Campgrounds and RV parks near East Rockingham, NC

Water and trails drive most trip planning here. Cheraw State Park Campground is nestled along the shores of Lake Juniper, a 360-acre lake in the South Carolina Sandhills region, and a half-mile boardwalk trail provides access to the lake from the campground. Beyond camping, the park offers kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, fishing, and extensive hiking and biking trails. Equestrian travellers have an unusual asset in the region. H Cooper Black is one of the most equestrian-friendly parks in South Carolina, with more than 20 miles of trails and sand roads and equestrian facilities including stables, kennels, corrals and arenas, plus 27 camping sites with water and electrical hookups. For family days off the campground, Pinehurst and Southern Pines are close for golf and shopping, and the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro is within about an hour.

Spring and fall are the sweet spot for RV travel in the Sandhills. The best time of year to visit Rockingham is mid March to May and mid September to October. Daytime highs sit in the comfortable 20s Celsius, humidity is manageable, and dogwoods and longleaf pine understory look their best. These shoulder seasons line up with event calendars at the equestrian and field-trial parks, so reserve early if a rally is on the schedule. Summer runs hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common and mosquitoes active near the ponds and lakes. July is the warmest month, with an average high near 91°F, and the air can feel uncomfortably humid during the summer months from June to August. Shaded, full-hookup sites with 50-amp service are worth prioritising for air conditioning. Winter is mild by North American standards but wet, with occasional freezes. Sycamore Lodge Resort is open year-round and boasts more than 175 shaded camp sites, which makes it a practical off-season base. Hunters share some public land in fall and winter, so blaze orange is a smart addition on WMA property outside the campground during hunting season.

Expect sandy, well-drained sites shaded by longleaf pine, and generally level pads suitable for larger rigs. H Cooper Black has 27 camping sites with water and electrical hookups, and camping is also available in a number of primitive campsites, plus a bathhouse and RV sanitation site. A dump station is available for RVs at Cheraw State Park, where standard sites include individual water and electric hookups. Private resorts offer more amenities. Sycamore Lodge sits on 194 acres of North Carolina woodland with cabins and RV sites with full hookups, a stocked pond, nature trails, themed events, a swimming pool, hot tub, and a dog park. Cell coverage is decent along US-1 and US-74 but can be patchy inside the state parks. Pets are not allowed in or around cabins, cabin areas or other lodging facilities, no pets are allowed in the walk-in tent area, and pets are not allowed on the golf course at Cheraw State Park.
