Campgrounds near Wilmington, New York
Wilmington sits at the base of Whiteface Mountain in the northern Adirondacks, along the West Branch of the Ausable River and roughly ten miles east of Lake Placid. It is a compact mountain town organized around outdoor recreation, with the Wilmington Wild Forest to the north and the Sentinel Range Wilderness to the south. For RV renters, it functions as a quieter basecamp than Lake Placid itself, with quicker access to the Whiteface Veterans' Memorial Highway, High Falls Gorge, and Adirondack High Peaks trailheads.
Campgrounds in the immediate area range from full-hookup private parks to more rustic riverside sites. Wilmington / North Pole KOA Holiday and Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday are the two closest full-service options, with RV sites, cabins, and camp stores. Douglas Resort and Campground, Cascade Acres, and Magic Pines Family Campground offer additional private-park capacity in the surrounding valley.
Most private parks accept larger rigs, though wooded sections have overhanging branches that reward slow maneuvering.
Things to do near Wilmington
Whiteface Mountain is the defining attraction. In summer, the Cloudsplitter Gondola runs to the top of Little Whiteface, and the Veterans' Memorial Highway climbs to a summit parking area with a short tunnel and elevator to the top. In winter, Whiteface is a full-service alpine ski area with the greatest vertical drop east of the Rockies at 3,430 feet.
High Falls Gorge offers a short walk over bridges above waterfalls on the West Branch of the Ausable River. The river itself is a well-known fly-fishing water for brown and rainbow trout. Local trails handle mountain biking at multiple skill levels.
Lake Placid, about ten miles away, adds the 1932 and 1980 Olympic venues, Mirror Lake paddling and beach access, and the Olympic Sports Complex bobsled and biathlon facilities at Mt Van Hoevenberg.

The private-park camping season generally runs from late spring through mid-fall, matching the frost-free window in this part of the Adirondacks. Wilmington / North Pole KOA Holiday, Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday, Douglas Resort and Campground, Cascade Acres, and Magic Pines Family Campground typically follow that pattern, with some sites and cabins available at the shoulders when weather cooperates. The nearby DEC campground at Wilmington Notch operates from early May into mid-October.
Summer is the busiest stretch. July and August bring warm days, cool nights, and heavy demand around the Lake Placid Ironman weekend in late July, when nearby sites can be booked out months in advance. September and early October deliver reliable fall foliage, cooler nights, and lighter crowds, though weekends still fill for peak color.
Winter shifts activity to skiing at Whiteface and Nordic trails around Lake Placid. Most RV parks close for the season, and travelers should confirm winterization schedules before booking a late-season or early-spring trip. Mud season in April can leave unpaved sites soft.
How to book a campsite near Wilmington
Private parks in the Wilmington area, including Wilmington / North Pole KOA Holiday, Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday, Douglas Resort and Campground, Cascade Acres, and Magic Pines Family Campground, take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. KOA properties also book through the KOA reservation system. For Ironman weekend, foliage weekends, and major holidays, sites at the closer parks commonly fill several months out.
State-run options in the surrounding Adirondacks, such as the DEC campground at Wilmington Notch, book through ReserveAmerica. The DEC reservation window allows bookings up to nine months in advance of arrival, and DEC campgrounds accept same-day reservations until 5 p.m. on the day of arrival. Walk-ins are not permitted at DEC campgrounds; all stays must be reserved.
What to expect on the ground
Cell service is inconsistent once you leave Route 86, and satellite TV coverage can be blocked by tall pines at wooded sites. Bring paper directions as a backup. Full hookups are common at private parks; DEC campgrounds in the surrounding Forest Preserve are more rustic and typically do not offer electric, water, or sewer at the site, though Wilmington Notch has flush toilets, hot showers, and a trailer dump station.
Black bears are active throughout the region. Store food and scented items inside the RV or in provided bear-resistant containers, and follow each campground's specific bear protocols. New York's firewood regulation restricts moving untreated firewood more than fifty miles from its source, so plan to buy wood locally.
Biting insects peak from late spring into early summer. Evenings are cool at elevation even in midsummer, so pack layers regardless of the daytime forecast.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Wilmington, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Wilmington, NY?
RV rental in Wilmington, NY is one of the most affordable ways to experience the Adirondacks, with most travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night and Class C motorhomes typically ranging from $175 to $295 per night on RVezy. Pricing depends on size, season, and add-ons like generators or bike racks. To find a cheap RV rental in Wilmington, target shoulder dates in mid-May, early June, or late September when Whiteface skiers have gone home and summer crowds haven't peaked. Booking three to four months ahead of Ironman Lake Placid weekend or peak fall foliage (the first three weeks of October) locks in the best rates. Pro tip: filter by Delivery to skip pickup logistics and let the host handle setup at your campground.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wilmington%2C%20New%20YorkDo I need a special license to drive an RV in New York?
Good news: your regular Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Wilmington, NY for the vast majority of rigs on RVezy. New York only requires an R endorsement for personal-use motorhomes with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and almost every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on the platform falls well under that limit. You must be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID during booking, so there's no extra paperwork. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set to explore the Whiteface Region.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/new-york-state-learner-permit-and-driver-license-class-descriptionsIs my RV rental protected if something goes wrong on the trip?
