Camping near North Creek, New York
North Creek sits in the southeastern Adirondacks along the upper Hudson River, in the town of Johnsburg, Warren County. The village is a practical base for RV travellers heading into the Adirondack Park, a six-million-acre mix of public Forest Preserve and private land regulated under state land-use classifications. Gore Mountain rises just west of town, and Route 28 links North Creek to Warrensburg, Lake George, and the central Adirondack lakes.
Camping options in the area split into two categories. State-managed sites in the 114,010-acre Siamese Ponds Wilderness are primitive and non-motorized, while privately owned campgrounds along Route 28 and the Schroon River corridor provide RV hookups, cabins, and family amenities.
Closest to town, Siamese Ponds Wilderness - Thirteenth Lake - DEC offers backcountry sites. Within a short drive, Daggett Lake Campsites, Riverside Pines Campsites and Cabins, Country Haven Campground, and Tin Teepe Family Campground handle most RV traffic.
Things to do around North Creek
Paddling and hiking dominate the warm-weather calendar. Popular points of interest in the Siamese Ponds Wilderness include the Siamese Ponds themselves, Puffer Pond, Puffer Mountain, Chimney Mountain, Auger Falls, and Thirteenth Lake. Thirteenth Lake has a small sand beach at the northern end that draws picnickers, swimmers, and campers, and the lake is a common launch for canoes and kayaks.
Hikers can pick from short lake loops or full-day summits. The Hour Pond Trail runs about 7.2 miles out and back along Thirteenth Lake to a secluded pond, and Peaked Mountain delivers open views over the Siamese Ponds region. Whitewater rafting on the Hudson River Gorge runs out of North Creek in spring, and Gore Mountain adds lift-served mountain biking, scenic gondola rides, and winter skiing.

The camping season for private RV parks is short. Daggett Lake Campsites is generally open from early May through mid-October, and Riverside Pines runs from mid-May through Columbus Day, which is typical for the region. Backcountry camping in Siamese Ponds Wilderness is available year-round, but access, blowdown, and stream crossings become harder outside summer and early fall.
Summer brings the warmest, busiest conditions and heavy weekend demand around Lake George and Gore Mountain. Black-fly season peaks in late May and early June, roughly from Mother's Day through Father's Day in the Adirondacks, and mosquitoes stay active through midsummer. Late September and early October deliver Adirondack fall foliage and cooler nights.
Winter is cold and snowy, with heavy lake-effect and upslope snowfall. Most private campgrounds are closed, but the surrounding wilderness sees cross-country skiers and snowshoers using trails that double as summer hiking routes.
Booking a campground near North Creek
Reservation rules depend on whether the site is state-managed or private. State-run DEC campgrounds, including Indian Lake Islands along the western edge of the Siamese Ponds Wilderness, take reservations through the ReserveAmerica system, and a DEC campground can be booked up to nine months in advance. Same-day reservations are also allowed until 5 p.m. on the day of arrival, and walk-ins are not permitted.
Primitive backcountry camping in Siamese Ponds Wilderness works differently. All camping is first come, first served, and no reservations are accepted. Stays longer than three nights at one site require a permit from the local Forest Ranger.
Private campgrounds such as Daggett Lake Campsites, Riverside Pines Campsites and Cabins, Country Haven Campground, and Tin Teepe Family Campground take reservations directly through their operators. Summer holiday weekends fill early, so book well in advance for July and August stays.
What to expect at North Creek campgrounds
Site style varies sharply. Private parks along Route 28 and the Schroon River offer full RV hookups, showers, laundry, and lake or river access. Daggett Lake Campsites sits on a private-lake preserve of several hundred acres with full-hookup RV sites, pull-throughs for larger rigs, cabins, a dump station, and a general store. Riverside Pines Campsites and Cabins is set on the Schroon River with wooded RV and tent sites, river access, and family amenities.
Thirteenth Lake sites in the Siamese Ponds Wilderness are primitive. The campsites and hand boat launch sit roughly 500 feet from the parking area, and each site has a picnic table, fireplace, and privy. There are no hookups, no potable water, and no cell service in much of the backcountry.
Expect narrow, winding access roads, active bear country requiring proper food storage, and limited big-rig turnarounds at wilderness trailheads. Larger RVs should stick to the private parks near Warrensburg and Chestertown.

Pro tip: midweek pickups often unlock the best pricing on the platform.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Creek,%20New%20YorkDo I need a special license to rent an RV in North Creek?
Good news: for nearly every RV rental in North Creek, NY, your regular Class D driver's license is all you need. New York State allows you to drive motorhomes and tow travel trailers with a standard license as long as the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) stays at or under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every rental on RVezy. The only requirements to rent are being 25 or older with a valid license, and identification is verified through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters are amazed at how simple the process is, leaving you free to focus on Gore Mountain and the Hudson River Gorge.

