Camping near Sandy Creek, New York
Sandy Creek sits in northern Oswego County on New York's eastern Lake Ontario shore, minutes from the Salmon River and the Sandy Pond barrier-beach system. The area is a fishing destination first, drawing anglers from across the region to the Salmon River and Lake Ontario tributaries. That drives strong seasonal demand at RV parks and cabins along Route 13, County Route 15, and the lakeshore.
Most RV traffic clusters around Pulaski to the south and the Sandy Pond area to the northwest. Options within a short drive include Mid-River Motel and Campground, Stoney's Pineville Campground, Brennan Beach RV Resort, Fox Hollow Salmon River Lodge, and Streamside RV Park and Golf Course. Selkirk Shores State Park, located on Lake Ontario in the town of Richland in Oswego County, sits on a bluff overlooking the lake and is the main public campground in the area.
Most of the private campgrounds are seasonal, with peak demand during the fall salmon run. Rooms and sites in this area between mid-September and mid-October should be booked well in advance.
Things to do around Sandy Creek
Fishing anchors the trip calendar. The Salmon River holds Chinook and Coho salmon, steelhead, brown trout, and smallmouth bass, drawing anglers from across the Northeast. A New York State fishing license is required, and stretches of the river run through private property with access fees.
Beyond fishing, Selkirk Shores State Park offers a mix of activities. Park activities include biking, boating, fishing, hiking, participating in recreation programs, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling in winter, picnicking, and camping. Small boats can be launched from the Pine Grove site, and larger boats from Mexico Point on the Little Salmon River, and summer hiking and biking trails are used in the winter by cross-country skiers, snowshoers, and snowmobilers. Sandy Island Beach State Park, a short drive north, has a swimming beach and dunes on Lake Ontario. Families also use the RV base for day trips to Sackets Harbor and the Thousand Islands region.

The camping calendar is short and weather-driven. The campground at Selkirk Shores State Park operates seasonally from mid-May through late October. Private RV parks along the Salmon River generally mirror this window.
Summer brings warm days on Lake Ontario, swimming, and full campgrounds. Summer brings the best conditions for swimming, boating, and beach use, with typical highs of 70 to 85°F and nighttime lows in the mid-50s to low-60s, and lake water warms enough for comfortable swimming. Cabins book tightly in this window: cabins require a 7-night minimum stay during peak season, roughly late June through late August.
Fall is the marquee season for anglers, with the Salmon River peak typically running from mid-September into mid-October depending on flows and rainfall. Winter is quiet: Sandy Creek averages 146 inches of snow per year, and heavy lake-effect snow closes most private RV parks, shifting use to snowmobiling and ice fishing.

How to book
State-park sites at Selkirk Shores go through the New York State Parks system. Reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival, and this applies to campsites only. Reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 9 months in advance, so travelers targeting Labor Day or the salmon run should book the day the window opens.
Private parks such as Brennan Beach RV Resort, Stoney's Pineville Campground, Mid-River Motel and Campground, Fox Hollow Salmon River Lodge, and Streamside RV Park and Golf Course each handle their own reservations by phone or their operator websites. For any weekend between mid-September and mid-October, expect to book many months ahead.
What to expect on site
Sites in this corridor range from wooded state-park loops without water hookups to full-service private RV resorts. Water hookups are not available at individual sites at Selkirk Shores, so first-time visitors should fill their tanks before parking, and the park offers boat launch sites, campsites, dumping stations, food concessions, picnic areas, and restrooms with showers. Private parks near the Salmon River typically offer 30- and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups, plus fish-cleaning stations geared to the fall angler crowd.
Cell service is generally adequate along Interstate 81 and thins out on side roads. Expect strong lake breezes, mosquitoes near wetlands in early summer, and rapid weather changes off Lake Ontario. Bring extra layers even in July: nights on the shore run cool. During salmon season, riverside parks fill with anglers on early schedules, so families looking for quiet should target lakeshore parks instead of river-front lodges.

RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. After that window, your refund depends on how far out from your trip you cancel, with extra flexibility built in for events like severe weather, which matter on the Lake Ontario snowbelt. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits. Pro tip: book your Sandy Creek RV trip as early as you can to secure salmon-season weekends in September, then if plans shift, you still have the grace period to adjust without penalty. Full policy details are available on the RVezy Help Center.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Sandy Creek RV rental?

