Campgrounds near Matthews, North Carolina
Matthews sits just southeast of Charlotte in Mecklenburg County, giving RV travelers quick access to the Charlotte metro area, Interstate 485, and US-74. The town works well as a base for families visiting the region's theme parks, motorsports venues, and outdoor recreation across the Piedmont.
RV options within a short drive include Elmore RV Park and Campground, Crown Cove RV Park, Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort, Yates Family Camping, and Apollo RV Park. These range from full-hookup private parks catering to long-term guests and travelers to the theme-park adjacent Camp Wilderness Resort, which serves visitors to Carowinds on the North Carolina and South Carolina line.
Charlotte has a humid subtropical climate with no dry season, featuring hot summers, cool winters, and rainfall spread fairly evenly through the year, with heavy downpours and afternoon thunderstorms possible in warmer months. That pattern keeps most private parks near Matthews open year-round, with peak demand from late spring through early fall.
Things to do near Matthews
Carowinds is the region's headline attraction, a large theme park straddling the state line with roller coasters, a water park, and live entertainment through the warm season. Charlotte Motor Speedway in nearby Concord hosts NASCAR weekends and touring events, and the U.S. National Whitewater Center offers rafting, climbing, and miles of trails on the west side of the metro.
For outdoor days, Lake Norman State Park to the north and Crowders Mountain State Park to the west provide hiking, paddling, and swimming beaches. Closer to Matthews, greenway trails along Four Mile Creek and Squirrel Lake Park give families short, stroller-friendly options. Uptown Charlotte adds museums, the Discovery Place science center, and pro sports venues within a 20-minute drive.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in the Charlotte area. March through May brings warming days, blooming dogwoods, and manageable humidity, though thunderstorms pick up through late spring. September through early November delivers similar highs with lower rainfall and reliable foliage color across the Piedmont in late October and early November.
Summers are hot and muggy. Charlotte regularly has highs of 90 degrees or more during summer months, and the 90-degree heat can arrive as early as April or as late as October. Plan for shade, hookups with 50-amp service for air conditioning, and afternoon storm windows.
Winters are cool but rarely severe. Even after the most frigid nights, the days in Charlotte almost always warm up to above freezing, and on average just one or two days each winter don't reach above 32°F. Charlotte also averages 3.5 inches of snowfall a year, so winter RV travel is generally feasible with basic freeze precautions.

Booking campgrounds near Matthews
Private parks in the Matthews and Charlotte area typically take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Book Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort through the Carowinds site, especially for park operating weekends and holiday events, when sites fill fastest. Elmore RV Park and Campground, Crown Cove RV Park, Yates Family Camping, and Apollo RV Park handle bookings independently and often offer monthly rates alongside nightly stays.
For nearby North Carolina State Parks such as Lake Norman and Crowders Mountain, reservations go through the state's official ReserveAmerica portal and can be made up to 6 months in advance, with a 1-day minimum lead time before arrival. For race weekends at Charlotte Motor Speedway and major Carowinds events, book several months out.
What to expect
Most parks near Matthews cater to travelers passing through on I-77 and I-85 as well as families visiting Carowinds and the Charlotte metro. Expect a mix of pull-through and back-in sites, full hookups at private parks, and shaded lots typical of the Piedmont's mixed hardwood and pine cover. Cell coverage across major carriers is generally strong throughout the area.
Traffic in and around Charlotte peaks during weekday commuting hours and around race weekends, so plan arrivals accordingly. Grocery, fuel, and RV service options are plentiful near Matthews along US-74 and Independence Boulevard. Thunderstorms in summer can be intense but brief; secure awnings and outdoor gear when storms are in the forecast.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Matthews, NC?
Great news for budget-conscious travelers: an RV rental in Matthews, NC is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Charlotte region. On RVezy, expect to pay roughly $80 to $150 per night for travel trailers, $125 to $225 for Class C motorhomes, and $200 to $350 for larger Class A coaches. Add-ons like generators, camping chairs, or kitchen kits run an extra $5 to $25 each. To find a cheap RV rental Matthews families love, use the price-range filter, book midweek instead of NASCAR race weekends at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and travel in shoulder months like March or October. Pro tip: many hosts knock 10 to 20 percent off weekly stays, so simply ask before booking.
visitnc.com/trip-ideas/rv-campingDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Matthews, NC?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Matthews. North Carolina does not require a Commercial Driver License (CDL) for recreational vehicles, and virtually every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy falls well under the 26,000-pound threshold where a non-commercial Class B would apply. You just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. That's it, no test, no endorsement, no DMV stop required before your Charlotte-area road trip.
ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/commercial/Pages/default.aspxIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included when I book in Matthews?
Yes, and this is one of the best parts of booking an RV rental in Matthews through RVezy. Every booking includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered for most damage to the RV and supported if a tire blows on I-485 or the battery dies at a Lake Norman campground. During checkout you choose from several protection plan tiers based on the coverage level and deductible you prefer, so the level of peace of mind is your call, not the host's. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection and removes the biggest worry for first-time renters.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my RV rental in Matthews?
Life happens, and RVezy makes it low-risk to lock in your dates. Cancellation policies are set by RVezy (not individual hosts), so the rules are consistent across every listing in Matthews and across North Carolina. There is a grace period shortly after booking where you can cancel for a full refund, and the specific refund amount after that depends on how far in advance you cancel, which you will see clearly during checkout. If a host has to cancel, RVezy refunds the guest or offers travel credit. Pro tip: if a tropical system threatens your trip, message RVezy support right away, the team is available 24/7 to help you reschedule or refund.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Matthews RV rental?
Absolutely, and the Charlotte area is a great place for a pet-friendly RV rental in Matthews. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see only listings that welcome dogs, then message the host about size or breed details. Once you are rolling, Matthews itself is dog-heaven: Squirrel Lake Park has shaded trails right in town, the Four Mile Creek Greenway is leash-friendly, and Reedy Creek Park in nearby Charlotte features a fenced off-leash dog park. Most campgrounds in the region, including Charlotte/Fort Mill KOA and Cane Creek Park in Union County, welcome leashed pets. Pack a collapsible water bowl, a Carolina summer can get hot fast.
matthewsnc.gov/200/Parks-RecreationCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or home in Matthews?
Yes, RV delivery Matthews is one of the easiest ways to enjoy a stress-free first trip. To find these listings, toggle the Delivery filter and enter your destination ZIP. Delivery fees usually run $2 to $4 per mile round-trip, with many hosts offering flat-rate delivery inside a 25-mile radius of Matthews. It's the closest thing to glamping with zero learning curve.

mecknc.gov/ParkandRec/Parks/Pages/McDowellNature.aspxWhen is the best time of year for a Matthews RV trip?
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for a Matthews RV trip. April and May bring blooming dogwoods, daytime highs in the mid-70s, and the lowest humidity of the year, while September through early November delivers crisp 60s-to-70s weather and stunning fall color in the nearby Uwharrie and Blue Ridge mountains. Summers (June-August) are warm and muggy with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s and afternoon thunderstorms, still great for lake trips if your RV has strong AC. Winters are mild (highs in the upper 40s to low 50s), with only about four inches of snow per year, making year-round RV camping near Matthews completely doable.
weather.gov/gsp/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, first time renting an RV in Matthews is genuinely one of the easiest places to start. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water system, propane, and dump procedure before you leave the driveway. You can message your host anytime during the trip with questions, and RVezy's 24/7 support team is one tap away. For your first outing, consider a travel trailer or Class C motorhome (easier to drive than a Class A) and pick a close-by campground like Cane Creek Park, only 20 minutes from Matthews, so you can settle in without a long highway shakedown. Confidence builds fast.
visitnc.com/What happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on I-77, a dead battery at Lake Norman, or a tow needed off the Blue Ridge Parkway is one phone call away. The dispatcher can send help directly to your location, whether you are parked at McDowell Nature Preserve or rolling through downtown Charlotte. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy app for quick questions about quirks specific to their rig. Pro tip: before you leave Matthews, snap a photo of the VIN sticker and save the roadside number to your phone's favorites, two seconds now, huge time-saver later.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take a Matthews rental RV across state lines or into Canada?
Yes to most US travel, and that is a big part of the fun. Your RVezy protection plan covers travel throughout the continental United States, so popular routes from Matthews like South Carolina's coast (Myrtle Beach, Charleston), Tennessee (the Smokies, Nashville), Georgia (Savannah, Atlanta), and Virginia (Shenandoah National Park) are all fair game. Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed with advance approval, just message the host before booking so they can confirm. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance and protection do not extend there. Stick to the US and Canada and you will have endless road-trip options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's the fuel budget for an RV trip out of Matthews?
Realistic fuel planning makes any RV road trip from Matthews a breeze. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 for Class C, 14 to 18 for campervans (Class B), and tow vehicle MPG (typically 10 to 14) when pulling a travel trailer or fifth wheel. North Carolina gas prices usually sit a bit below the national average, and diesel runs slightly higher. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop to Asheville and back, budget about $120 to $180 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fuel up off I-485 at the Costco or Sam's Club in Pineville before heading west, prices there are consistently among the lowest in the Charlotte metro.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Matthews?
