Camping near Parkton, North Carolina
Parkton sits in Robeson County in the North Carolina Sandhills, between Fayetteville and Lumberton along the I-95 corridor. The location makes it a practical base for RV travelers moving between the Northeast and Florida, and for visitors heading to Fort Bragg, downtown Fayetteville, or the Lumber River. Terrain is flat, sandy, and pine-covered, with easy highway access from nearby I-95 exits.
Campground options within a short drive lean toward private RV parks with full hookups rather than public backcountry sites. Lake Waldos Beach Campground and Fayetteville RV Resort and Cottages serve the Fayetteville side, while Lumberton / I-95 KOA Journey sits near where I-95 and I-74 meet, about 20 minutes from the South Carolina border. Spacious Skies Sandy Run is located in the Carolina Sandhills in Cumberland County, minutes off I-95 at exit 44, in a grove of native longleaf pines.
For a quieter, rural option away from the interstate, Idlewild Farm Stays offers a farm-style setting.
Things to do near Parkton
Fayetteville is the primary hub for day trips. Local attractions include the Cape Fear Botanical Garden, ZipQuest Waterfall and Treetop Adventure, and various historical sites and museums. The Airborne and Special Operations Museum in downtown Fayetteville is free and popular with families. Golfers have multiple public courses within 20 to 30 minutes.
On the Lumberton side, families can visit the Exploration Station children's museum, the Robeson County History Museum, and the restored Carolina Civic Center Historic Theater. Paddlers can put in on the Lumber River, a designated National Wild and Scenic River, or on branches of the Cape Fear.
For day-use recreation from a campsite, Spacious Skies Sandy Run offers a catch-and-release fishing pond, playground, and walking trails, and Lumberton / I-95 KOA Journey has a seasonal pool, nature trail, and dog play areas on site.

The Sandhills climate is humid subtropical, so the RV season effectively runs year-round, but each shoulder brings tradeoffs. Spring, from mid-March through May, delivers the most reliable weather: warm days, cool nights, and lower humidity. Longleaf pines and dogwoods are in bloom, and private parks generally have open availability outside of holiday weekends.
Summer is hot and sticky. July is typically the warmest month, with average highs near 89°F and lows around 72°F, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. August brings the heaviest rainfall, averaging about 3.4 inches. Atlantic hurricane season peaks from August through October and can force temporary closures.
Fall cools off quickly after mid-September and is prime RV weather through November. Winter is mild by national standards, with occasional frost and rare light snow; many private parks stay open, though pools and seasonal amenities close.

We had a great time with our camper van rental. It was very clean and well maintained. The van was completely stocked with everything we needed to enjoy a weekend by the lake. The owner gave us a thorough orientation of all of the vans systems. We highly recommended renting “Roy” the Solis camper van.

How to book
Private parks in the Parkton area take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Lumberton / I-95 KOA Journey and Spacious Skies Sandy Run also list availability on their brand booking platforms, and both honor KOA Rewards or Spacious Skies membership discounts respectively. Fayetteville RV Resort and Cottages, Lake Waldos Beach Campground, and Idlewild Farm Stays are best booked direct, since inventory is small and fills quickly around Fort Bragg graduation weeks and holiday travel.
For state park camping in the region, such as Raven Rock or Jones Lake, use the ReserveAmerica portal for North Carolina State Parks. North Carolina state parks open campsite reservations up to 6 months in advance, and a single campsite can be reserved for a maximum of 14 consecutive nights within any 30-day period.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in this part of the Sandhills are typically sandy or gravel, level, and shaded by pines rather than hardwoods. Most private parks near Parkton offer 30 and 50 amp service with full hookups. Lumberton / I-95 KOA Journey offers large and level pull-thru RV sites with full 50/30 amp service and complimentary WiFi, and Spacious Skies Sandy Run provides full hookup RV sites, a swimming pool, catch-and-release fishing pond, playground, dog park, and camp store.
Cell coverage is generally solid along I-95 and thinner on rural farm properties. Fire ants, ticks, and mosquitoes are active from spring through fall; pack repellent and check pets after outdoor time. Sandy access roads at some parks can soften after heavy rain, so slow down with big rigs.
