Campgrounds near Ontario, New York
Ontario sits on the south shore of Lake Ontario in Wayne County, about a twenty-minute drive east of Rochester. The town gives RV travelers quick access to the lake, the Erie Canal corridor, and the western edge of the Finger Lakes region, making it a practical base for a multi-stop New York trip.
RV options in the area range from lakefront resorts to working-farm campgrounds and full-service parks. Rochester experiences a humid continental climate, marked by warm summers and cold winters, with precipitation spread fairly evenly throughout the year, and heavy lake-effect snow in winter. That pattern shapes the camping calendar: most private parks operate roughly from mid-spring through mid-fall, while state park campgrounds follow a similar seasonal window.
Nearby options include Twilight on the Erie RV Resort, Whispering Winds RV and Fun Center, Canandaigua / Rochester KOA Holiday, South Shore RV Park, and Nor-Win Farm and Campsite. Together they cover big-rig pull-throughs, tent-friendly sites, and family-focused resorts with pools and activities.
Things to do near Ontario
Lake Ontario is the main draw. Casey Park in town has swimming, fishing, and paddling, and the shoreline stretches west to Hamlin Beach State Park and east to Chimney Bluffs State Park, known for its clay spire formations. The Erie Canalway Trail runs just south of town, offering flat, family-friendly cycling and walking through Fairport, Pittsford, and Palmyra.
The Finger Lakes begin roughly thirty to forty minutes south. Canandaigua Lake, Sonnenberg Gardens, and the wineries along Seneca and Keuka lakes are all reachable as day trips. Rochester adds urban options: the Strong National Museum of Play, the Seneca Park Zoo, and the George Eastman Museum are popular rainy-day stops for families traveling by RV.

The prime RV window runs from late May through early October. The warmest month is typically July, with an average high of 82°F, while the coldest month is usually January, with average highs near 34°F. July and August are the busiest weeks at both private parks and state campgrounds, and lakefront sites often fill months in advance for weekends and holidays.
Late spring brings cool nights, blossoming orchards, and fewer crowds. Fall is a strong shoulder season: apple harvest peaks in September and October across Wayne County, and foliage color moves through the Finger Lakes in early to mid October. The wettest month is usually June, so early-summer trips should plan for occasional thunderstorms.
Winter camping is limited. Snow in Rochester usually begins around November and ends by April, and the area receives significant snowfall, averaging about 89 inches per year, driven by lake-effect bands off Lake Ontario. Most campgrounds close by late October and reopen in April or May.

How to book
New York State Parks campgrounds in the region, including Hamlin Beach and Fair Haven Beach, are reserved through the state's ReserveAmerica system. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, and popular lakefront and waterfront sites for summer weekends are typically claimed within minutes of the window opening.
Private parks such as Twilight on the Erie RV Resort, Whispering Winds RV and Fun Center, Canandaigua / Rochester KOA Holiday, South Shore RV Park, and Nor-Win Farm and Campsite each handle their own reservations by phone or through their websites. For summer holiday weekends, reserve two to three months out. For shoulder-season midweek stays, a week or two of lead time is usually enough.
What to expect
Terrain around Ontario is flat to gently rolling, with orchards, farmland, and short bluffs along the lakeshore. Roads leading to campgrounds are generally paved and RV-friendly, though some farm-based sites use gravel access lanes. Cell service is reliable across most of Wayne County and stronger closer to Rochester.
Biting insects, mainly mosquitoes and black flies, peak from late May into July, especially near marshes and the canal. Bring repellent and screens. Lake breezes keep shoreline sites cooler than inland parks by several degrees on hot afternoons.
Site mixes vary. Expect full hookups and pull-throughs at the larger resort-style parks, and a mix of water-and-electric, tent, and cabin sites at farm and state campgrounds. Generator hours and quiet hours are enforced at most parks.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Ontario, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Ontario, NY?
Good news: RV rental in Ontario, NY is genuinely affordable compared to what you'd pay near Rochester or in a big-city market. On RVezy, travel trailers typically run about $75 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from roughly $150 to $250 per night, and larger Class A coaches can run $200 to $400 per night. You can keep costs down by booking midweek, traveling in May or September (shoulder season on Lake Ontario), or filtering for travel trailers rather than motorized rigs. Pro tip for a cheap RV rental Ontario NY trip: pair a smaller trailer with a state park site at Hamlin Beach (about 25 minutes west) and you'll have a full weekend on the lake for well under $500.
parks.ny.gov/camping/fees-rates.aspxWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Ontario, NY?
Great news for first-time renters: a standard Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Ontario, NY, as long as the motorhome has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,000 pounds or less, which covers nearly every rental on RVezy. New York only requires an additional 'R' endorsement for rigs over 26,000 pounds or longer than 40 feet, and those are rare on the platform. You'll need to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the app. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you're set to roll along the Seaway Trail.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-driver-licenseIs there any protection or insurance included with my Ontario, NY RV rental?
