Campgrounds and RV parks near Marshall, NC

The French Broad River drives most of the recreation. Tubing, kayaking, guided rafting, and fishing are all popular directly from riverfront campgrounds, and outfitters run trips on the whitewater section between Barnard and Hot Springs. Calmer stretches near town suit families and first-time paddlers, though currents can rise quickly after rain. Hiking is the other main draw. The Appalachian Trail crosses the French Broad at Hot Springs and climbs Lover's Leap Rock for a well-known overlook of the river. Max Patch, a grassy bald north of Hot Springs, is a short but steep walk with open summit views, and camping is not permitted on the bald itself. Pisgah National Forest trails add longer routes with moderate elevation gain. Downtown Marshall has restaurants, a brewery, and a weekend arts scene, and Asheville is roughly a 25-minute drive south.

The Marshall area has a humid subtropical mountain climate, with warm humid summers, cold wet winters, and a long shoulder season. Most private campgrounds along the French Broad stay open year-round, while the nearest Forest Service site, Rocky Bluff south of Hot Springs, operates roughly Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend when open. The Silvermine group site near Hot Springs is reservation-only for a single group at a time and runs on a limited seasonal schedule, so dates should be confirmed on Recreation.gov before planning. Late spring through early fall is peak season. Riverside sites book quickly for summer weekends, and reservations for holiday weekends often fill well in advance. Summer afternoons carry a real thunderstorm risk, and river levels can jump after heavy rain, so paddling plans need to stay flexible. Fall brings cooler nights, drier air, and leaf color that typically peaks in mid to late October in the mid elevations. Winter camping is possible at valley-floor parks but requires preparation for freezing overnight temperatures and occasional snow, especially at higher elevations. Some campgrounds and outfitters in the Hot Springs area were affected by Hurricane Helene damage and continue to reopen in phases, so status should be confirmed directly with each operator.

Roads into Marshall follow river valleys and mountain grades. Approaches from Asheville via US-25/70 include switchbacks and steep sections in places, so larger rigs should plan the route in advance and avoid narrow forest service roads unless a specific site is confirmed as RV-accessible. Hookups vary widely. Riverside private parks generally offer full or partial hookups with fire rings, picnic tables, and hot showers, while Rocky Bluff and other Forest Service sites are rustic with tent pads, potable water spigots, and porta-johns in place of the closed restroom building. Cell service is limited in the valleys and near Rocky Bluff, though texting is often possible. Black bears live throughout the area, so food and trash must be stored in bear-proof containers or a locked hard-sided vehicle. Firewood should be bought locally to limit pest spread, and current fire restrictions should be checked before lighting a campfire.