Yes, every RV rental in Wilmington, NY booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right into the booking, so you're covered from the moment you hit NY-86. The protection plan helps cover most damages to the vehicle during your trip, giving you real financial peace of mind without the headache of arranging it yourself. You choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), so you can pick the tier that fits your comfort level and budget. Hosts can't downgrade what you select. Bottom line: book confidently, point the rig toward Whiteface Mountain, and know help is one phone call away if you need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Wilmington RV trip?
Plans change, and RVezy makes it low-risk to book your Wilmington, NY RV trip. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, which includes a money-back grace period right after booking plus partial refund windows depending on how far out from your trip you cancel. Natural disasters and certain unforeseen events are also factored in, which matters in an area where early-season snow or a Lake Placid event reschedule could affect plans. You'll see the exact terms during checkout. Pro tip: if Adirondack weather looks dicey, message your host first about shifting dates by a few days. Many are flexible with date changes outside the cancellation framework.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip to Wilmington?
Absolutely, the Adirondacks are a dog's dream and pet-friendly RV rental in Wilmington, NY is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see hosts who welcome four-legged passengers, sometimes with a small cleaning fee. Once you arrive, Wilmington Notch Campground allows leashed dogs (six-foot leash max) with proof of a current rabies vaccination, and the Flume Trails and Ausable River paths are perfect for off-leash-style adventures on a long lead. High Falls Gorge also permits leashed dogs on the trail system. Pro tip: pack a copy of your dog's rabies certificate; New York State DEC campgrounds require it at check-in.
dec.ny.gov/places/wilmington-notch-campground-and-day-use-areaCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Wilmington?
Yes, RV delivery in Wilmington is one of the best ways to skip the learning curve, especially if you're flying into Plattsburgh or Burlington and don't want to drive a 30-foot rig down NY-86 right away. Many RVezy hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome rental in Wilmington directly at Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday, Wilmington Notch Campground, or North Pole Resort and walk you through hookups, slide-outs, and the propane system before they leave. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $5 per mile from the host's location. Filter by Delivery on RVezy, message a few hosts with your dates and campsite, and you'll have the RV waiting for you when you arrive.

Niagara Falls is a longer haul at about 380 miles west, making it a great two-leg trip with an overnight in Syracuse or the Finger Lakes. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wilmington%2C%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds near Wilmington, NY?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Wilmington. Wilmington Notch Campground, run by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) at 4953 NY-86, sits beside the Ausable River at the base of Whiteface and accommodates RVs (no hookups) with about 50 sites. Lake Placid/Whiteface Mtn. KOA Holiday at 5591 NY-86 offers full hookups for larger rigs plus riverside sites. North Pole Resort and Campground welcomes big rigs on the Ausable River, and Camp Whiteface Mountain rounds out the area with spacious sites near Whiteface and Lake Placid. Book by February for July and August stays, which sell out fast.
dec.ny.gov/places/wilmington-notch-campground-and-day-use-areaWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Wilmington?
Wilmington truly is a four-season destination, but late June through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Wilmington. Summer highs sit in the comfortable 70s to low 80s°F with cool 50s°F nights, perfect for sleeping with the windows open. Fall foliage peaks roughly the last week of September through the second week of October when the maples around Whiteface explode in color. Winter is a snowy wonderland for Whiteface skiers (lows can drop to 6°F or below), and several hosts offer four-season RVs with heated tanks. Local insider tip: Ironman Lake Placid weekend in late July books out a year in advance, so reserve your RV and campsite together as early as possible.
forecast.weather.gov/zipcity.php?inputstring=Wilmington%2CNYCan I rent an RV in winter for skiing at Whiteface?
Yes, winter RV rental in Wilmington is absolutely a thing, and it's a fun way to experience Whiteface Mountain, which hosted the 1980 Olympic alpine events. Look for RVezy listings labeled four-season or winterized; these have heated holding tanks, insulated underbellies, and reliable propane furnaces that handle Adirondack lows in the single digits. Lake Placid/Whiteface Mtn. KOA stays partially open year-round, and many private RV sites in the area offer plowed access with 30/50-amp shore power so you can run electric heaters without draining your batteries. Pro tip: ask your host to top off the propane tanks before pickup and confirm the freshwater tank is winter-ready, because frozen lines are the only real risk in February.
dec.ny.gov/places/wilmington-notch-campground-and-day-use-areaI've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in the Adirondacks?
First time renting an RV? You're in great hands in Wilmington. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup covering the propane system, water hookups, slide-outs, leveling, and dump procedures, so you won't be left guessing. The roads around Wilmington (NY-86 and NY-9N) are wide, scenic, and well-maintained with gentle grades, which makes them ideal for beginners. The Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway is the one route to think twice about with a large rig because of its 8% grade and tight switchbacks; consider parking at the base and taking the gondola instead. Pro tip: message your host with any questions before pickup. Many will send a video walkthrough so you arrive feeling prepared.
dot.ny.gov/What happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on NY-86 or a dead battery at Wilmington Notch is handled with a single phone call. The dispatch network covers tows, jump-starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and tire changes across the Adirondack region. Your host is also a quick text away for questions about quirks specific to their RV. Cell service can be spotty in the Notch and along the Ausable, so download offline maps before you leave Lake Placid. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number in your phone before pickup so you're ready for anything.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take the RV across the border into Canada from Wilmington?
