Campgrounds near Cary, North Carolina
Cary sits in North Carolina's Research Triangle, with three large state park systems within a short drive that handle nearly all RV camping in the area. William B Umstead State Park lies immediately north of town between Cary, Raleigh, and Durham, offering the closest developed campground to the city. Jordan Lake State Recreation Area spreads across several access areas to the west and southwest, and Falls Lake State Recreation Area covers a large reservoir to the north and northeast.
Most RV sites in the region are run by North Carolina State Parks and booked through the state's ReserveAmerica portal. Options range from full-hookup family sites to primitive walk-up loops, with hookup sites concentrated at Crosswinds - Jordan Lake State Recreation Area, Poplar Point - Jordan Lake State Recreation Area, Holly Point - Falls Lake State Recreation Area, and Rolling View - Falls Lake State Recreation Area.
The area works well as a base for families: campgrounds are forested, sit on large reservoirs with swim beaches and boat ramps, and remain within 30 to 45 minutes of Cary's restaurants, groceries, and RV service.
Things to do near Cary
Water recreation drives most trips. Jordan Lake offers multiple swim beaches and boat ramps that provide access to the reservoir, and campers-only boat ramps and beach access are available at Crosswinds. Falls Lake offers similar swimming, paddling, and fishing, with a privately owned marina next to Rolling View that rents kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards.
On land, William B Umstead State Park is the local hub for hiking, trail running, mountain biking, and horseback riding, with a trail network that connects to the East Coast Greenway. Jordan Lake supports one of the largest summertime bald eagle populations in the eastern United States, and an observation point makes for easy spotting. Downtown Cary, the Koka Booth Amphitheatre, and USA Baseball's National Training Complex are all short drives from any of the campgrounds.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV camping in the Triangle. Days are mild, humidity is lower than in midsummer, and shoulder-season weekends are easier to book. Summer brings heat, humidity, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, but it is also peak season for lake swimming and boating, so weekend sites at Jordan Lake and Falls Lake fill early.
Operating seasons vary by park. The tent and trailer campground at William B Umstead State Park runs from April 1 through October 31, and reopened in 2026 following a major renovation that added a new bathhouse and upgraded sites. At Jordan Lake, Crosswinds and Poplar Point stay open year round, with reduced services in winter when water is shut off at individual campsites and remains available only at the shower houses.
At Falls Lake, active construction affects availability. Holly Point is closed starting June 1 and is scheduled to reopen by November 16, 2026, so travelers should confirm the status of Holly Point and Rolling View before booking.

How to book a campground near Cary
The four major state park campgrounds around Cary reserve through the North Carolina State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Bookings can be made online or by phone. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to six months in advance. Holiday weekend bookings generally require a two-night minimum stay when booked more than a week out.
At Jordan Lake, campers are limited to a 14-day maximum stay within any 30-day period, after which they must vacate the park before returning. Some loops at Poplar Point and Crosswinds include walk-up first-come, first-served sites. For summer weekends and holidays, book waterfront and hookup sites as early as possible; cancellations do open up closer to arrival.
What to expect at Cary-area campgrounds

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Cary, NC
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Cary, NC?
RV rental in Cary is more affordable than most travelers expect, with nightly rates typically ranging from about $95 to $175 for compact campervans and travel trailers, and roughly $200 to $375 for larger Class A and Class C motorhomes. Because RVezy is a peer-to-peer marketplace, you see real prices from local Triangle-area hosts and can filter for cheap RV rental Cary options or use Instant Book to lock in a deal fast. Pro tip: midweek pickups (Monday through Thursday) outside of Duke and NC State football weekends usually net the best rates, and booking a few weeks ahead of NC State Fair season in October helps you avoid peak demand.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cary%2C%20North%20CarolinaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Cary, North Carolina?
Good news: your regular North Carolina (or any U.S. state) driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Cary. There is no special RV endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required for the Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, or most Class A rigs you will find on RVezy. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and ID verification is handled securely through the platform during booking, so the whole process takes just a few minutes before you are cleared to hit the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Cary covered if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Cary booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit I-40 or US-1 with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host), and the plan helps cover damage to the RV during your trip. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection if a tree branch dings the roof at William B. Umstead State Park or a rock chips the windshield on the way to the Outer Banks. RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip if you need help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Cary RV rental?
