Campgrounds and RV parks near Burgaw, NC

The biggest public-land draw within reach of Burgaw is Carolina Beach State Park on Pleasure Island, about 45 minutes south. The park sits in New Hanover County about 12 miles south of Wilmington, is home to the Venus flytrap, and is known for Sugarloaf Dune, a 50-foot dune that once served as a navigational marker for river pilots, plus three limesink ponds. The park's marina provides access to the Cape Fear River and the Intracoastal Waterway for boaters and anglers, and several miles of trails wind through wooded and coastal habitats. Closer in, Lake Leamon Campground offers swimming, fishing, and paddling on a small lake, and downtown Burgaw itself has a historic train depot, small shops, and the annual NC Blueberry Festival in June. Wilmington's Riverwalk, the Battleship North Carolina, and Wrightsville Beach are all easy day trips from any of the nearby parks.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of coastal North Carolina. Wilmington has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and cool winters, and summertime heat can become excessive when high humidity accompanies hot temperatures. Sea breezes bring cooler air onshore during most afternoons in spring and summer, and the transition seasons of fall and spring often have pleasant temperatures and comfortable humidity. Freezing temperatures occur regularly between mid-November and mid-March, but severe or long-lasting cold is very rare. Summer is peak season for the Topsail and Wrightsville beach parks, and inland lakes see steady weekend crowds. Wilmington receives plentiful rainfall throughout the year, the wettest season is summer when locally heavy thunderstorms occur many afternoons and evenings, and hurricanes occasionally bring flooding rain, especially during late summer or fall. RV travelers should track National Hurricane Center forecasts from roughly August through October, when tropical systems can force coastal campground evacuations. Winter is mild but damp, with quieter parks and easier availability. Lake Leamon Campground and most private parks in the area operate year-round.

Expect flat, sandy pine-forest terrain across most parks in the area. Sites at the private parks generally offer water and electric, many with sewer and Wi-Fi, while state-park sites are a mix of hookup and non-hookup loops. Bathhouses, dump stations, and laundry are standard at the larger private parks. Insects and humidity are the main comfort issues. Mosquitoes, gnats, and biting flies are common near creeks and marshes from late spring through early fall, so bring repellent and screens. Afternoon thunderstorms are frequent in summer. Facilities vary widely between parks. Larger resorts and KOAs offer pools, playgrounds, and camp stores, while smaller family-run parks like Lake Leamon Campground focus on lake access and basic bathhouses rather than resort amenities. Pets are typically welcome on leash, and grocery, fuel, and RV supply stops are easy to reach from Burgaw and Wilmington.
