Campgrounds and RV parks near Burnsville, NC

Burnsville sits in Yancey County in western North Carolina, roughly 45 minutes north of Asheville and within a short drive of Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway, Pisgah National Forest, and the South Toe River corridor. Campground options in the area mix National Park Service sites along the Parkway with private riverside parks and rafting resorts. Crabtree Falls Campground occupies a 253-acre recreation area along the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 339.5, though it remains closed through the 2026 season due to Hurricane Helene damage. Private options include Living Waters Campground and Spruce Pine Campground, which enforces a week-minimum stay. To the north across the state line, Nolichucky Gorge Campground and USA Raft Adventure Resort sit along the Nolichucky River near Erwin, Tennessee. Smaller Class B campervans and 24-foot Class C rigs handle mountain roads much more easily than a 35-foot Class A. Travelers new to the area often prefer US-19E and US-19W to the narrower Blue Ridge Parkway for a first drive.

Public campgrounds on the Blue Ridge Parkway are booked through Recreation.gov, with reservations opening up to six months in advance of the arrival date. A share of sites at most Parkway campgrounds is held for first-come, first-served walk-ups, and those cannot be tracked online; they must be claimed in person at the campground kiosk. Mount Mitchell State Park reservations go through the North Carolina State Parks system on ReserveAmerica, also on a six-month rolling window. Private campgrounds including Nolichucky Gorge Campground, USA Raft Adventure Resort, Living Waters Campground, and Spruce Pine Campground are booked directly by phone or through each operator's website. For summer and fall weekends, booking as soon as the window opens is the safest approach.