Booking an RV rental in Cary is low risk because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy that applies to every reservation. The applicable terms depend on how far in advance you cancel, and the RVezy support team can walk you through your options if plans change due to a tropical storm rolling up the Carolina coast, a work conflict, or anything else. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credit so you are never left stranded. That built-in flexibility is one reason first-time renters feel comfortable booking ahead for popular weekends like the NC State Fair or Hopscotch Music Festival.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I find a pet-friendly RV rental in Cary?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Cary options are easy to find. Just use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see plenty of local hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) along for the ride. Cary is a fantastic launchpad for traveling with a pup: Bond Park has wide trails right in town, the 22-mile American Tobacco Trail starts just minutes away in Apex, and Jordan Lake State Recreation Area allows leashed pets at most campgrounds, including Poplar Point and Crosswinds. Just message the host first to confirm any pet fees or breed notes, then pack a leash, waste bags, and a portable water bowl. Your dog will love the pine-shaded campsites as much as you will.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/jordan-lake-state-recreation-areaCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Cary?
Yes, RV delivery Cary is one of the most popular options on the platform, and it's a game-changer if you're new to RVing or just don't want to drive a big rig through Raleigh-Durham traffic. Many Cary-area hosts will deliver your motorhome or travel trailer straight to Jordan Lake, Falls Lake, William B. Umstead State Park, or even your driveway, then set it up, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter by Delivery on the RVezy search page to see which listings offer it and the delivery radius. Pro tip: delivery to a state park campsite means you can fly into RDU, Uber over, and step right into vacation mode.
ncparks.gov/How far can I drive on a Cary RV trip, and what about mileage limits?
You can roam as far as you want on your Cary RV trip, and many hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage packages, especially for longer bookings. From Cary, you're perfectly positioned: the Outer Banks (Nags Head) sits about 200 miles east, Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway are roughly 240 miles west, Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach are 130 miles southeast, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park is around 290 miles. Each listing on RVezy spells out the included miles per night and the per-mile rate if you go over, so you can budget accurately. Umstead State Park, about 10 miles north, has tent and small-RV sites in 5,500 acres of forest. Falls Lake State Recreation Area (Rolling View and Holly Point) gives you lakeside camping with full amenities. For full hookups closer to town, check out Triangle RV Park and 70 East RV and Mobile Home Park. Reserve state park sites through the NC State Parks reservation system, especially for summer weekends, and you're set for great RV camping Cary adventures.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/jordan-lake-state-recreation-areaWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Cary?
The sweet spot for an RV road trip from Cary is mid-March through late May and again from mid-September through early November, when daytime temps sit in the comfortable 60s-70s F and the humidity drops. Spring brings dogwood and azalea blooms across the Triangle, while fall lights up the Blue Ridge in just a half-day's drive. Summers (June-August) are warm and humid in the 80s-90s F with afternoon thunderstorms, so prioritize lakeside or shaded sites and make sure your rental has working air conditioning. Winters are mild (40s-50s F daytime), and many local campgrounds stay open year-round, making Cary one of the few East Coast spots where RVing works in every season.
weather.gov/rah/I've never driven an RV before. Is it hard to handle around Cary?
First time renting an RV? You'll be more comfortable than you expect, especially starting from Cary. Every host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving tips, hookups, dumping, the generator, and how to level the rig, so you're never left guessing. Cary's wide suburban roads and easy access to I-40, I-440, and US-1 make practice drives stress-free, and you can be at a calm state park campground in under 30 minutes. If the idea of navigating downtown Raleigh or RDU airport still feels intimidating, just book a host who offers delivery and let them handle the driving. Pro tip: start with a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer for your first trip, then size up next time.
ncdot.gov/initiatives-policies/safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if I break down or have an issue on the road?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on I-40 heading to the Outer Banks or the fridge stops cooling at Jordan Lake, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also a real person you can message directly through the app for quick troubleshooting on quirky items like the awning or water pump. The RVezy support team is available before, during, and after your trip if anything escalates. Pro tip: snap photos of every system during the host's walkthrough so you have a reference if something acts up at the campsite at 9 p.m.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Cary RV rental into other states or across the border?
Yes, your RV rental in Cary is built for cross-state road trips, and most hosts allow travel throughout the continental U.S. Popular RV road trips from Cary include heading north to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia (about 280 miles), south to Charleston, SC (about 260 miles), or west into the Great Smoky Mountains and Tennessee. Travel into Canada may be allowed with advance host approval, so message the host before booking to confirm and review insurance details. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance coverage limits. Confirm your route with your host at booking and you are free to plan the trip of a lifetime.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Cary RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's easy to plan for. Class B campervans average 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8-12 MPG, and larger Class A rigs land around 6-10 MPG. North Carolina gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, with regular unleaded around $3.00-$3.30/gallon in the Cary and Raleigh area in recent months. For a weekend trip to Jordan Lake (under 50 miles round-trip), expect to spend $20-$40 on gas; a week-long swing to Asheville and back could run $200-$350 depending on the rig. Pro tip: fill up at Costco or Sam's Club on Walnut Street in Cary before you leave town for the best prices.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Cary?
