Campgrounds and RV parks near Ocracoke, NC

The main draw is the beach. Miles of undeveloped Atlantic shoreline run north from the village, with surf fishing, shell hunting, and 4x4 access at designated ramps. A paved bike path connects Ocracoke Campground to the village, and rentals for bikes, kayaks, and golf carts are easy to find. In the village, visitors can tour the Ocracoke Lighthouse, the British Cemetery, and the Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum, or watch the Banker Ponies at the pen along Highway 12. The Pamlico Sound side is well suited to kayaking, paddleboarding, windsurfing, and clamming. Dark-sky conditions are strong across the National Seashore, and clear nights offer easy Milky Way viewing from the campground loops.

Peak season runs May through August, when ocean temperatures are warm, ferries fill up, and village businesses operate at full capacity. Reservations are strongly recommended in these months, both for campsites and for the Cedar Island and Swan Quarter ferry routes. The Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry remains first-come, first-served and does not take reservations. Spring and fall are the shoulder seasons and tend to be the sweet spot for RV travel. Temperatures are mild, bugs are lighter, and campgrounds are easier to book. Late May through September can be buggy: mosquitoes and biting flies bloom whenever the wind drops, so repellent is essential. Winter is quiet. Many restaurants and shops close, but Ocracoke Campground typically operates year-round. Nor'easters are frequent from late fall through early spring and can produce sustained wind, overwash on Highway 12, and ferry disruptions. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest storm risk from August through October.

Ocracoke Campground has 136 sites on flat, sandy terrain behind the primary dune line, with paved back-in pads that accommodate RVs up to 40 feet. Amenities include flush toilets, drinking water, cold-water showers, a dump station, and charcoal grills. There are no hookups and very little natural shade, so canopies, long tent stakes, and sun protection are important. Wood fires are prohibited; only charcoal is allowed. Jerniman's and Teeter's offer hookups, hot showers, and easy walking access to the village. Sites at both are on the smaller side and can feel close together during peak weeks. Cell service varies by carrier and location on the island. Bugs, wind, and blowing sand are part of the experience. Bring cash, since some island businesses do not accept cards.