Cross-border trips to Canada are possible from Wilmington, and Montreal is only about 130 miles north (roughly 2.5 hours via I-87 and the Champlain border crossing), making it a tempting add-on. However, you must get written permission from your host before crossing, because insurance and the protection plan only extend to Canada when the host approves it in advance. Message the host directly from the listing page before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: bring your passport, vehicle registration, and a signed host permission letter to make the Lacolle/Champlain crossing smooth. Border agents may ask to see all three.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Adirondack RV trip?
Fuel is the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's easy to estimate. Class C motorhomes around Wilmington average 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 16 to 20 MPG, and a truck pulling a travel trailer typically delivers 10 to 13 MPG. New York's average regular gasoline price has hovered around $3.00 to $3.10 per gallon recently, with stations in Wilmington and Lake Placid often running 10 to 20 cents higher than the state average because of the remote location. For a typical 300-mile loop from Wilmington to Lake Placid, Ausable Chasm, and Saranac Lake, plan on $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Plattsburgh or Au Sable Forks on your way in for cheaper gas.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=NYHow far in advance should I book a campground near Wilmington?
Reserve as early as you can, because the best campgrounds near Wilmington, NY fill up fast in summer. The New York State DEC opens reservations for Wilmington Notch Campground up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica (or by calling 1-800-456-2267), and prime weekends in July and August are often gone by March. Lake Placid/Whiteface Mtn. KOA Holiday and North Pole Resort book directly through their own websites and follow a similar pattern. For Ironman Lake Placid weekend in late July, book the moment reservations open. Pro tip: snag your campground first, then book your RV rental in Wilmington, NY on RVezy. It's much easier to find an RV than a campsite during peak weekends.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/wilmington-notch/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NY&parkId=561What are the local driving conditions like around Wilmington?
Driving an RV around Wilmington is genuinely pleasant most of the year. NY-86 and NY-9N are two-lane scenic highways with wide shoulders, moderate curves, and frequent pullouts for photo stops along the Ausable River. The biggest things to watch for are deer (especially at dawn and dusk), the steep Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway (skip it in rigs over 25 feet), and occasional fog in the Notch on cool mornings. Winter brings snow and ice from late November through March, so check 511ny.org before heading out. Local insider tip: avoid driving through Lake Placid's Main Street with anything over 28 feet during Ironman or Olympic Training Center events. Loop around on NY-73 instead to save yourself the headache.
511ny.org/What amenities do campgrounds near Wilmington offer for RVs?
Local campgrounds are well-equipped for RV camping in Wilmington. Wilmington Notch Campground (NY State DEC) offers hot showers, flush toilets, a trailer dump station, recycling, picnic tables, and fire pits at each of its roughly 50 sites; it doesn't have full hookups, so plan to use your fresh and gray tanks. Lake Placid/Whiteface Mtn. KOA Holiday provides pull-thru and back-in sites with full water, electric (30/50-amp), and sewer hookups for rigs up to 45 feet, plus laundry and a camp store. North Pole Resort welcomes big rigs with full hookups on the Ausable. Pro tip: New York's firewood rule prohibits bringing untreated wood from more than 50 miles away, so buy local at the campground.
dec.ny.gov/places/wilmington-notch-campground-and-day-use-areaWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Wilmington?
RVezy rentals in Wilmington come ready to camp. Expect a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, cookware, dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower, beds for the listed sleep count, a dinette that often converts to extra sleeping space, air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger (always check the listing for the exact seatbelt count). Most rigs include a TV and many offer a generator or solar setup for boondocking. WiFi is hit or miss in the Adirondacks because of mountain terrain, so don't count on it at Wilmington Notch. Pro tip: ask the host about a Starlink add-on if you need to work from the road during your Adirondacks campervan rental in Wilmington.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wilmington%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect?
RVezy hosts in Wilmington offer a great range of add-ons to customize your trip: bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, kayak racks, generators (often $25 to $50 per day), portable grills, and even pre-stocked propane. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Wilmington, Jay, or Lake Placid, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Mileage policies typically allow 100 to 150 free miles per day with overage fees around $0.35 to $0.50 per mile, though some hosts offer unlimited mileage packages. Pro tip: if you're doing a short Whiteface to Lake Placid loop you'll easily stay within base mileage, but a Montreal side trip is worth adding the unlimited package upfront.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wilmington%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, so there's no awkward cash handoff in a Wilmington parking lot. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is held separately from your booking payment before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back clean, fueled, and undamaged. The renter protection plan you selected reduces your out-of-pocket exposure if something happens. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick video of the interior and exterior at both pickup and drop-off. It's the single best way to avoid any deposit disputes on your family RV trip in Wilmington.