For state parks like Jordan Lake, Falls Lake, and William B. Umstead, book through the NC State Parks reservation system (ReserveNCParks) as early as you can, especially for weekends from April through October when sites fill 2-3 months out. Holiday weekends like Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day often sell out 6 months in advance, which is the maximum booking window. Private parks such as Triangle RV Park and 70 East RV usually have more last-minute availability and you can call them directly. Pro tip: midweek stays at state parks are often wide open even in peak summer, so plan a Tuesday-Thursday trip and you'll have your pick of the best lakefront sites.
ncparks.gov/reservationsWhat are the driving conditions like in and around Cary?
Cary is one of the easier metro areas in the Southeast to navigate by RV. Roads are wide, well-maintained, and the grid layout makes things predictable. I-40, I-440, and the I-540 outer loop give you fast access in every direction, and US-64 and US-1 are great for scenic drives. Heads-up on a few things: rush hour (7-9 a.m. and 4-6:30 p.m.) along I-40 between Cary and downtown Raleigh can be slow, so plan pickups outside those windows. Watch for low clearances on a handful of older railroad underpasses near downtown Raleigh and Durham (some as low as 11 feet). Summer thunderstorms can be intense but pass quickly. Otherwise, you've got smooth sailing.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/traffic-travel/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Cary?
Campgrounds near Cary offer a great mix of amenities. North Carolina state parks like Jordan Lake and Falls Lake typically provide 30/50-amp electric and water hookups at most sites, central dump stations, hot showers, flush toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings, but not always sewer at the site. Private parks like Triangle RV Park and Crosswinds Campground often have full hookups (water, electric, sewer) plus Wi-Fi and laundry. Potable water fill stations are available at every state park entrance, and dump stations are free for registered campers. Pro tip: Jordan Lake's Crosswinds Campground has some pull-through sites long enough to handle 39-foot Class A rigs, so don't be shy about booking the big one.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/falls-lake-state-recreation-areaWhat's included in a typical RV rental in Cary?
Most motorhome rental Cary listings come fully equipped and ready for the road. Expect comfortable sleeping for 2-8 people, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and basic cookware, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control (roof AC plus furnace), seatbelted seating for travel, and 12V/110V power. Many hosts include a generator, outdoor awning, leveling blocks, and a starter kit of sewer hose, water hose, and surge protector. TVs, Bluetooth speakers, and even Starlink Wi-Fi are common in newer listings. Each RVezy listing has a detailed amenities checklist so you'll know exactly what's onboard before booking. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps Count to match your group size, then message the host about adding linens or camp chairs if needed.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.5What add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Cary offer a wide range of add-ons to customize your trip: linens and towel packages ($25-$75), kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, kayak/paddleboard rentals, portable grills, and even pre-stocked propane tanks. Generator usage often runs $3-$5 per hour beyond included time, and pet cleaning fees typically range $50-$100. Most hosts offer flexible pickup at their home address in Cary, Apex, Morrisville, or Holly Springs, and many will deliver to RDU airport or your chosen campground for a per-mile fee. Mileage allowances usually start at 100 free miles per night, with overage at $0.30-$0.45/mile. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a propane fill so you arrive at the campsite ready to relax.
rdu.com/at-rdu/ground-transportation/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your RV rental in Cary is handled securely through the RVezy platform, with no cash or off-platform transfers needed. You pay the rental total at booking with a credit card, and the security deposit is pre-authorized (not charged) on your card shortly before pickup, then released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. Deposit amounts vary by listing and rig value. Keeping everything in the app protects you, the host, and your protection plan coverage. Pro tip: do a thorough walk-around video at pickup and dropoff so any pre-existing scratches or dings are clearly documented and the deposit is released quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV overnight in Cary if I'm not at a campground?
Cary has specific rules worth knowing so you stay hassle-free. Per the Town of Cary Land Development Ordinance, an RV can be parked at a private residence (driveway, side, or rear yard, behind the front building line) and used as a temporary residence for up to two weeks, perfect if you're visiting family. On-street and front-yard parking aren't allowed, and trailers must be attached to a tow vehicle while on the street. For overnight stops outside a residence, head to one of the nearby campgrounds (Triangle RV Park, 70 East RV, Jordan Lake) or use a Harvest Hosts or Cracker Barrel location along your route. Pro tip: many Walmarts in the broader Raleigh area allow one-night RV stays, but always call the specific store manager first.
