New York State Parks handle bookings through ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made for today and can be made up to 9 months in advance. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival, this applies to campsites only, and reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center, with walk-ins permitted on campsites only. For Whetstone Gulf specifically, sites fit smaller rigs. The campground features 56 wooded sites spread through the forest, with select sites offering electric hookups at 15, 30, or 50 amp service, and both back-in and pull-through configurations are available, though the maximum vehicle length is 30 feet. Private parks such as Kayuta Lake, Singing Waters, and Stysh's Brown Barn take reservations directly through their operators. Reservations are highly recommended. For summer weekends and holidays, book several months out.

What to expect

State park sites tend to be wooded and rustic, while private parks lean toward family amenities and full hookups. Stays at Whetstone Gulf are relatively short and self-contained. Facilities include hot showers, flush restrooms, an onsite laundry room, a dump station, and a playground. A camping party and their equipment may occupy a site for a maximum of 14 continuous nights, after which the party and equipment must leave the site and facility for 48 hours before registering again. Wildlife is common in the surrounding forest. Campers may see white-tailed deer, foxes, raccoons, coyotes, chipmunks, eagles, beavers, black bears, and rabbits.
