Campgrounds and RV parks near Nags Head, NC

The beach is the main draw. The beach adjacent to Oregon Inlet Campground can be reached by foot from campsites and by vehicle with a Cape Hatteras Off-Road Vehicle Permit, and popular activities include fishing, swimming, surfing, birding, and shell hunting. Calmer sound-side waters can be accessed at the public boat launch at Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, with crabbing, clamming, paddle-boarding, boating, and fishing all popular. Inland attractions include Jockey's Ridge State Park in Nags Head, home to the tallest living sand dune system on the Atlantic coast, with hang gliding lessons from a private concessionaire and a soundside access area for swimming, paddling, kiteboarding, and windsurfing on Roanoke Sound. The Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills and Bodie Island Lighthouse are both within a short drive. The lighthouse sits about four miles north of Oregon Inlet Campground on NC Highway 12 and is open seasonally for self-guided climbs, with tickets sold on a first come, first served basis through recreation.gov.

Peak season on the Outer Banks runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with sites filling months in advance and traffic heaviest on weekends. Late spring and early fall are quieter but still warm enough for beach use. Oregon Inlet Campground has historically operated from spring through late fall, with opening dates typically in April and a closing date around Thanksgiving, though the National Park Service has extended operations into winter in some recent years. Confirm current dates on Recreation.gov before travel. Hurricane season is a real planning factor. The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the statistical peak around September 10 and most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Storm surge, sustained winds, and mandatory evacuations from Dare County can close bridges and campgrounds with little notice. Winter is mild but windy, with far fewer visitors. From Easter Sunday until the Sunday after Thanksgiving, camping is limited to 14 days at each seashore campground, and from the Monday after Thanksgiving to the Saturday before Easter, camping is limited to 30 days total. RV travelers using private parks should confirm winter hours directly with each property.

Sites at Cape Hatteras National Seashore are basic and exposed. Each of the three loops at Oregon Inlet has a bath house with flush toilets, potable water, and outdoor unheated or cold showers. Each campsite has a paved parking pad, picnic table, and charcoal grill, and a limited number of sites offer RV hookups. A dump and water fill station are located directly across Highway 12 at Oregon Inlet Fishing Center and are free of charge for campers. All campsites are exposed and subject to weather extremes, and there are no shaded sites in the campground. Bring stakes rated for sand, sun protection, and layers for cool nights year-round. Quiet hours are 10:00 pm to 6:00 am, generators must be turned off during quiet hours, and wood fires are not permitted. Only charcoal cooking fires are allowed, in a grill, stove, or another self-contained unit. Leashed pets are allowed at Oregon Inlet and at most private parks in the area.