Once you arrive, dogs are welcome at Selkirk Shores State Park campsites (max two pets, 6-foot leash, current rabies proof required) and on the trails at Sandy Island Beach State Park day-use areas. The 17-mile Eastern Lake Ontario Dune and Wetland System gives your pup miles of sandy shoreline to sniff and splash. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and ask about their cleaning preferences, most local hosts are dog owners themselves and happy to accommodate.

Yes, and it is a game-changer for first-timers. You skip the stress of towing or maneuvering a big rig down State Route 3, and you arrive to find everything ready to go. Delivery fees vary by distance, but most hosts within 25 miles of Sandy Creek offer reasonable flat rates. Pro tip: filter for Delivery on the listing page, then message hosts your exact campsite loop and number so they can confirm access and any state park check-in requirements.

dot.ny.gov/indexWhere are the best campgrounds near Sandy Creek, NY?
You are spoiled for choice in this corner of Oswego County. Top picks for RV camping Sandy Creek include: Selkirk Shores State Park (about 7 miles south, campsites with electric hookups on a Lake Ontario bluff), Sandy Island Beach State Park (day-use, part of the rare freshwater dune system), Brennan Beach RV Resort in Pulaski (full hookups, pool, on Lake Ontario), and Southwick Beach State Park (just north in Woodville/Henderson, with a long sand beach and 112 sites). Pro tip: New York state park sites release 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, so set a reminder for prime summer weekends.
parks.ny.gov/visit/state-parks/selkirk-shores-state-parkWhen is the best time for an RV trip from Sandy Creek?
The sweet spot is mid-May through mid-October, and each window offers something different. Selkirk Shores State Park opens its camping season on May 15 with the Acorn and Bird loops running through October 25. Summer (late June to August) brings 75 to 82 F days, swimmable Lake Ontario water, and peak beach time at Sandy Island Beach. September is the local insider's favorite: cooler 60 to 70 F days, fall foliage, and the world-famous Salmon River run that draws anglers from across North America to nearby Pulaski. Winters are snowy and cold (lake-effect snow can pile up fast), so most hosts pause rentals from November through April. Pro tip: book a September week and you'll catch foliage, salmon, and shoulder-season pricing all at once.
parks.ny.gov/visit/state-parks/selkirk-shores-state-parkI've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You've got this, and Sandy Creek is a forgiving place to learn. First time renting an RV? Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation and walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, hookups, leveling, awning, and the dump station, so you're never handed keys and left guessing. The roads around Sandy Creek are also beginner-friendly: State Route 3 is wide and rural, I-81 is straight and well-marked, and traffic is light outside Syracuse. If you'd rather skip the driving entirely, choose a host offering delivery and they'll bring the rig to your campsite. Pro tip: ask your host to record a quick video of the walkthrough on your phone, you'll be glad to have it when you need to dump tanks for the first time.
dot.ny.gov/indexWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own out there. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing if needed, anywhere from the shoulder of I-81 to a remote site near Salmon River Reservoir. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app for questions about quirks specific to their RV (most local hosts respond within minutes). RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host contact in your phone before you leave the driveway, cell service can be spotty in the wooded areas west of I-81 toward Lake Ontario.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Sandy Creek, NY?
An RV road trip from Sandy Creek puts some of the Northeast's best scenery within easy reach. Top routes include: the Thousand Islands and Alexandria Bay (75 miles north via I-81, perfect for a long weekend on the St. Lawrence), Adirondack Park's western gateway at Old Forge (90 miles east, lakes and hiking galore), Niagara Falls (190 miles west via I-90, doable in a day), the Finger Lakes wine trail around Seneca and Cayuga Lakes (90 to 120 miles south), and Watkins Glen State Park (140 miles south). Cross-border trips into Canada (Ottawa is just 130 miles away) are sometimes allowed, message your host before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals.
dot.ny.gov/indexWhat should I budget for fuel on my Sandy Creek RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but it's easier to estimate than you'd think. Class B campervans around Sandy Creek average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes get 10 to 14 mpg, and Class A motorhomes get 7 to 10 mpg. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but typically drop its mpg by 30 to 40 percent. Gas prices in Oswego County tend to track slightly above the national average, with the cheapest fill-ups usually at the truck stops along I-81 near Pulaski. Pro tip: for a typical 300-mile loop (Sandy Creek to Thousand Islands and back), budget around $90 to $140 for fuel in a Class C, and download GasBuddy to find the best price along Route 3 and I-81.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Sandy Creek?
