Camping near Old Forge, New York
Old Forge sits at the western edge of the six-million-acre Adirondack Park, at the foot of the Fulton Chain of Lakes. It functions as the main service town for RV travelers heading into the central Adirondacks, with grocery, fuel, propane, dump stations, and outfitters concentrated along NY Route 28.
Camping options split into three categories. Full-hookup private resorts sit right in town, led by Old Forge Camping Resort, which offers water and electric sites, pull-through sites, full hook-ups, and lakefront sites across a wooded property, with each site including a picnic table and fire circle. State-run DEC campgrounds ring the surrounding lakes, including Limekiln Lake, and free primitive roadside sites line the dirt roads inside the Moose River Plains.
RV travelers typically base out of a hookup site in or near Old Forge and use it as a staging point for day trips to Limekiln Lake, Seventh Lake, and the Moose River Plains, all within a short drive on Route 28.
Things to do around Old Forge
The Fulton Chain of Lakes drives most summer activity: paddling, motorboating, fishing for bass and lake trout, and swimming at village beaches. Enchanted Forest Water Safari, adjacent to Old Forge Camping Resort, is the region's largest family draw. McCauley Mountain runs a chairlift for hiking and scenic rides in summer and skiing in winter.
Hiking options range from short family climbs like Bald Mountain to longer routes on Black Bear Mountain and Wakely Mountain, which has a restored fire tower. Popular destinations inside the Moose River Plains Wild Forest include Cedar River Flow, Helldiver Pond, and Limekiln Lake, and a section of the Northville-Placid Trail crosses the wild forest near Cedar River Flow. Manestay Stables offers guided horseback rides for families looking for a break from the trail.

The core RV camping season runs from mid-May through mid-October. State DEC campgrounds around Old Forge typically open by mid-May and close in early to mid-October, with dates varying by site. July and August are peak: warm lake temperatures, easing black-fly pressure, and heavy weekend demand at every hookup campground in town.
Early fall brings the strongest color window, generally the last week of September through the first week of October, along with cooler nights and far lighter crowds. The Moose River Plains Road is a seasonal access road, generally open from Memorial Day through the close of deer hunting season, then used as a snowmobile route in winter.
Winter shuts most public campgrounds. Old Forge Camping Resort offers year-round camping with cabins, cottages, RV sites, tent sites, and nightly and seasonal rentals, which makes it the practical choice for snowmobile-season stays.
How to book a campsite near Old Forge
State-run DEC sites, including Limekiln Lake, are booked through ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites opening at the 9-month window at 8AM Monday to Friday and 9AM Saturday and Sunday from March 15 through Labor Day, and at 9AM daily from the day after Labor Day through March 14. DEC campgrounds allow same-day reservations online or by phone until 5pm on the day of arrival, and walk-ins are not permitted.
Private campgrounds like Old Forge Camping Resort book directly through their own website and fill fastest for July, August, and holiday weekends. Primitive roadside sites in the Moose River Plains, including the Red River area, and the Seventh Lake Boat Launch designated sites are first come, first served and cannot be reserved.
What to expect on the ground
Old Forge Camping Resort is the most RV-friendly option, with full hookups, laundry, showers, a camp store, and pet-friendly grounds, plus quick access to Enchanted Forest Water Safari next door.
DEC sites are more rustic. Limekiln Lake has a sand beach, swimming area, small boat launch, flush toilets, hot showers, and a trailer dump station, but no site hookups. Roadside camping in the Moose River Plains is genuinely primitive: 116 numbered roadside sites along Limekiln Lake-Cedar River Road, Otter Brook Road, and Rock Dam Road, most with a picnic table, fireplace, and privy, and no hookups for water or electricity. Cell service is unreliable to non-existent once deep inside the Plains, so download maps before leaving town.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Old Forge, NY
How much does an RV rental in Old Forge typically cost?
Good news: an RV rental in Old Forge, NY is one of the most budget-friendly ways to experience the Adirondacks. Travel trailers usually run about $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $300, and larger Class A motorhomes can be $250 to $450 nightly. Booking shoulder seasons like late May, early June, or mid-September gets you the best rates and far smaller crowds at places like Enchanted Forest Water Safari. Pro tip: filter for travel trailers if you want a cheap RV rental Old Forge families love, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts on stays of five nights or more.
experienceoldforge.com/plan/experience-by-season/summer/What license do I need to rent an RV in Old Forge, NY?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Old Forge, NY. New York State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for any RV under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every motorhome, campervan, and travel trailer on RVezy. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older and must upload their license through the platform for quick ID verification before pickup. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association along with your original license. That's it, you're ready to head up Route 28 into the Adirondacks.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included in Old Forge?
Yes, every RV rental in Old Forge booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head up Route 28 with real peace of mind. You choose your preferred protection level at checkout (not the host), and coverage helps protect you against most physical damage to the RV. That matters in the Adirondacks, where wildlife crossings and the occasional pothole on backroads near Big Moose or Eagle Bay are part of the territory. If a tire goes flat or the battery dies on your way to Nicks Lake, one call gets help dispatched. For first-time renters, this built-in coverage is often what makes booking an Old Forge RV trip feel easy.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat is the cancellation policy if my Adirondack plans change?
