Campgrounds and RV parks near Kitty Hawk, NC

The Wright Brothers National Memorial marks the site of the first powered flight and sits within a few miles of most Kitty Hawk campgrounds. Jockey's Ridge State Park, in nearby Nags Head, contains the tallest active sand dune system on the East Coast and offers hang gliding lessons, sandboarding, and sunset walks. Beach activities dominate the coast: surfing, swimming, shell hunting, and surf fishing are standard, and a Cape Hatteras Off-Road Vehicle Permit allows driving on designated beach stretches. On the sound side, kayaking, paddleboarding, crabbing, and clamming are popular, and the Bodie Island Lighthouse offers seasonal self-guided climbs with same-day tickets sold through Recreation.gov.

Summer is the busiest season on the Outer Banks. Weekly beach-house turnovers create heavy Saturday traffic on US-158 and NC-12, and campgrounds fill well in advance. Temperatures are warm and humid, ocean water is at its warmest, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Peak bookings run from mid-June through mid-August. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable periods for RV travel. April, May, September, and October bring milder temperatures, lighter crowds, and generally good beach conditions. Fall is also the region's most active hurricane and tropical-storm window, with peaks in September; travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories and be prepared for evacuation orders, which Dare County issues when storms threaten. Winter is quiet. Many private campgrounds reduce hours or close for the season, while Oregon Inlet Campground on the national seashore operates year-round. Days are cool, wind is steady off the Atlantic, and traffic drops sharply.

Sites near the beach are sandy, level, and largely unshaded. Longer tent stakes help, and RVers should plan for wind exposure and salt-laden air. Full hookups are common at private parks; at Oregon Inlet Campground, only a portion of sites have electric and water, and there are no sewer hookups on site. A free dump and water fill station is located directly across NC-12 at the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center. Charcoal grills are provided at national-seashore sites, and wood fires are not permitted there. Cell service is generally reliable across the northern Outer Banks. Grocery stores, fuel, propane, and RV supplies are available in Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head, so restocking mid-trip is straightforward.