Earlier is always better here, especially for the state parks. Selkirk Shores State Park and Sandy Island Beach State Park release reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica (call 1-800-456-2267 or book online), and summer weekends plus September salmon-run dates can sell out within hours of the booking window opening. Private campgrounds like Colonial Court and Brennan Beach RV Resort typically need 1 to 3 months of lead time for peak season. Same-day state park reservations are accepted until 3 PM if sites remain, and walk-ins are permitted. Pro tip: if you're targeting a holiday weekend, set a calendar alert for exactly 9 months out at 8 AM Eastern, that's when sites drop and locals are watching.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What are the driving conditions like around Sandy Creek?
Driving here is genuinely relaxed compared to most of New York. Sandy Creek sits along State Route 3, a two-lane lake road that's flat, wide, and lightly traveled outside summer weekends. I-81 runs just inland and connects you north to Watertown and south to Syracuse without any toll plazas. The one thing to watch for: this is the heart of New York's snowbelt, where lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario can drop several feet in a single storm from late November through March, so most hosts pause rentals in winter. Summer thunderstorms can also kick up quickly off the lake. Pro tip: check the National Weather Service Buffalo forecast the morning of any travel day, and avoid I-81 around Syracuse during weekday rush hour.
weather.gov/buf/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Sandy Creek?
Local campgrounds are well set up for a comfortable RV camping Sandy Creek experience. Selkirk Shores State Park offers electric hookups (no water at the site, but a fresh-water fill-up station is on-site), dump stations, hot showers, flush restrooms, and a playground. Generators are permitted only 9 to 11 AM and 5 to 9 PM. Private parks like Brennan Beach RV Resort offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), pools, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Colonial Court has grassy sites, a rec hall with Wi-Fi, and a playground. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before leaving Sandy Creek if you're heading to a state park, and plan your dump stop for the way out, the Selkirk Shores dump station is right near the exit road.
parks.ny.gov/visit/state-parks/selkirk-shores-state-parkWhat's inside a typical Sandy Creek RV rental?
Expect a fully equipped home on wheels. A motorhome rental Sandy Creek typically includes a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds (most sleep 4 to 8), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Many local listings also include a generator, outdoor awning, TV, and Bluetooth stereo. A campervan rental Sandy Creek will be more compact but still includes sleeping space, a small kitchen, and often a portable toilet. Wi-Fi isn't standard, cell hotspots work best. Pro tip: review the listing's full amenities list and photos, and message the host to confirm linens, cookware, and camp chairs are included before you pack.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.93What add-ons and pickup options are available?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Common add-ons for an RV rental Sandy Creek include camp chairs and tables, bedding and towel packages, generator rentals, kitchen kits, kayak or bike racks, and pet packages, each priced individually by the host. Pickup is typically at the host location near Sandy Creek, Pulaski, or Mannsville, with delivery available from many owners directly to Selkirk Shores, Sandy Island Beach, or a private property. Most hosts offer afternoon pickup and late-morning drop-off, and flexible times can often be arranged by message. Pro tip: ask about a generator add-on if you are heading to a state park, the electric hookups handle most needs, but a generator gives you backup for that morning coffee maker.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sandy%20Creek%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure through RVezy. You pay the booking total (rental, fees, protection, and any add-ons) at the time of booking using a major credit card, with no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is held on your card separately from your booking payment before your trip starts and released back to you after drop-off, assuming the RV is returned in the condition it left. Deposit amounts vary by listing but are clearly shown before you confirm. Pro tip: avoid deposit issues by taking time-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at both pickup and drop-off, including the odometer, fuel gauge, and waste tanks.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I RV in Sandy Creek during the winter or shoulder seasons?
Spring and fall are absolutely doable, and they're a local secret. April through mid-May and mid-October through early November offer crisp air, fewer crowds, and great salmon and steelhead fishing on the nearby Salmon River. Some Sandy Creek hosts list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks and propane furnaces designed for chilly nights, just filter your search and message hosts to confirm cold-weather capability. Winter rentals (December through March) are limited because of heavy lake-effect snow, but a few hosts offer rigs for snowmobile trips at Selkirk Shores' 52C and Lakeshore Trails. Pro tip: for shoulder-season trips, ask about shore power compatibility and bring extra propane, you'll burn through it faster heating the cabin overnight.