You can book your North Creek RV trip with confidence because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking. Plans change, weather shifts, or a Nor'easter rolls through the Adirondacks: RVezy's policy considers how far in advance you cancel and accounts for events like natural disasters that affect Warren County travel. Because the details depend on timing and circumstances, the full policy lives on the RVezy Help Center, and customer support can walk you through your specific situation. Pro tip: lock in your preferred RV early for Gore Mountain ski weeks or July Hudson River rafting season, knowing flexibility is built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip in North Creek?
Absolutely, the Adirondacks are a dog lover's paradise and you'll find plenty of pet-friendly RV rental North Creek options on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching, then message the host to confirm pet fees or breed notes. Once you're rolling, dogs are welcome (leashed, six feet max) at New York State DEC campgrounds like Lake Durant and Lewey Lake as long as you bring a current rabies vaccination certificate. Trails like the Schaefer Trail to the North Creek Reservoir and the gentle paths around the North Creek Ski Bowl are great for paws. Insider tip: pack a towel for muddy returns from the Hudson River swimming spots.
dec.ny.gov/places/lewey-lake-campground-and-day-use-areaCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in North Creek?
Yes, RV delivery North Creek is one of the smartest moves for first-time renters and anyone flying into Albany International Airport. Many RVezy hosts in the Gore Mountain region will deliver the RV straight to your campsite at Lake Durant, Lewey Lake, or a private campground like Alpine Lake RV Resort in Corinth, set it up, level it, connect hookups, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees typically scale with distance, so message the host with your destination to get an exact quote. This is gold if you'd rather not drive a 28-foot motorhome down Route 28 on day one. Pro tip: ask about pickup-and-return delivery too, it's often a package deal.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Creek,%20New%20YorkHow far can I drive on a North Creek RV trip?
Plenty far, the Adirondacks are made for an RV road trip from North Creek. Each host sets their own mileage policy, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and some listing RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer adventures. From North Creek you're 28 miles to Lake George, 60 miles to Saratoga Springs, 95 miles to Lake Placid, 110 miles to Burlington, Vermont, and about 240 miles to Montreal. Check the mileage section on each listing before booking, and if you're planning a big loop through the High Peaks, just message the host to ask about a flat-rate mileage add-on. Pro tip: extra miles purchased upfront are almost always cheaper than overage fees.
adirondack.net/north-creek-gore-mountain/Where should I camp with my RV near North Creek?
You're spoiled for choice for RV camping North Creek adventures. Lake Durant Campground (about 35 miles north on Route 28/30) offers wooded sites, a dump station, hot showers, and views of Blue Mountain. Lewey Lake Campground sits on Lewey Lake near Indian Lake and welcomes larger RVs. For full hookups, Alpine Lake RV Resort in Corinth and Schroon River Escape Lodges and RV Park to the east are excellent picks, while Moose Hillock Camping Resort near Lake George brings pool-and-waterslide energy. Both DEC campgrounds book through ReserveAmerica up to nine months out. Pro tip: 13th Lake's primitive sites are first come, first served and worth the early arrival.
dec.ny.gov/places/lake-durant-campground-and-day-use-areaWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in North Creek?
North Creek is a genuine four-season destination, so the best time depends on your vibe. Late June through early September brings warm days (highs 75 to 82°F) perfect for Hudson River rafting and Gore Mountain mountain biking, while late September into mid-October explodes with some of the Northeast's best fall foliage and crisp 60°F days. Winter (December through March) drops to lows in the teens and single digits but turns North Creek into a ski paradise at Gore Mountain, so look for RVs with heated tanks and shore power. Spring shoulder season (May) is whitewater rafting prime time when snowmelt swells the Hudson Gorge to Class III and IV rapids. Pro tip: peak foliage typically hits the first two weeks of October.
weather.gov/aly/I've never rented an RV before, will I be okay in North Creek?
Absolutely, first time renting an RV in North Creek is easier than most people expect. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, water systems, slide-outs, leveling, and dump procedures, so you're never figuring it out alone. You can also message hosts before booking with any question, and RVezy customer support plus 24/7 roadside assistance are there during your trip. Around North Creek, Route 28 is a wide, well-maintained two-lane highway that's very RV-friendly, and most local campgrounds have pull-through sites. Pro tip: choose a Class C or travel trailer under 25 feet for your first trip, it drives like a big van and parks easily at Gore Mountain's lower lot.
dot.ny.gov/What happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're covered: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, which is a big deal when you're deep in the Adirondacks where cell service can disappear (looking at you, Indian Lake area). If you get a flat on Route 28, lock yourself out at Lake Durant, or need a tow off a backroad near Bakers Mills, one call dispatches help. For mechanical or system issues, message your host directly through the RVezy app, they know their RV best and can troubleshoot quickly. Pro tip: download offline Google Maps for the Gore Mountain region before you leave the I-87 corridor, and screenshot your roadside assistance number so it's handy even without signal.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV across the border to Canada from North Creek?