Booking an RV rental in Old Forge is low-risk because RVezy sets a standard cancellation policy that applies to every booking, not the host. You get a full money-back grace period right after you book, and after that, refund eligibility depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. If the host cancels, you receive a full refund or travel credit. You'll see the policy details at checkout and inside your RVezy account, so there are no surprises. The bottom line: you don't have to wait until the forecast over the Fulton Chain of Lakes looks perfect to lock in your motorhome rental Old Forge dates. Reserve early and adjust if life happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Old Forge?
Absolutely, and Old Forge is a dream destination for dog owners. Plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental Old Forge guests love, just use the 'Pet-Friendly' filter when searching on RVezy. Once you're here, leashed dogs are welcome on the TOBIE Trail (a 14-mile path connecting Old Forge, Thendara, Eagle Bay, and Inlet), at Nicks Lake Campground, and on most trails in the surrounding Adirondack Forest Preserve. The Old Forge public beach has off-leash hours posted in shoulder season. Pro tip: pack a tick check routine and bring fresh water for hikes up Bald Mountain, where the Rondaxe Fire Tower views are worth every step for you and your pup.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/hiking/petsCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Old Forge?
Yes, RV delivery Old Forge is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if you've never towed or driven a motorhome. Many RVezy hosts deliver directly to Old Forge Camping Resort, Singing Waters Campground, or Nicks Lake Campground, set up the rig on your site, level it, connect water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees typically range from $2 to $5 per mile or a flat rate within a set radius. Just message the host through the listing to confirm your campground address and delivery window. You show up with groceries and swimsuits, and your Adirondack vacation starts the moment you arrive.
oldforgecamping.com/How far can I drive, and what's the mileage policy?
You've got real range from Old Forge. Most RVezy hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day, with extra miles available for around $0.30 to $0.45 each, and some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips. That's plenty for circling the Fulton Chain of Lakes (about 18 miles end to end), driving to Lake Placid (90 miles, around 2 hours), or making the run to Niagara Falls (about 230 miles west). If you're planning a longer Adirondack loop through Tupper Lake and Saranac, message the host before booking to negotiate a higher mileage cap. Many are happy to bundle extra miles into a multi-day rate.
dot.ny.gov/regional-offices/region2Where are the best campgrounds near Old Forge to park my RV?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Old Forge offers. Nicks Lake Campground, a New York State DEC site just 2 miles from town, has 112 sites tucked into pine forest with a swimming beach and easy paddle access. Old Forge Camping Resort sits on 130 acres on Lake Serene with full hookups and a shuttle to Enchanted Forest Water Safari. HTR Adirondacks on the Moose River runs mid-May through mid-October and offers gated full-hookup sites. Eighth Lake Campground in nearby Inlet (10 miles east) is a state-run favorite with lakefront sites. Pro tip: book through ReserveAmerica nine months in advance for July and August weekends, which fill fast.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/camping/nicks-lakeWhen is the best time of year to plan an Old Forge RV trip?
Late June through early October is the sweet spot for an Old Forge RV trip, with daytime highs in the 70s°F in July and August and crisp 50s to 60s°F days for peak fall foliage in late September and early October. The Adirondacks here sit at around 1,700 feet elevation, so summer nights cool to the low 50s°F (perfect campfire weather). May is gorgeous but expect black flies through mid-June, so pack bug spray. Insider tip: late September is genuinely magical, the Adirondack Scenic Railroad runs foliage tours from Thendara, crowds thin out, and campground rates drop. Winter snowmobiling is also huge here, but most RV campgrounds close after Columbus Day.
weather.gov/aly/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Old Forge?
You'll do great, and Old Forge is actually one of the best places for a first time renting an RV. Route 28 from Utica into Old Forge is a wide, well-maintained two-lane highway with gentle Adirondack grades (no scary mountain passes). Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering propane, water, electric, slide-outs, and dump procedures. If you're still nervous, choose a smaller Class B campervan or a 22 to 25-foot travel trailer, much easier to maneuver than a Class A. Pro tip: practice a few right turns and parking moves in the Walmart lot in Herkimer (45 minutes south) before heading into town. By the time you reach McCauley Mountain Road, you'll feel like a pro.
dmv.ny.gov/about-dmv/drivers-manual-practice-testsWhat happens if something breaks down during my Old Forge RV trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat on Route 28 near Thendara or the generator quits at Eighth Lake Campground, one phone call dispatches help. The Old Forge area has reliable cell coverage in town and along main roads, though signal can drop on backcountry routes like the Moose River Plains. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip to help coordinate repairs if needed. Pro tip: your host knows the local service network in and around Old Forge and Utica, so loop them in early and most issues get resolved without derailing your Adirondack vacation.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take the RV on a road trip beyond Old Forge?
