleeping space, air conditioning, a furnace for chilly Adirondack nights, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Many hosts include linens, towels, and basic kitchen kits, and some add a generator, outdoor speakers, or a Starlink unit (handy since Wi-Fi and cell service are spotty north of town). Always check the listing amenities, and message the host for specifics like a high chair or coffee maker. Family RV trip Long Lake setups often include bikes, paddleboards, and lawn games too.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Long%20Lake,%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Long Lake?
Hosts offer a range of add-ons to customize your Long Lake RV trip. Common extras include kayaks and paddleboards, bikes, fire pits, propane refills, generator hours, and linen or kitchen kits if not already included. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in or near Long Lake, Tupper Lake, or Indian Lake, with delivery available from many hosts for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary: many listings include around 100 to 150 free miles per day with a small fee per additional mile, and some offer unlimited mileage packages. Bundle delivery, setup, and a kayak add-on for a no-stress turnkey trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Long%20Lake,%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host, which keeps your money protected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment before the trip starts (the amount varies by listing) and is released after the host confirms a smooth return. To avoid deposit issues, complete the pickup walkthrough carefully, photograph the interior and exterior at both ends of the trip, return the RV with the agreed fuel and tank levels, and stay within your mileage allowance.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle cold nights and shoulder season camping near Long Lake?
Shoulder season RV camping in Long Lake is one of the best kept Adirondack secrets, and a little prep makes it cozy. Nights in May, September, and October regularly dip into the 30s and 40s F, so look for RVezy listings with a working propane furnace, good insulation, and ideally heated holding tanks if you plan to camp past mid October. Bring extra propane, warm bedding, and a small electric space heater for nights when you have shore power. Lake Eaton typically stays open through mid October, making it a good pick for fall foliage trips. Colors usually peak around the last week of September here, a bit earlier than Lake George.