Yes, North Creek is a fantastic launchpad for a cross-border RV road trip from North Creek to Canada, with Montreal just about 240 miles north via I-87. Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed on many RVezy rentals, but it depends on the host and the insurance attached to that specific listing, so message the host before booking to confirm and get written approval in the chat. You'll need passports for everyone on board and your rental agreement at the border. Heads up: travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: Vermont (Burlington is 110 miles east) makes a great alternate cross-state adventure with zero border paperwork.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a North Creek RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables, but it's easy to budget for. Class C motorhomes around North Creek average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 16 to 20 MPG, and a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer typically lands at 10 to 14 MPG. New York State gas prices in the Warren County area generally run a little above the national average. For a 300-mile loop hitting Lake George, Saratoga, and back to Gore Mountain in a Class C, expect roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Warrensburg or Queensbury where stations are larger and RV-friendly, rather than the smaller pumps in the hamlets along Route 28.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near North Creek?
Book early and you'll get exactly the campsite you want. The best campgrounds near North Creek, including DEC campgrounds like Lake Durant and Lewey Lake, open reservations up to nine months in advance through ReserveAmerica at newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com or 1-800-456-CAMP. For July, August, and fall foliage weekends in early October, aim to book three to six months out, and for ski season near Gore Mountain, December through February sites at private RV parks fill fast too. Holiday weekends (July 4th, Labor Day, Columbus Day) often require three-night minimums. Pro tip: same-day DEC reservations are accepted until 5 p.m., a clutch backup if you decide to extend your Adirondack trip.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/campingWhat are the driving conditions like around North Creek?
Driving an RV around North Creek is genuinely pleasant. Route 28 is the main artery, a well-paved two-lane road with gradual grades and wide shoulders that handles motorhomes comfortably. I-87 (the Adirondack Northway) connects you to Albany and the Canadian border with easy on/off ramps. The terrain is rolling Adirondack foothills, no extreme mountain passes, though Peaceful Valley Road up to Gore Mountain has some moderate grades. Winter brings snow and ice from November through March, so if you're booking a ski trip, ask the host about snow tires. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk along Route 28N and stretches near Bakers Mills. Pro tip: avoid driving Route 28 between 3 and 5 p.m. on Sundays in foliage season when day-trippers stream south.
511ny.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near North Creek?
Adirondack campgrounds range from full-service to wonderfully rustic. Lake Durant and Lewey Lake DEC campgrounds offer flush toilets, hot showers, a trailer dump station, potable water fill-up, sand beaches, and boat launches, though they don't have site hookups, so plan on dry camping with your fresh, gray, and black tanks. Private parks like Alpine Lake RV Resort, Schroon River Escape, and Moose Hillock provide full hookups (electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. Cell signal in the deeper Adirondacks (around Indian Lake) can be spotty, so download maps and entertainment before you go. Pro tip: New York's firewood rule limits untreated wood to a 50-mile radius from origin, so buy locally to protect the forests.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/campingWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in North Creek?
Most RV rentals in North Creek come ready for adventure. Expect a queen or king bed plus bunks or convertible dinettes (sleeping anywhere from 2 to 8), a full kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings include a TV, propane generator for off-grid power, awning, outdoor chairs, and basic kitchenware. For Gore Mountain winter trips, look for RVs with heated holding tanks and shore power compatibility. Check each listing's amenities tab carefully and message the host if you need specifics like a CPAP outlet or pet bowls. Pro tip: many hosts offer add-ons like linen packages, kayaks, and bike racks, perfect for Hudson River paddling days.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/campingHow do pickup, drop-off, and add-ons work for a North Creek RV rental?
Pickup and drop-off are flexible and host-set. Most North Creek hosts schedule pickups in the early afternoon and returns by late morning to allow cleaning, with a full walkthrough included so you leave knowing every switch and tank. Many hosts offer popular add-ons like generators, bike racks, kayaks, camping chairs, propane refills, and linen and kitchen packages, all listed and priced clearly on the listing page. Mileage policies vary, with most hosts offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and reasonable per-mile overage rates, plus options to prepay extra mileage if you're planning a big Adirondack loop. Pro tip: confirm pickup logistics, especially for ski trips when Gore Mountain traffic picks up around 8 a.m.
visitnorthcreek.org/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through RVezy, no cash, no awkward exchanges with the host. You pay your rental total securely through the platform when you book, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized (not charged) on your card before your trip. Deposit amounts are set by each host and listed on the listing page. As long as you return the RV in the same condition, on time, and within mileage and generator limits, the hold is released after your trip. To avoid surprises, take date-stamped photos of the RV at pickup and drop-off and review the host's fuel and dump policies. Pro tip: refilling the propane and emptying tanks before return at the Lake Durant dump station usually saves you a service fee.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre RV rentals available in North Creek during ski season?
Yes, winter is one of the most magical times to rent an RV in North Creek, and many RVezy hosts keep their rigs available year-round for Gore Mountain ski trips. Look for listings that specifically mention four-season use, heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and 30 or 50-amp shore power, all essential when temperatures drop into the teens. Several private campgrounds and seasonal RV sites near Warrensburg and Lake George stay open with electric hookups through winter, though most DEC campgrounds close mid-October. Message hosts directly about cold-weather prep, like skirting and antifreeze for the plumbing. Pro tip: park as close to Gore Mountain's Ski Bowl as possible and let the RV become your slope-side basecamp, no early-morning drive needed.
