Campgrounds and RV parks near Hillsborough, NC

Downtown Hillsborough is walkable and centered on the Riverwalk, a paved path that follows the Eno River past historic sites, restaurants, and shops. Eno River State Park, just south of town, offers hiking, paddling, and swimming holes that work well for families with school-age kids. Jordan Lake is the primary water-recreation draw within a short drive. The 14,000-acre reservoir is known for its bald eagle population and supports boating, paddling, fishing, and swimming. A boat ramp is available for campers providing easy access to the waters of Jordan Lake, and Parkers Creek has a 1 1/2 mile hiking trail and a 1/2 mile children's nature trail. Durham's Museum of Life and Science and college-town attractions in Chapel Hill round out rainy-day options.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in the Piedmont. April through early June brings warm days, cool nights, and lower humidity, making it good for hiking along the Eno and paddling at Jordan Lake. Late September through October delivers similar conditions with fall color in the hardwood forests. Hillsborough has a humid subtropical climate with hot and humid summers and mild winters, and summer brings frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Most private RV parks in the area stay open year-round, while some state park facilities reduce operations in the off-season. Private parks near Hillsborough tend to be smaller, level, and geared toward travelers passing through the Triangle. Expect standard hookup pedestals, gravel or grass pads, and easy access from the interstates. At Parkers Creek, sites are wooded and set in loops around the lake. Each site includes a picnic table, grill, and lantern holder, and showers, restrooms, trash containers, and a dump station are conveniently located. There are no sewer hookups on any campsites, but a dump station sits near the entrance. Alcoholic beverages, firearms, and fireworks are prohibited, and all camping equipment must be inside timbered sites with fires in provided metal grills. Sites are limited to one RV and one tent, one pop-up and one tent, or two tents, with a six-person cap.
