Camping near Hatteras, North Carolina
Hatteras sits at the southern tip of Hatteras Island on North Carolina's Outer Banks, a narrow barrier island reached via NC Highway 12 from the north or by the free state ferry from Ocracoke to the south. The village lies within Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which shapes most of the camping options in the area.
RV renters can choose between private, full-hookup parks close to the village and two National Park Service campgrounds on the seashore. Hatteras Sands RV Resort operates in Hatteras Village with paved pads and full utilities, while Frisco Woods Campgrounds Inc sits along the Pamlico Sound with a mix of full-service 30 to 50 amp RV sites, tent and pop-up sites, and cabins. Island Hide-A-Way Campground provides an additional private option nearby.
For a more rustic beach stay, Frisco Campground is located near Frisco, and Cape Point Campground is located near Buxton, both run by the National Park Service inside Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Neither offers RV hookups, but both place campers within walking distance of the beach.
Things to do around Hatteras
The beach is the main draw. Cape Point is centrally located to attractions on Cape Hatteras National Seashore and puts campers within walking distance of arguably the best fishing and surfing on the east coast, and the surrounding shoreline is popular for swimming, shelling, and four-wheel-drive beach access with a valid ORV permit.
On the sound side, shallow warm water is well suited to kayaking, kiteboarding, and windsurfing, particularly off Frisco and Buxton. Charter fishing boats leave from Hatteras Harbor for offshore Gulf Stream trips, and the free NCDOT ferry to Ocracoke Island runs from Hatteras Village year-round.
Land-based options include visiting the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, exploring the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras Village, and biking or birding along the seashore's maritime forest and salt marsh trails.

Peak RV season runs from late spring through early fall, when ocean temperatures are warmest and all campgrounds are open. The National Park Service operates Frisco Campground and Cape Point Campground seasonally, with both typically open from early April through late November. Private parks such as Hatteras Sands RV Resort and Frisco Woods Campgrounds Inc typically operate a longer shoulder season into late fall or early winter.
Late spring and early summer bring the driest, most reliable weather, while July and August are hot, humid, and busy, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with peak activity typically in late summer and early fall, so travelers in August, September, and October should watch tropical forecasts closely.
Winter is quiet and mild by East Coast standards, but the NPS campgrounds are closed for the season, and NC Highway 12 can flood during nor'easters.
How to book campgrounds near Hatteras
The two National Park Service campgrounds, Frisco Campground and Cape Point Campground, require reservations through Recreation.gov. Frisco Campground sites can be reserved up to six months in advance at Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777. Cape Point Campground has a shortened window: sites can be reserved only up to four days in advance because low-lying campsites can flood after rain, though walk-ups are welcome with payment made online. Camping is limited to a total of 14 days between Easter Day and Thanksgiving Day.
Private campgrounds including Hatteras Sands RV Resort, Frisco Woods Campgrounds Inc, and Island Hide-A-Way Campground are booked directly through each property's website or phone line. Waterfront sound-side sites and paved full-hookup sites are the first to go, so RV renters planning summer trips should reserve several months out.
What to expect on the ground
Hookups vary sharply by campground. Private parks near the village offer full hookups: Hatteras Sands RV Resort has paved pads with water, sewer, and 50-amp service, and Frisco Woods Campgrounds Inc offers full-service 30 to 50 amp RV sites along with a pool, laundry, and camp store. Both accommodate larger rigs.
The National Park Service campgrounds are more basic. There are no hook-ups for RVs, and restrooms and outdoor shower facilities are dispersed evenly throughout the campground. Campers have access to modern restrooms with flushing toilets, potable water, and unheated outdoor showers, and each campsite has a paved parking pad, picnic table, and charcoal grill. Maximum RV/trailer length is 40 feet at both Frisco and Cape Point.
Expect wind, sand, and biting insects in warmer months, and prepare for sun exposure at Cape Point, where sites sit on open, low dunes with limited shade.