Yes, every RV rental in Ontario, NY booked on RVezy automatically includes a protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Seaway Trail with real peace of mind. During checkout you (not the host) choose the protection level that fits your comfort, from Basic to Peace of Mind. Each plan provides meaningful financial coverage for damage to the RV during your trip. That means whether you are driving lakeshore roads to Chimney Bluffs State Park or parking overnight in Sodus Point, you are backed up the entire way. Pick your coverage tier at booking and you are ready to roll.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Ontario, NY RV trip?
Booking is genuinely low-risk. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy that applies to every reservation, and your booking confirmation shows the exact refund windows for your trip. Refund eligibility depends on how far in advance you cancel, and special circumstances like declared natural disasters may be handled separately by RVezy support. You can review the full policy any time in the RVezy Help Center. Pro tip: book early to lock in summer weekends at Hamlin Beach or Fair Haven, knowing the cancellation policy has your back if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Ontario, NY?
Absolutely, this is a great region for a pet-friendly RV rental Ontario NY adventure. Many RVezy hosts welcome dogs, and you can filter listings using the 'Pet-Friendly' filter to see them instantly. Most New York State Park campgrounds, including Hamlin Beach and Fair Haven Beach, allow pets on a 6-foot leash with proof of rabies vaccination (bring the paperwork, not just the tag). There's a two-pet maximum per site. Local favorites for your pup include the beach trails at Chimney Bluffs State Park and the Erie Canalway Trail, both within easy driving distance. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and you're all set.
parks.ny.gov/camping/things-to-knowCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Ontario, NY?
Yes, RV delivery Ontario NY is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if you've never driven a motorhome before. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to Lake Bluff RV Park in Wolcott, Hamlin Beach State Park, Fair Haven Beach State Park, or even your own driveway in Ontario, Webster, or Macedon. They'll level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system from the propane stove to the awning. You just show up and start your vacation. Look for the 'Delivery' filter on listings, then message the host to confirm distance and any delivery fee.
parks.ny.gov/parks/76/details.aspxHow far can I drive on my Ontario, NY RV rental, and are there mileage limits?
You've got plenty of room to roam. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, and many offer generous daily limits or even an RV rental with unlimited mileage option, perfect for an Ontario NY RV trip. From the town of Ontario you're 15 miles east of Rochester, about 35 miles west of Sodus Point, 75 miles to Syracuse, 90 miles to the Finger Lakes wine country around Seneca Lake, and roughly 145 miles to Niagara Falls. The mileage allowance and any per-mile overage rate are listed clearly on the listing page before you book. Pro tip: map your full route first, then filter for hosts whose mileage package matches your plans.
dot.ny.gov/display/programs/scenic-byways/seaway-trailWhat are the best campgrounds near Ontario, NY for an RV trip?
You are spoiled for choice along the southern shore of Lake Ontario. Top picks include Hamlin Beach State Park (about 25 minutes west, 264 sites with electric hookups and a sandy lake beach), Fair Haven Beach State Park (about 45 minutes east on Little Sodus Bay, electric sites and swimming), Lake Bluff RV Park in Wolcott (full-hookup sites near Chimney Bluffs State Park), and Cayuga Lake State Park (about an hour south in the Finger Lakes). New York State Park sites can be booked up to nine months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and lake-view sites disappear within minutes during summer. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the 9-month release at 8 AM for the best chance at a waterfront site.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time of year for RV camping in Ontario, NY?
The sweet spot for RV camping Ontario NY is mid-May through mid-October, with July and August being prime beach and swimming season on Lake Ontario (highs around 80°F, water temps in the upper 60s to low 70s). September and early October are a local favorite, warm days in the 60s and 70s, no crowds, apple harvest in full swing across Wayne County (the largest apple-producing county in New York), and stunning fall color along the Seaway Trail. Most state park campgrounds close by mid-October. Winter brings serious lake-effect snow, so most RVezy rentals operate May through October. Book your fall foliage weekend by July for the best selection.
weather.gov/buf/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay?
You'll do great, and you're not alone, first time renting an RV is exactly what RVezy is built for. Every host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, the freshwater and waste systems, propane, the awning, and the generator. You can message the host with questions before you even book, and 24/7 roadside assistance comes with every reservation. Ontario, NY is an especially friendly place to learn: Route 104 and the Seaway Trail are wide, flat, and lightly trafficked compared to Rochester's I-490 corridor. Pro tip: book a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer for your first trip, they drive much more like a large van than a bus.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/osss/repositoryWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking in Ontario, NY includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so a flat tire on Route 104, a dead battery at Chimney Bluffs, or a propane question at Fair Haven Beach is a quick phone call away. Your host is also your first line of support and usually only minutes away, since most rentals here are owned by locals in Wayne, Monroe, or Ontario County. The RVezy support team is available before, during, and after your trip through the app. Save the roadside number to your phone before you leave the driveway and you're set.
dot.ny.gov/portal/page/portal/programs/511Can I take my Ontario, NY RV rental across the border into Canada?