For the most popular spots, book two to four months ahead. North Carolina State Parks like Crowders Mountain and Morrow Mountain accept reservations through the official NC State Parks reservation system, and lakefront sites at Cane Creek Park release months in advance and disappear quickly for spring and fall weekends. Charlotte Motor Speedway sites sell out fastest during NASCAR race weeks (Coca-Cola 600 in May, Bank of America Roval in October), so lock those down even earlier. For midweek or shoulder-season trips, two to three weeks ahead is usually fine. Insider tip: if your top choice is full, check back on Sunday evenings, cancellations are common.
northcarolinastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Matthews and Charlotte?
Driving an RV around Matthews is very manageable, the terrain is gentle Piedmont rolling hills with no mountain passes nearby. The main thing to plan around is Charlotte rush hour: avoid I-485, I-77, and I-85 between 7-9 a.m. and 4-7 p.m., especially the I-485/I-77 interchange. Stick to mid-morning or early-afternoon departures from Matthews and you'll glide. Heading west toward Asheville, US-74 and I-40 are RV-friendly with steady grades. Watch for low railroad bridges in older Charlotte neighborhoods like NoDa and Plaza Midwood (some are under 11 feet) and use an RV-specific GPS or the Google Maps truck-route option. Summer afternoon thunderstorms are common, pull over for the heavy stuff and you'll be back on the road in 20 minutes.
drivenc.gov/What hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Matthews?
Campgrounds in the Matthews area cover the full spectrum, so you can match the experience to your comfort level. Private parks like Charlotte/Fort Mill KOA and Camping World Racing Resort offer full hookups (30/50-amp electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. County and state parks like Cane Creek Park and McDowell Nature Preserve typically provide water and electric (no sewer at the site) with a centrally located dump station and bathhouse. Where to park an RV in Matthews overnight outside a campground is limited, the town itself doesn't allow on-street RV parking, so always have a reservation. Pro tip: ask your host if the rig has a built-in fresh-water tank and an extra sewer hose, that flexibility opens up the more rustic state-park sites.
ncparks.gov/recreation/campingWhat equipment and amenities come with a typical Matthews RV rental?
More than you might expect. A typical campervan rental Matthews or motorhome on RVezy comes ready to roll with sleeping for 2-8 (queen beds, bunks, convertible dinettes), a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelted seats for travel. Most also include a TV, stereo, awning, and outdoor camp chairs. Many hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots, generators (great for Charlotte Motor Speedway boondocking), and starter kits with linens and kitchenware as included or low-cost add-ons. Check the listing's amenities list, and if something specific matters, like a CPAP-friendly inverter or a kid's car seat anchor, just message the host before booking.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Matthews offer a smart menu of add-ons that make life easier. Popular ones include kitchen kits ($25-50), linens and towels ($15-30 per person), portable generators ($25-50/day), bike racks, kayak racks, outdoor grills, and propane fire pits (Carolinas burn bans permitting). Pickup is typically at the host's address in Matthews, Mint Hill, or Indian Trail, but Instant Book listings and Delivery listings streamline things even more. Mileage policies usually include 100-150 free miles per night, with extras at $0.30-$0.50. Pro tip: bundle delivery + setup + linens into one booking and you'll arrive at your campsite with nothing to do except open a chair and crack a drink.
visitnc.com/listings/category/camping-rvHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment on RVezy is simple and fully online, no cash, no awkward handoffs. You pay through the secure RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book. A security deposit (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV's value) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup, not charged, and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any issues, do the walkthrough with your host at pickup, snap photos of any existing scuffs, and return the rig clean with the same fuel and propane levels. Easy in, easy out, deposit back, ready for your next North Carolina RV rental.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Matthews for a winter trip?
Yes, winter is an underrated season to rent an RV in Matthews. The Piedmont climate is famously mild, with December and January highs in the upper 40s to low 50s and only about four snowfall days per year. Most RVezy motorhomes in the Charlotte area include a propane furnace and many have heated holding tanks for cold snaps, just ask the host to confirm before you book. Winter is perfect for quieter visits to Crowders Mountain State Park, NASCAR's off-season speedway tours, or a cozy weekend at Lake Norman with nobody on the water. Pro tip: bring an extension cord for shore power at the campground, and let the host show you the antifreeze and water-line setup at pickup so you avoid any frozen-pipe surprises.