Absolutely, Old Forge is a perfect launch pad for an RV road trip from Old Forge through the Adirondacks and beyond. Popular routes include Lake Placid and the Olympic region (90 miles, 2 hours northeast), Niagara Falls (about 230 miles west), the Thousand Islands along the St. Lawrence River (130 miles north), Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame (75 miles south), and even Vermont's Green Mountains (about 3.5 hours east). Crossing into Canada is allowed with most hosts as long as you have your passport and notify them in advance for the insurance documentation. Traveling to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Just message your host before booking to confirm cross-border travel and any mileage adjustments.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat should I budget for fuel on my Adirondack RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your budget, but it's manageable. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A rigs get 6 to 8 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG). New York gas prices in the Adirondacks tend to run $0.20 to $0.40 above the state average, so fill up in Utica or Herkimer on your way north where prices are lower. For a typical 4-night trip with 200 miles of driving, budget $120 to $200 for fuel in a Class C. Pro tip: Stewart's Shops in Old Forge has reliable diesel and gas, and many campers stay put for days and explore by bike on the TOBIE Trail to save fuel.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground in Old Forge?
Book early, your future self will thank you. New York State DEC campgrounds (Nicks Lake, Eighth Lake, Limekiln Lake) open reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and July and August weekends often sell out within hours of release. For private parks like Old Forge Camping Resort and HTR Adirondacks, aim for 4 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends. Shoulder season (late May, September, early October) is much easier, often you can snag a site 2 to 3 weeks out. Insider tip: midweek availability is consistently better, and Sunday-to-Thursday rates at private campgrounds often run 20% lower than Friday-Saturday nights.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Old Forge?
Driving around Old Forge is genuinely pleasant for RVs. Route 28 is the main artery in and out, a wide two-lane state highway with gentle curves and modest grades through the Adirondacks. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk (the area has heavy deer activity), and stay alert for moose in spring and early summer near Moose River Plains. Black bears are common, so always secure food inside the RV at night. In winter (mid-November through March), Route 28 stays plowed but expect snow-packed conditions and bring chains if you're driving anything other than 4WD. Pro tip: avoid driving the Adirondack backroads after dark when possible, and use New York 511 (511ny.org) for real-time road conditions.
511ny.org/What amenities can I expect at Old Forge campgrounds?
Most campgrounds near Old Forge are well-equipped for RVs. Private parks like Old Forge Camping Resort and HTR Adirondacks offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer), hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi near the office, and dump stations. State-run DEC campgrounds like Nicks Lake and Eighth Lake have potable water spigots, vault or flush toilets, hot showers, and a central dump station, but no individual site hookups, so you'll be boondocking with full tanks. Where to dump in Old Forge: the public dump station at Nicks Lake Campground is open to non-registered campers for a small fee. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving any campground because backcountry fill stations are scarce in the Adirondacks.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/campingWhat's included inside the RV I rent?
Old Forge RVezy rentals come fully equipped so you can focus on the lakes, not the logistics. Expect a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware; a bathroom with toilet and shower; comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the rig; heating and air conditioning; and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Most rentals include linens, towels, basic dishes, and outdoor camp chairs. Many hosts add a generator (essential for boondocking in Moose River Plains), a TV, and sometimes a Wi-Fi hotspot, though signal in the deeper Adirondacks is hit-or-miss. Every listing has a complete amenities list, so you'll know exactly what's onboard before booking. Pro tip: pack layers since Adirondack nights drop into the 50s°F even in July.
dec.ny.gov/places/adirondack-parkWhat add-ons and pickup options do hosts in Old Forge offer?
Old Forge hosts make your trip easy with thoughtful add-ons. Common options include bike racks ($25 to $50 per trip, great for the TOBIE Trail), kayak or canoe carriers, camping chairs and outdoor rugs, generators ($25 to $50 per day), propane refills, linen and towel packages, and even pre-stocked pantry kits. Pickup is usually from the host's property in or near Old Forge, with a 30 to 60-minute walkthrough covering every system. Many hosts also offer drop-off and pickup at Old Forge Camping Resort or HTR Adirondacks for a delivery fee. Mileage policies vary by listing (most include 100 to 150 free miles per day). Pro tip: message the host before booking to bundle add-ons, you'll often get a better rate than adding them à la carte.
visitadirondacks.com/How do payments and the security deposit work for an Old Forge RV rental?
Payments on RVezy are simple and secure. Your card is charged when the booking is confirmed, and funds are held until your trip starts, so the host is paid after pickup. Security deposits are separate from the booking payment and typically range from $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV class. The deposit is placed as a temporary hold on your card shortly before pickup, not charged, and is released after the trip ends assuming no damage. To keep things smooth: take date-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and drop-off, return it at the agreed mileage and fuel level, and dump the tanks if your host requires it. Your Adirondack adventure stays stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Old Forge during winter for snowmobiling?
Yes, and winter is a genuinely magical time to rent an RV in Old Forge, NY, home to one of the largest groomed snowmobile trail networks in the East via the Town of Webb and connecting Adirondack systems. Some RVezy hosts offer four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and furnaces rated for cold temperatures. Old Forge Camping Resort offers winter seasonal options, and a few private parks in the area allow limited cold-weather stays. Expect overnight temperatures often between 10 degrees F and well below zero in January, so plan on shore power for electric heaters and bring extra propane for the furnace. Pro tip: filter for hosts who specifically advertise winterized RVs and confirm trail access with your campground before booking.