Cross-border travel into Canada is possible on some RVezy rentals, since Ontario, NY sits just a couple of hours from the Lewiston-Queenston, Peace Bridge, and Thousand Islands crossings. Because each host's insurance and protection coverage handles this differently, you must message the host before booking and get written approval inside the RVezy app. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental, as protection coverage does not extend there. Bring a passport or enhanced driver's license for the border, and budget about 2.5 hours to Niagara Falls, ON or 3.5 hours to Toronto. Confirm with your host first and you're ready for a true international RV road trip from Ontario NY.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/western-hemisphere-travel-initiativeHow much will I spend on gas for an Ontario, NY RV trip?
Easier to budget than you might think. Most travel trailers add minimal fuel cost since you're towing with your own vehicle; Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A coaches average 6 to 10 mpg. Gas prices in Wayne County usually track close to the New York State average (often around $3.30 to $3.80 per gallon recently). For a typical weekend loop, Ontario to Sodus Point to Chimney Bluffs to Hamlin Beach and back, you'll cover roughly 100 miles and spend about $40 to $60 in fuel on a Class C. Pro tip: fuel up at the Thruway exits in Rochester or Geneva, where stations tend to be a few cents cheaper than lakeshore towns.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Ontario, NY?
For the best campgrounds near Ontario NY, plan ahead but don't panic. New York State Park campgrounds (Hamlin Beach, Fair Haven Beach, Cayuga Lake, Sampson) open reservations exactly nine months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and waterfront sites for July and August weekends can vanish within minutes of the 8 AM release. For private parks like Lake Bluff RV Park or Yogi Bear's Jellystone in Mexico, NY, booking 2 to 4 months out is usually plenty. Midweek and shoulder-season trips (late May, early June, September) often have same-week openings. Pro tip: out-of-state visitors pay a small additional nightly fee at state parks, factor that into your budget.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Ontario, NY?
Driving here is refreshingly easy compared to most of the Northeast. State Route 104 (the Seaway Trail) is a flat, wide, two- and four-lane road that runs right through the town of Ontario, perfect for a motorhome rental Ontario NY. Traffic is light outside of Rochester rush hour on I-490 and I-590. The main things to watch for are lake-effect snow squalls from November through March (most rentals are seasonal for this reason), deer at dawn and dusk on rural roads like Furnace Road and Knickerbocker Road, and a 13-foot 6-inch statewide bridge clearance limit. Use NY 511 for real-time road conditions and you'll have a smooth drive.
511ny.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Ontario, NY?
You will be well taken care of. Most campgrounds near Ontario, NY offer 30/50-amp electric, water, picnic tables, fire rings, hot showers, and a dump station. Lake Bluff RV Park in Wolcott offers full-hookup sites (water, electric, sewer), while Hamlin Beach State Park has electric sites, a sandy Lake Ontario beach, and a centralized dump station. Fair Haven Beach State Park offers electric hookups and a fish-cleaning station. Most state parks also let day visitors use the dump station for a small fee. Pro tip: Wayne County state park campgrounds rarely have sewer at every site, so plan one mid-trip dump or choose a full-hookup private park.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What's actually inside an RV rental in Ontario, NY?
More than you might expect. A typical campervan rental Ontario NY or Class C motorhome on RVezy comes with a real bed (or two), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control, and seatbelted seating for the road. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, generator, solar, and outdoor camp chairs. Travel trailers offer the same interior amenities without the driving cab. Each listing has a full amenity checklist and photos so you know exactly what's inside before booking. Pro tip: filter by 'Sleeps' count and confirm seatbelt count matches your group, since not every seat is travel-rated.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/seat-beltsWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Ontario, NY?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons for an RV rental in Ontario, NY include linen and kitchen kits ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, propane refills, bike racks, generators, and pet cleaning fees. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on locally, given how many guests stay at Hamlin Beach or Lake Bluff. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Ontario, Webster, Walworth, or Macedon, with a 60- to 90-minute orientation. Mileage policies vary by listing, anywhere from 100 miles per night to unlimited, with overage fees clearly shown. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linen kit and you can literally arrive with just a suitcase.
waynecountytourism.com/How does payment and the security deposit work for an RVezy rental in Ontario, NY?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled inside the RVezy platform, so you never hand cash to the host. You pay by credit or debit card when you book, and the security deposit is placed as a separate pre-authorization hold (not a charge) on your card shortly before pickup. Deposit amounts vary by RV and are shown clearly on the listing. As long as you return the RV on time, with the agreed fuel level, and without damage beyond what the protection plan covers, the hold is released after your trip ends. Pro tip: take dated photos at pickup and dropoff, that is the single best way to protect your full deposit on any RV rental in Ontario, NY.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre there cold-weather RV rentals available in Ontario, NY?
Yes, though selection is smaller. Because the south shore of Lake Ontario sees serious lake-effect snow and overnight temperatures well below freezing from November through March, most RVezy hosts here run a May-through-October season. A handful of hosts offer four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and shore-power ready setups for shoulder-season trips into Letchworth State Park or the Finger Lakes wine trail. Look for listings that mention 'heated tanks' or 'four-season' in the description and message the host directly to confirm winter availability. Pro tip: late October fall foliage trips, before the deep freeze, are stunning along the Seaway Trail and rentals are easier to find than mid-summer.
