Campgrounds and RV parks near Pinehurst, NC

Golf drives most visits, with the Pinehurst Resort courses and dozens of public tracks in the surrounding villages. Beyond the fairways, the Weymouth Woods-Sandhills Nature Preserve protects longleaf pine habitat and has walking trails suitable for families. Downtown Pinehurst and neighboring Southern Pines have compact village centers with restaurants, ice cream, and small museums. Water and trail activities are close at hand. Badin Lake, within about an hour, offers boat ramps, swimming, and fishing. The Uwharrie National Forest has roughly 40 miles of non-motorized trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, plus 17 miles of motorized OHV trails. Horseback riding is a signature of the Sandhills. The Walthour-Moss Foundation preserves miles of sandy bridle paths, and several area stables offer lessons and guided rides.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel here. From mid-March through May, daytime highs climb from the 60s into the upper 70s, dogwoods and azaleas bloom, and campground demand rises around major Pinehurst golf events. Book well ahead if a trip coincides with a tournament or a college graduation weekend. Summer is hot and humid, with July and August highs near 90°F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Shaded sites, pools, and lakes make it workable for families, but tropical systems moving up from the Gulf or Atlantic can bring heavy rain from August into October. Check National Hurricane Center forecasts before travel in late summer. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and reliable sunny days through October and into November. Winters are short and mild by regional standards, though overnight lows can dip below freezing. Most private parks stay open year-round, and the Uwharrie National Forest campgrounds at Arrowhead and Badin Lake also operate year-round, though services may thin out.

The terrain is gently rolling with sandy soil and tall longleaf pines, which means shaded sites, easy leveling in most private parks, and generally good drainage after rain. Roads into private campgrounds are paved or well-graded gravel and handle big rigs without issue. Some state park and national forest loops have tighter turns and lower branches, so check length limits before booking a larger motorhome or trailer. Cell service is reliable in and around Pinehurst on major carriers and thins out inside the Uwharrie National Forest. Groceries, propane, and RV supplies are easy to find in Southern Pines, Aberdeen, and Fayetteville. Prescribed burns are common in the Uwharrie National Forest and can bring smoke through nearby campgrounds for a day or two. Ticks and chiggers are active from spring through fall, so pack repellent and check after hikes.
