Campgrounds and RV parks near SUNY Oswego, NY

The lake sets the agenda. Sandy beaches, swimming, and paddling anchor most family stays, and the park features 1,500 feet of beautiful sandy beach including 600 feet of guarded swimming area at Fair Haven Beach State Park. Sterling Pond and Sterling Creek offer flatwater for canoes and kayaks kept off the big lake. Fishing is a headline draw. Lake Ontario, Little Sodus Bay, and the Salmon River hold trophy salmon, trout, walleye, and bass through the warm months. Anglers based at Lakeview or Bluff at Fair Haven Beach State Park can walk to shoreline access, while those heading north toward Pulaski get closer to Salmon River tributaries. On shore, expect hiking trails, a lighthouse and harbor walk in downtown Oswego, an 18-hole golf course near Fair Haven, and orchards, cider mills, and farm stands within an easy drive.

The camping season on the Lake Ontario shore is compact. Most private and state park campgrounds open in mid-May and close in mid- to late October, with peak demand from late June through Labor Day. July and August deliver the warmest lake temperatures for swimming, the longest days, and the steadiest weather, but they also bring the tightest availability. Weekends fill fastest, especially around the Fourth of July and Labor Day. Late spring and early fall are quieter on the calendar. May and June can still be cool and damp off the lake, with fog common in the mornings. September brings warm days, cooler nights, and strong fall fishing runs on tributaries feeding Lake Ontario. Winter shuts down camping loops entirely, but winter snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and ice fishing are very popular at Fair Haven Beach State Park for day-use visitors.

Site styles vary. Private parks near Oswego tend to offer full or partial hookups, longer pull-throughs, and RV-friendly amenities such as laundry and dump stations. State park loops lean rustic: at Selkirk Shores, all sites have electric hookups (30 or 50 amp), and a newer dump station with potable water serves the campground. Water hookups are not available at individual sites, so first-time visitors should fill their tanks before parking. Expect similar patterns at Fair Haven Beach State Park, where campgrounds consist of 46 electric sites and 138 non-electric sites. Pets are welcome at most campgrounds with standard rules. At New York State Parks, a maximum of two pets are allowed in campsites and day use areas unless prohibited by sign or directive. Pets are to be supervised at all times and either be crated or on a leash not more than 6-feet in length. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Oswego and thinner in wooded loops east of town.
