Campgrounds and RV parks near Manteo, NC

The downtown Manteo waterfront on Shallowbag Bay is walkable, with shops, restaurants, and the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum. Roanoke Island attractions include The Elizabethan Gardens, the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island, The Lost Colony outdoor drama, Roanoke Island Festival Park, and Island Farm, a living-history site geared to families. Across the bridge, the beaches and dunes dominate. Jockey's Ridge State Park protects the tallest natural sand dune system on the East Coast, with designated nature trails, and the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills covers the site of the first powered flight. Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, on the nearby mainland, is popular for paddling, birding, and black-bear viewing.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when Outer Banks beach traffic is heaviest and campground demand is highest. Summer is hot and busy, and Atlantic hurricane season, roughly June through November, can bring storm-driven closures and evacuations. Travelers in July and August should reserve well in advance and build flexibility into the itinerary in case a tropical system forces a route change. Spring and fall bring mild temperatures and a less-crowded coast compared with peak summer. April through early June and September through October are strong windows for RV travel: water is warm enough for swimming into early fall, fishing is productive, and site availability is easier. Winter is the quiet season. Many private parks reduce services, and some seasonal amenities close. Oregon Inlet Campground has traditionally closed after Thanksgiving weekend, though it has stayed open through winter in some years, so confirm current status before booking a cold-weather trip.

Private parks near Manteo lean toward full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi, and they suit longer stays and larger rigs. Roads on and off Roanoke Island are flat, and access to the Washington Baum Bridge and US-64 is straightforward for towables and Class A coaches. Expectations at Oregon Inlet are different. Each loop has a modern restroom with flush toilets and outdoor showers, though recent camper reports describe cold or lukewarm water, so plan accordingly. A dump station sits at the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center a short distance from the campground. The ground is sandy and often uneven, and sites can accommodate self-contained rigs up to about 40 feet, so measure your setup and review site photos before booking.
